Parking Update

Because of the multiple people warning me that a public parking garage for $5/day was obviously impossible and that there must be some sort of catch, I contacted the Whitney Peak Hotel, which manages the Whitney Peak Parking Garage located one block from the Reno Amtrak station, explained that we planned on taking an Amtrak trip and wanted to make sure that we could park long-term in that garage.

Their response was, "You are correct, Whitney Peak does have public parking available for $5/day" with no further caveats.

If the hotel whose parking garage it is says we can park there for $5/day and doesn't say, "...but only if you stay in the hotel," or "...subject to special conditions that will result in your car being towed," and so forth, I'm going to assume that it's okay to park there as long as I pay when we get back. As two weeks parking there will be far less than the cost of a round-trip taxi ride from Fernley, I think we'll give this a try.

Just as an FYI, I stayed at the Whitney Peak Hotel during my travels to and from Westercon. The hotel has the advantage of being a non-smoking and having no casino. Twice I got their Steak salad from the attached restaurant to take back to my room to eat and it was very tasty; not cheap but well worth the price in my not so humble opinion. They have an extensive rock climbing training setup on the second floor for those who are interested. I also had one meal at the Pho 777 restaurant a couple of blocks away, the Chicken with lemongrass over steamed rice was very good and reasonably priced. For those needing coffee, opposite from the Whitney Peak, across the art plaza, is the Eldorado Casino which has a Starbucks just inside the entrance on the right so you do not need to walk through the casino itself, this Starbucks has plenty of seating and multiple electrical outlets for charging devices which proved handy because it appears that the Amtrak station has eliminated the electrical outlets in the passenger waiting area, there were just solid plates on the wall where there appeared to have previously been outlets. This is 2022 and one would think that one of the basics of customer service would be to have electrical outlets available.

Can you pay in advance and get a receipt?

I don't know, as I've never actually parked in it. From the outside, it looks like one of those where you get a ticket when you enter, then pay in a machine before you exit, and the validated exit ticket is good for a specified period of time to give you enough time to get out of the garage.
