Beating Back the Bushes

On Sunday, after having breakfast at the Wigwam, I had just barely enough energy to try and cut back some of the summer's growth. Eight weeks of summer gave our trees a lot of time to expand.

This is what I was facing when I got home from the UK. It may not seem like much, but our goal is to always keep things back from the fence, for fire-protection reasons.

Bushes were trying to take over the front gate.

And they were moving inside the fence as well.

The tree on the far side of the fence had put enough growth through the fence that I couldn't walk through this section of sidewalk.

The main sidewalk wasn't too bad, but there were weeds working their way up through the cracks.
I got the cutters and rake out of the garage and spent an hour or so hacking at the growth.

Things look a bit better around the front gate.

The brush pile is growing as I raked a lot of stuff away from the fence.

The sidewalk is usable again.

At least some of the defensible area has been mostly cleared now.

There is still work to be done, but I can now walk from one end of the property without trees slapping me.
I would like to have worked more on this, but even with my right leg not hurting as much as it was, I think it's important to not rush things. This was the most urgent trimming, but not the end of the job.
