Lost and Found

I called Jiffy Lube this morning, and lo and behold, they have my book! I would have checked yesterday, but they were closed on Easter Sunday. I must have taken it out of my bag, set it down, and forgotten about it. Lisa and I expect to go into Reno tomorrow afternoon after work, so I will stop by and collect it from them.

Yay. I hope you've been finding the book informative: the CPR is really central to 19C Canadian history.

It's a fascinating book. I knew some of the history, but not all of it. For example, I was first made aware of the Riel rebellion because I stayed in the Place Louis Riel (now converted to apartments) during the 1994 Winnipeg Worldcon. There s a section of the book about the Riel rebellion and how it pushed the Canadian government toward building an all-Canadian railroad because, among other things, it seems unlikely that the US government would allow Canadian troops to transit the USA on American railroads in order to get from Ontario to Manitoba.

Yes, the dispute over whether they were going to build the line over the Shield north of Superior seems to me to embody the question for then-fledgling Canada of 'so is this really one country or not?'
