I almost also got caughtmissing a flight by public transportation on my way to LAcon IV. I had a scheduled non-stop on Friday becuase it was cheaper than flying Sunday or Saturday and I needed to be on site on Monday (and thought I could be useful someplace). Glenn Glazer said I could stay with him over the weekend, so I didn't end up losing money with extra hotel costs.
Early Friday morning I got a call from AA that my flight was cancelled. After a long time figuring out alternates into LAX, I remembered that Glenn said SNA was easier for him. So we went through the whole process again finding an alternate to SNA. It wasn't non-stop, and I needed to leave earlier, but it was still better than the LAX options.
However, I should have asked about rebooking on Saturday. They would have done that without charge. Part of the reason was losing the half-day at work, but the other was how crowded the Green Line was mid-FRiday morning. I'd forgotten that there was a Red Sox-Yankee double header! I barely got on a train!
