Thinking more about the August-September drives to/from Oregon, I decided to economize a little bit. (The huge amount of money I'll be spending over that month on hotel and other travel expenses in Japan weighs heavily on my mind.) So I booked a considerably less-expensive room in Yreka, just up the road from Weed, instead. The Rodeway Inn is only barely above Motel 6, but it's only for one night each way. At least it's not a Day's Inn; I'll never willing stay in one of those again.

Thanks. Good tips. We stayed at a Days Inn in Chicago recently and, although it wasn't The Waldorf Astoria, it was certainly serviceable.

We have 4 stops (2 out, 2 back) along our travel route where I've reserved Days Inns. As a backup I also reserved Holiday Inn family hotels on the way back, in case we discover the Days Inns to be truly atrocious. I just have to remember to cancel whichever reservations we don't use.

While *at* our destinations we're staying at more upscale places, so, it's taking a chance up to 4 times at 4 different places. Unless there are bugs crawling around, we can deal with most anything, and the prices are all below $100 per night. (It's hard to find a decent room for under $100 anymore...presuming these are decent.)

Please, if you have anything else to share that would help us decide, feel free to speak up!
