Thanks to Mark Evanier, I had a look at the California Unclaimed Property web site, which is where the State Controller's Office holds money for California residents that they can't find. Checking my name, I find more Standlees than I though there were in California. Also, unless someone with a name almost identical to my father's held the same PO Box in my home town as we did when we lived there in the late 1970s, there is about $10 on hold for Dad.

I sent an e-mail to my father telling him about this, and suggesting he try to claim the money if it is indeed his. (It looks like it's part of some class-action lawsuit settlement.) The challenge to me was trying to come up with a subject line and message text that didn't set off the spam trap at his ISP. Most of the subjects like "There's money waiting for you" or something like that are almost certainly going to be treated as spam -- I sure would be skeptical of any e-mail I received with that subject!

"Hi, Dad" is a good subject. Actually, it's not likely to fall afoul of a spam filter if you write it yourself in grammatical English.

Amusingly? This prompted me to check Washington State's version of the same thing. Guess what? Seattle City Light owes me like $25. YAY!

I've learned so much from Mark's blog (and I've even been quoted in there once or twice). It's part of my daily readings, along with my LJ f-list.

That's amazing. Someone owes me $17, at an address I also was using in the late 70s.

There were four things there for me. Amazing. :-)

Thanks.
