Elephant ears are a kind of fried dough pastry found at seaside amusement centers, county fairs, and theme parks. They are not at all good for you, but they taste wonderful.
Zinger's Ice Cream has a sign on their patio (they're half a block from We're All Ears, which serves these fried dietary disasters) that says "No smoking/No elephant ears." When we were buying our ice cream cones, the counter person said the reason for the latter restriction is that when people drop bits of elephant-ear on the patio (which is nearly inevitable, given how they're made), the stains can't be washed out even with a pressure washer and have to be burned off with acid.
