As I rather expected, the agents at Amtrak have no idea whether the strike of Via Rail Canada's locomotive engineers, if it happens, will affect service on the Adirondack. The same union represents the engineers to both companies, but the Amtrak agent said it's an Amtrak crew that operates the train clear through to Montreal. Whether the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers would oblige their Amtrak-contract members to honor the strike on Canadian lines is still apparently up in the air.

So perhaps I should consider the bus both ways?

I don't know. Amtrak doesn't seem to know who runs their trains in Canada, at least as of earlier today. Maybe they know by now; I haven't checked.

It does seem likely. I'll post them if I take them.

OTOH, I'm in such deep water now that I've not been able to post any of the Westercon material, which is annoying because it means there is a good chance I'll never post it now.

Thanks. I mean going through and putting captions on all of the photos. Actually uploading them to Flickr without comment wouldn't take that long, and I might just do that and let it go.

When I went to Westercon 40 in Vancouver BC, Greyhound Canada was on strike. Greyhound USA dropped me off at a bus stop because the station was closed for the strike.

here's the latest....

Hi,
As a canadian looking to travel by rail these days, things don't look too good!! I was just on the AMTRAK site, and this message popped up....thought I might post it here FYI since it relates to your msgs
Here's the link:

http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/am2Copy/Simple_Copy_Popup&c=am2Copy&cid=1189639698574

BASICALLY...until the strike (which there still may not be....) is over, no trains will operate in Canada.

Actually, that's not true. Read the rest of the announcement. The only Amtrak trains affected are the Maple Leaf between New York and Toronto (Trains 63/64). The Adirondack between New York and Montreal (68/69), which is the train that most American fans coming up from the south (including me) will be on, is not affected.

(The Cascades 510/517 are also unaffected.)

So this is actually good news for most people coming by train from the USA. Thanks for spotting it and passing it on.
