Today is my 44th birthday, and also approximately the 25th anniversary of my entrance to convention-attending fandom, as I attended my first SF genre convention, L.A.con II, the 1984 World Science Fiction Convention, around this time 25 years ago.

I don't have anything profound to say. Most years I get a Worldcon for my birthday, or else I'm traveling to or from one. Before that, birthdays were merely the Day of Doom as it meant school started the following Tuesday. So I've rarely done special things on my birthday. Indeed, today is an ordinary work day for me, so I'd better get back to it.

Happy birthday.

Since, as we determined at Con Josè (or some similar time), you are 1 year older than I am -- to the day -- you have the only non-family birthday I can remember (and I don't remember all of my family birthdays either).

Happy birthday, and congratulations on the fannish anniversary. The 1984 Worldcon was my first Worldcon, but I had been attending conventions for five years by then. Perhaps not uncoincidentally, I am five years older than you (although my birthday isn't until next month).

My congratulations and condolences on the Back To School birthday - mine's coming up in about a week as well.

When I was a kid the lack of any kind of party bothered me, but my family didn't celebrate *anyone's* birthday, not just the kid unfortunate enough to be born when school started. With six kids, and 12 close-by cousins of similar age, it would have been an unsupportable strain - and not much fun!

Have a great day of it!

I am amazed at how long you have lasted in fandom. Alot of people last less than five years in it especially convention running. Have a great birthday and may this year be better than the last.

It surprises me sometimes, too. And yet many of the same people are still there who were established personalities when I bumbled in as a brash young Elfquest fanatic who also happened to known something about meeting procedure in 1984. Somehow they can still make me feel like a young kid -- and not in a good way. It's working with the next generations -- like Renovation chair Patty Wells' children, who were assisting with the Hugo Awards Ceremony this year -- that really makes me feel younger.

I do get Free Lunch, but not because of the birthday -- by cooincidence, the company is bringing in lunch for an annual thank-you feed. It is of course scaled-down considerably from previous years, and as I recall it was cancelled entirely last year, but the free In-N-0ut burger is appreciated.

Happy Birthday, Kevin. You've got me 3 years on cons and 5 years on Worldcons but I suspect I'm still more decrepit than you.

I expect that you're right, particularly as I've never developed a taste for alcohol. The Business Meeting is a sufficiently mind-altering state of being for me, I think.

It's surprising that you never developed a taste for alcohol. There have been a few Business Meetings when I thought a good stiff drink would be an excellent idea afterward.

My first con was Balticon back in 1981, first WorldCon was Constellation back in 1983. While I may have years on you in fandom I haven't been involved in running conventions. Kudos to you and best wishes for many more.

Happy Birthday.
I can commiserate on Birthdays begin outranked by cons. My BD of June 27 gets clobbered Every Year by Westercon. And they are less likely to move Westercon away from it's traditional dates.
And then Loscon MOVED to my wedding anniversary (the Saturday after Thanksgiving). We've been married for 31 years, we were there first.
But just remember, we are chump change in comparison with my hubby who was born December 28th. Talk about "What Birthday? You had a birthday?"
So as you wonder what do to with yourself in the next two weeks, relax and have a Fun Time. The Worldcon is over for the year, and you can take a breather, and maybe even enjoy your birthday. :)

Happy Birthday!

Hippo Birdie 2 Ewe!

(For the record, my first con was a Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Con in the late 70's or about 40 years ago. My first Worldcon wasn't until MUCH later - LAcon II in '84)
