All Wet

I got off work "early" today -- left at 5:30 PM, having been there at 6:00 AM -- and decided that I had enough energy to do my laundry tonight. While the first load was washing, I spend 30-40 minutes on the treadmill and exercise bike. I then changed over the laundry and decided that I'd earned some time in the hot tub. After ten minutes or so relaxing and soaking, I got up, reached for my room key in might right pocket, and realized that I'd left my pedometer on when I got in the hot tub.

Oops. Soaking in hot water is good for people, but not pedometers. Needless to say, it's probably dead, but I did take it back to the room, remove the battery, dry it out as much as I could, and left it setting out to dry, just in case it might decide to come back to life. I've been needing a new one for a while anyway ever since I broke the original bracket that held it to my belt.

There is a rash of pedometer deaths going around. Yesterday, getting out of the car I managed to somehow bang my backpack against mine in a way that sheared the plastic connection that holds it to its belt clip.

While technically functional, a pedometer that won't clip to a belt is of little use.

And, just for fun, when I stopped in at a Weight Watchers meeting (I used the pedometers since they conveniently tell me how many points extra I can eat because of the walking I've done) the center was out of the current model, and hasn't gotten the upgraded model in yet.

This may sound strange, but if it doesn't work after drying out, try soaking it for a while in distilled water and let it dry back out. Sometimes tap water leaves a residue, and I expect hot tub water would be even worse.

It would actually have been better to do the distilled-water rinse before it dried out the first time, but it sounds like it's too late now.

Oh, do use a fresh battery when you try, not the one that took a bath. I'm pretty sure hot tub water would be conductive enough to have discharged the battery.

Thanks for the tip. Lisa also pointed out that I need to get a new battery. I'll try to pick one up this afternoon while I'm out doing errands.
