"My return train was slightly late, having been caught in a rail traffic jam, but it was not that big a deal."
That's funny, I spent an inordinate amount of time catching trains in Japan when I was over there in April and I *think* one was late, a local service from Atami to Ito down the east coast of the Izu peninsula. I guessed it was late because of all the people on the platform looking at their watches and peering up at the station clock as well as the station stuff running (and I mean that literally) around. Over there a late train is a big deal, even if it is only a local serving the boonies. Maybe that's one reason people in Japan use trains a lot more than people in the US do.
