Amtrak customer service responded to my detailed e-mail explaining exactly which car and where on that car I think I dropped the power supply to my laptop. They sent me the generic response copying everything off the web site. I'd already done what the web site said, and when I did what the web site said -- call the destination station -- they said, "nothing turned in here," and that was that. Idiots. For all I know, that power supply is still sitting there behind the back of the seat. I'll never look at another Capitol or San Joaquin trainset the same way again, as I scan the consist looking for the car Mattole River.

Perhaps you could organize a "Mattole River expedition" some weekend where friends and cohorts could keep an eye out for that car and keep you apprised and/or sweet talk the conductor to look inside.

Interesting idea! I could also go to Oakland and hang around Jack London Square station all day (until Officials decided I was being a Threat to National Security, I bet) watching the trains go by. The utilization of the California cars being what it is, nearly every car is in use every day.
