kevin_standleeGiven my travel plans for the next couple of months and the medium-term expectation of a relocation to northern Nevada, I've been contemplating how to move things where they need to be for things like Worldcon. Google is sufficiently my friend that I found Moana Mini Storage in Reno less than one mile from the Peppermill and roughly in between the Atlantis and Peppermill. It might be worthwhile to haul the Tsuki Systems tech kit up there and put it in a small storage unit for a month or two. The other alternative appears to be to take it to Reno, haul the kit up to our hotel room in the Atlantis, then on Sunday night of the convention haul it back down to the van (we'd rather not store it in the van for a week) to carry it do the Peppermill, then reverse the process. But having our gear in a locker less than a mile from the Peppermill might just be worth it, depending on how much they charge; we'd have full use of my van the rest of the time, and moving the gear in and out of the locker is bound to be easier than in and out of a hotel room; also, we wouldn't have to live amongst the speakers and mixers and whatnot during the con. I'll have to discuss it with Lisa and check out the prices.

Date: 2011-06-18 03:52 pm (UTC)also the smallest lockers are upstairs in some places or above lower ones where you use rolling stairs, thus less desirable = less $$
last thought: wine storage. A locker the size to fit a couple of cases would be the right size for the sound equipment. I have a 2x4x4 for $44 (ground unit, I have to bend over to get in the back) but the ones above were ~10 less.

Date: 2011-06-18 04:40 pm (UTC)Another idea that Lisa suggested, which preserves the 24-hour access and is possibly more secure than storage in the van, is to rent a small U-Haul trailer, use it to hold the gear during the con, store the gear post-con in the lockers there for later retrieval, then turn in the trailer at the U-Haul outlet located right there on Virginia St. near the Peppermill.

Date: 2011-06-18 05:16 pm (UTC)Shop around on eMove.com for rates, deals. That is how I found my two lockers in two different locations based on needs. I will be merging to one (I hope) by end of summer since the climate controlled non-wine locker is just as cold as the specially designed wine storage, and I can store the bottles on-cork to minimize the humidity issue.
The idea of using a mini-trailer during Con is a great idea. And you can stage everything for easy loading for the show a day or so in advance...as in which boxes are needed first. Tell Lisa that I think that's a great idea, and I bet, again because it's Reno, you should be able to get a good deal.

Date: 2011-06-18 07:50 pm (UTC)Check with your insurance company about storage unit inclusion (especially involving state lines) for theft, fire, etc. Storage unit insurance from the rental place may be less expensive, but make sure it will cover what you put in the unit - it may have limits regarding electronics that don't match your needs. Then do your best to inventory anything going in, especially the big electrics. At least take pictures.
Though uncommon, if someone saw you moving in stuff like that you'd be a target.
I've had two storage units broken into with stuff stolen, and then not discovered for some time. Therefore I'm security over-aware.
If any unit you should get will allow it, put on two locks. At least makes any thief go to the one next door that has only one lock.
