According to this announcement, there is a newly-launched Westercon bid for Granzella's Inn in Williams, California for the 2013 convention. The vote to select the 2013 Westercon will take place next weekend in San José at Westercon 64.

And here I thought maybe bidding this year would be nice and quiet.

Isn't it past the deadline, or is this another hoax bid?

It's past the deadline for filing to be on the ballot (that was April 15). I would be very surprised if they actually file the necesary papers, but if they do, they're eligible since the Portland bid didn't file until after January 1, so all sites in any of the Westercon zones are eligible.

When was the last time a write in won?

Officially, I'm not sure a write-in has ever won; however, from the way that Ben hems and haws about it, I think there's a fairly good chance that "Both" won in the year that Phoenix and Portland were bidding for opposite weekends, and Ben was involved with fancy back-room deals with the LASFS board of directors and the bids to undo the percieved mess that would have created.

I did like the "and then everyone gets on the train" proposal for Both. As a conceptual art piece, that is; I would have been in a coma by Wednesday.

An extreme version of "it's in the other hotel."

If an ineligible bid (and a bid that doesn't file is ineligible) gets a majority of votes, the result is deadlocked and goes to the Business Meeting, which can award the bid to any group regardless of any of the Westercon location restrictions other than it has to be continental North America west of 104 west (or Hawaii) (and islands off the coast of North America are part of North America, so smart alecks saying Victoria BC isn't eligible can go away now).

OK. This got me off my fence. I just announced my own competing bid.

Ooh, I like it! Like "I-95 in '95" and "I-5 in '05." Fun!
