Not So Grate

I have written before of my love of Grate Thyme Kitchen, a restaurant that opened in downtown Fernley a year or so ago and served good food. This week they suddenly stopped being open and put up "closed for restructuring" signs in the window. This morning, when I went for a walk around downtown after breakfast, I saw new signs taped to the outside of their doors: eviction notices. Ouch. That's a pity. They made good food, but apparently weren't able to sell enough of it here in Fernley.

That's too bad. But with a population of - what? - 20,000 or so, how many restaurants can/does Fernley support? Plus, there are those casino buffets you occasionally talk about, apparently not all that far away. (We have a bit of the same problem here, with Council Bluffs casino food having put some long-time Omaha restaurants out of business.)

Actually, the only casino in Fernley with a buffet (and a poor looking one at that) also closed abruptly this week. Reno/Sparks has the big dining, and they're 30 miles west of here. Fernley is about to get a Denny's, opening this weekend out by I-80 in a newly-built truck stop/casino. Downtown Fernley, where I live, has one American-style diner, two Chinese (one buffet-style), two sit-down Mexican, and one burrito stand (which is better than the other two Mexican restaurants put together IMO). And it had Grate Thyme until this week. Yesterday afternoon we saw the property management agent with a locksmith changing the locks and putting up signs announcing that the restaurant is closed. Sad.

The loss of a beloved eatery should be classified & or allow Bereavement/Compassionate Leave, under the Employment Standards Act.
