We've done the first of four scheduled BASFA Hugo Recommendation Discussion Nights, which also include our discussion of Detcon 1's YA Award and of the 2014 John W. Campbell Award. As is usual with these, the first night in particular generates a lot of variations on, "I'll have to research things and get back to you."

Night 2 of 4 planned is next Monday, and then we'll come back and do it again the first two Mondays of March. (I'll be at home the weeks in between and thus can't be at BASFA to ride herd on recommendations.)

Except for our YA recommendations, which have to be done sooner because the deadline is the end of this month, I'll be publishing the list of the club's recommendations for the Campbell, the 2014 Hugo Awards, and the 1939 Retro-Hugo Awards on [livejournal.com profile] hugo_recommend after we've finished all four nights. I'll post the club's YA recommendations sometimes late next week.

For the Retro Hugos, I'd like to put in a good word for "Porky in Wackyland" for Best Dramatic Presentation - Short Form. No, I don't expect it to win, but I think it would be a good choice for a nomination.

Also, what's this about a YA Hugo from Detcon? I see that they're giving an award for YA science fiction or fantasy but I didn't know that it was being called a Hugo.

My bad: I've typed "YA Hugo" so many times in the past few years that my fingers slipped while I was composing the entry. Detcon 1, of course, isn't authorized to present Hugo Awards, but they're presenting an YA Fiction Award to be administered similarly to the Hugo Awards. I've corrected the mistake above.

My YA entry turns out to have been published in 2011. :-(

Because of the wording of the blanket extension, Lunarcy! (which had its Canadian premiere the week after Chicon, & its American premiere the day before last year's Hugo nominations closed) does indeed appear to be eligible. Given that it is the only commercially-released feature film I know of to include a shot of the WSFS banner, much less a segment shot at a Worldcon, I think it might fit in Best Related Work, alongside Chicks Dig Yog-Sothoth or whatever is likely to end up there this year.

Trouble is, at this point, the only way to see it in the US is via Amazon or Netflix streaming. I asked the producer if he could provide screener DVDs, but apparently the best he might be able to do is a no-cost streaming opportunity, which has the same infrastructure problem.
