I'm considering trying to write and produce a short introductory video to Business Meeting basic procedures. Not the detailed technical rules, but basic decorum like "stand to be recognized" and "one speaker at a time." If I could write the script, it occurs to me that maybe some folks attending this year's Westercon Business Meeting might be willing to stick around after the (likely very short) meeting and help shoot the footage demonstrating basic procedure on being recognized and how voting works. If you're planning on attending Westercon and would like to help, I'd like to know.

It would also of course give Lisa a better chance to field-trial the new camera and for me to get the hang of some of the conversion and editing software.

If I do, can I be the guy who messes everything up?

I know Andy T. has done similar tutorials for how to vote on site selection. He might be able to lend an ear at least.

I don't know if I'll have time or not at Westercon to help out, but if I do, I will.

I had plans to include a Business Meeting 101 video in the project that never came to be. I still have a few notes on what I wanted to do:

  • Get people in video to be in costume if possible
  • Include at least one person who can't stand up (at least not easily)
  • At least a few words about the preliminary business meeting, but not necessary to actually demonstrate it
  • Things to demonstrate:

    • Introducing/seconding a motion
    • Speaking for and against a motion
    • A vote which is lopsided enough to be decided by a show of hands
    • Serpentine voting

I was thinking mainly of people who would be coming to the BM to watch and vote without any specific agenda beyond "this is an important thing and I ought to show up and participate". In the current context, expecting that many people will be prompted to participate by Puppygate, you may want to focus on different things. Just please at least make sure to include a demonstration of serpentine voting, it would save so much time if everyone could arrive not needing that explained...

I would really appreciate something like this! Given my work schedule, I won't be able to attend the first two days of Worldcon this year or next year, but I'd like to participate in the Business Meetings. And... I haven't ever participated in them before, even though I had the opportunity. (Bad Kat.) Something like this, online for folks like me to view before-hand, would be so awesome!
