During our trip to and from Anaheim, we stopped at Pea Soup Andersen's both directions so I could indulge myself in their pea soup, which I like a lot. On the way back, I bought a package of their pea soup mix, and over the weekend, I made a batch from their recipe. Now I understand why their soup comes out so different from my own concoction. Their recipe requires you to strain the soup through a sieve before final heating. Consequently, their soup has a much finer texture than what I make. I add so many things to my soup -- potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, chopped ham -- that it comes out chunky enough to eat with a knife. Still, their recipe is good, too, and I ate the last helping of it for lunch this afternoon.

I love their soup!! I can remember it in my home as a child - it is almost a comfort food for me. I never thought about visiting their plant - how cool.

Actually, this isn't the plant where they produce the soup for commercial distribution, but the original restaurant (there are currently two; there were as many as five at one time) where they came up with it in the first place. It's located on US-101 in Buellton. (The other one is on I-5 at Santa Nella, near the CA-152 junction.)

I will have to try one of them next time I drive through -- I didn't realize they even had resturants.

If you like pea soup that actually tastes like peas, not like beans (as most pea soups do), Andersen's is for you.

Unfortunately, I don't.
