Team Player

I once again was the Team Player who monitored my team's e-mail and support ticket stream today because XPO doesn't give us Christmas Eve as a holiday anymore but does give us floating holidays. The other members of our support team have children and so it's a bigger deal for them to have the day off. We only need one person here because our main customer does take the day off and our field locations are all on skeleton staffing. I could sleep in for half an hour or so, and didn't have to necessarily hover over the computer. There was some work to do, but not a lot. It did give me a chance to catch up on some online training classes that were assigned to me.
Meanwhile, the big propane bottle needed to be refilled. Lisa left it tied to the hand truck, but she asked me to go ahead and go get it refilled without her. It was pretty cold out there; around -8°C. So I bundled up and rolled the cart down to Hanneman Service and got the bottle refilled. I also took the opportunity to give Bob Hanneman (the owner) a box of nice cookies that Lisa and I got from Cost Plus World Market. I know the traditional day for such gifts would have been December 26, but we needed the propane bottle now, so I gave it to him today. His business (which includes being the local AAA service) basically puts him on 24/7 call, and he's always been nice to me and Lisa, so we're happy to do a good turn for him.
So now I get the long holiday weekend, and on Monday I get most of the day off, although there's one hour of work that I need to do at 4:30 AM that day before saying goodbye for the rest of the day.
