Keeping Cool
May. 9th, 2022 12:12 pmThere is some irony in what I'm about to write, given that a weather system is moving through that threw near-gale-force winds and sleet at us yesterday and unseasonably cold weather today. It's enough that I've had to re-light the fireplace unexpectedly late in the year. There even are a few spots of snow on the Pah Rah mountains to the west of here, and there were chain controls over Donner Summit last night and into today.
Anyway, during the trip down to Tonopah, we confirmed that the air conditioning in the Astro is not producing cold air. There presumably was a leak in the system that allowed the coolant to run out. Fortunately, years ago (while Lisa was still in Oregon, because we had it done while we were up there), I had the van converted to the more modern, less environmentally-harmful, and (most importantly) still-legal coolant system.
I have made an appointment to take the minivan into Reno after work on Wednesday to have it worked on by the people who have worked on it in the past. Lisa (who is feeling better each day) will convoy with me in the Small Orange Pickup, and then we can do some of the shopping (or investigation for future purchases) that we would have done last week if she hadn't been laid low with what we still hope was either hay fever or mold issues that are now subsiding. We can leave the van with the shop in Reno for a few days while they fix it. By the time I need it at the end of June to haul our stuff (plus a rental trailer) to Tonopah for Westercon, I think we will need the AC in the minivan for real.
