More Westercon Shopping
May. 20th, 2022 10:10 pmAs bad luck would have it, my minivan still isn't ready. The part they need to fix the air conditioner hasn't arrive yet. Our plan had been to take the Rolling Stone to Reno, pay for and collect the Astro, and then leave the RV with the shop because it also is having air conditioning issues. (It took a little while to explain to the shop that I meant the "chassis" air conditioner, i.e. what's built into the Ford E350 upon which the Chinook RV is built, not a roof-mounted RV air conditioner.) Then we would take the minivan to go do our shopping, and in particular, the supplies we need urgently to print Westercon 74 progress report 5.
Unfortunately, due to no movement on the minivan, we've been forced to make an extra trip in the RV, which is quite expensive. Lisa's pickup doesn't have enough room to hold all of the things we needed to buy, and because it really needs a new starter, it's not a great idea to use it anyway. So despite the expense of operating the RV (it gets, at best, ten miles per gallon), we set off to Reno to buy stuff.
Y'all have been after me to buy extra ink for that new printer. I bought two sets of high-capacity ink (that is, 1 high-yield cartridge for each of the three colors and 2 black cartridges). As most people know, ink is expensive. The two sets of extra cartridges, which are supposed to be good for around 5000 impressions, together cost more than the printer itself.
In addition to the ink, we bought a whole lot of paper including a case (five reams) of tabloid/ledger/11x17 paper, on which we'll print Progress Report 5 and the Program Book. Inasmuch as we couldn't find the long-reach stapler that I know we have here, I also bought a new long-reach stapler and extra staples.
After buying all of those supplies for Westercon, we went to WinCo Foods and bought supplies for ourselves. It's been several weeks since we did a major grocery shopping run, and we ended up filling two grocery carts with stuff. It needed to be done.
The RV doesn't really hold as much as you might think. Sure, it has a large cubic area, but most of it is full of the furniture of the RV. However, Lisa managed to make everything fit, and we headed for home.
This evening, I managed to print one sample copy of PR 5. Tomorrow, we go to print. While laying things out into the format necessary to print onto tabloid paper, I spotted one error that I was able to fix before we started printing. I hope we don't find any major mistakes after we start printing for real, or worse, after we finish printing/collating/stapling.
