Some of you may have heard news reports mentioning wildfires in California and also near Reno. When I went back into Reno yesterday to buy that new cable modem, I could see the plume of smoke of what is known as the Davis Fire from far away when I was coming through the Truckee River canyon, and while I was coming and going, it was clear that the fire had flared up and was generating an immense amount of smoke. However, it was difficult to get a picture of it from any of the parking lots around town, as the buildings blocked the view.

Davis Fire

While re-entering the freeway after getting some take-out from Popeye's fried chicken in Sparks, I was able to snap these two photos while stopped at a traffic light. That's why the photos were not very good. I didn't have time to take better ones and shouldn't take them while driving anyway.

The smoke is less bad in Fernley today, and I think there is a chance of rain in a few days; unfortunately, between now and then it will remain dry and sometimes windy, which means that a Red Flag Fire Warning is up, and fighting that fire (which as of now is still 0% contained) will remain quite challenging.

Fires abound

I use the Watch Duty app to check on fires around us and around friends and saw the Bear Fire in CA and then the Davis Fire south and west of you while you were still out of country. I'm glad it is no worse, but am sure the ash is not fun to handle. Friends in southern California are suffering similarly with the many fires seemingly everywhere there, causing their skies to be orange and ashen too.

Glad you're home safely and thanks for posting updates. We lived vicariously through your travels, few travails and photos.
