Cheryl passes these two items for consideration:

Sad news from the world of publishing: the Weekly World News is shutting down.

But then, who needs the Weekly World News when you have real-life stories like Giant Squid Invading California?

The NPR report this morning said that they were going to web only, just ceasing print publication, but these stories make it sound somewhat more final. A pity, that.

A friend of mine once quipped that you could come up with a half dozen RPG ideas based on a single issue of the WWN.

Now I'll have nothing to read while waiting to pay for my jumbo squid cutlets at Safeway. :-(

BTW, these are not giant squid, which are at least an order of magnitude larger than the jumbo ones shown in the article. A friend of mine who has a doctorate in squid is going to send me some info on what the diff is, which I'll post on my LJ.

The article doesn't mention whether jumbo squid are edible, but I don't think the fishermen would be so concerned if they were. I suppose they are kind of large for marinated squid salad.
