Dodging Typhoons

By the way, we'd planned this jaunt down to Fukuoka-Hakata and (tomorrow) Nagasaki long ago, with no reference to the typhoon that is heading toward Japan. For those of you unfamiliar with Japanese geography -- particularly my mother! -- we're now down near the bottom of Japan, while the typhoon appears to be heading for the area where we were staying (and were Worldcon was last week!) and to the north. In other words, it's almost certainly going to miss me. We're not heading north again until Friday, and then only as far as Osaka. Fingers crossed that the storm will have passed by the time I'm heading toward Japan's North.

And boy are we lucky that Worldcon wasn't hit by a typhoon!

As lucky as we were that the New Orleans (or Miami) Worldcon wasn't hit by a hurricane. I did not have a car during the New Orleans Worldcon, and after reading what happened to the carless conventioneers who were in the city during Katrina (and who had been told they shouldn't bother trying to leave, by the way), I now consider that to have been a foolish risk.

We're in Osaka now, at the Hilton across from the JR station. Will be here until Sunday's check-out. Guess we should check out weather.com and see if racing on Friday will be cancelled due to rain or Equine flu.

The partiers would have just started to plan for a Typhoon party with Beau Solei and Mary Chapin Carpenter as the headliners. In all seriousness, A typhoon would not have been fun during the Worldcon.
