When I was diagnosed with diabetes, I figured I'd had my last root beer float -- a treat I've always liked, even more so after I spent time working for Baskin-Robbins ice cream. But I've found a diet root beer I like called "Teddy's," flavored with Splenda so it doesn't have the bitter taste I associate with other diet root beer. Couple that with no-sugar-added, reduced-carbohydrate Breyer's ice cream, and I can once again enjoy a root beer float.

Now it's not as though I can have them every day, though. Even reduced-carb ice cream has carbohydrates, and one of the artificial sweeteners has a laxative effect if you eat too much of it at once, which acts as a sort of limit on what I can consume. But it's still nice to have a treat I can eat that won't spike my blood sugar.

Where do you get it?

Where can I find Teddy's Root Beer? A good root beer (Henry Weinhard's, mmm ...) is one of the things that I occasionally miss.

Alas, I have yet to find it in the Bay Area. The only store in which I've found it is Winco Foods, and the nearest one I know of is in Yuba City, although I see from their web site that they have locations in the Sacramento area and elsewhere in the Central Valley. I originally found it at the one in Salem where Lisa shops, and brought back several bottles on my last trip to Oregon. I'd give you one, but unfortunately I drank the last one last night.

The best diet root beer is called Spreckel's-handmade in Wisconsin. If you ever find it, buy some.

But to be fair -- you weren't eating Root Beer Floats daily *before* either ;>.

Yea for finding healthy alternatives ;>.

I like Stewart's diet orange cream soda. They make a regular root beer, but I haven't seen a diet root beer of theirs in the stores.

They do make one, but it can be difficult to find.
