This morning, the locksmith came and quickly replaced the lock. Upon closer examination in the light of day, it was obvious that in fact someone had pried my box open. Other boxes in the same pod had pry marks on them, as did the adjacent pod, which also had another box with no lock on it. We don't think anything of value or importance was taken from my mailbox, because there was mail in it when I originally noticed the broken lock.

This afternoon, the mail carrier noticed that box was repaired and delivered the accumulated mail, which I appreciate. I won't have to go the post office to collect it.

While breaking in to mailboxes is a federal offense, I don't really know what to do about it. I reported it to the complex management and to the company that manages my rental, but what are they supposed to do?

Report it to the Post Office. This link may help:

As [livejournal.com profile] howeird said, reporting it is probably it.

I got my new plates and registration tags today at the DMV. I had to specify that the previous one (with the registration tags) was stolen, and then they wanted to know to which police department and case number it was, so I was glad I had all that registration.

I have to say I am very impressed (again) with the efficiency of the DMV in Santa Clara. Even though it was jam-packed, I didn't have to wait long and got everything taken care of faster and cheaper than I thought. I made the appointment Saturday for the earliest opening, which was this afternoon. There was no line for appointments and a very long one for people who showed up with no appointment. I had a similar good experience in renewing my license. (My only complaint is the insufficiency of parking. But this is the same location where I first took my driving test in 1974, and the area has grown somewhat since then. The size of the DMV parking lot has not.)

"...glad I had all that information," not "registration."
