This morning, I awoke with a start at 5:45 AM. That's because I'd meant to be up at 5 AM so I'd have time for my morning e-mail and such before going to my 7:30 AM dentist appointment in Redwood Shores. By dint of skipping checking most messages and charging through breakfast and a shower, I managed to get there with ten minutes to spare. It doesn't hurt that traffic wasn't heavy.

My dentist removed the temporary crown on my upper right next-to-last tooth and fitted a nice shiny gold crown into place. It wasn't quite as quick as some people suggested, but it was far less of a grind (literally) than the work two weeks ago to cut away the tooth, take the impressions, and fit the temporary crown. And, like others who commented at the time, I was definitely glad to get that gummy temporary crown out of there.

My dentist is very good. He carefully explains what he's going to do and tells you about it while he's working. At one point he said, "This is probably going to hurt a little bit."

I said, "I'll try not to complain too much."

He laughed and said, "You don't complain at all!"

"Well, yeah," I said, "But it's hard not to yelp a little when there's a sharp blast of pain." And there were a few, like when he cleaned off the uncovered tooth root with an alcohol swab. And my jaw ached badly for a while thereafter but subsided after some ibuprofen. I expect a bit of residual pain for a few days, but it should go away as the root heals after the rough treatment it has suffered.

The crown itself feels pretty good. Once it completely settles in, I think it will be a very welcome replacment for the original tooth, which had two fillings and starting to crack. I'll be happy when I can start chewing on both sides of my mouth again without worrying about putting pressure on that tooth. Don't know how well it will handle cold foods, though.

I feel you....Last Friday, I went in, had a deep cleaning on the left side with an extraction of a tooth that had a root canal and then had broken to pieces leaving jagged edges that would catch food in it and cause pain. Tomorrow a.m., I go for the other side of deep cleaning. Then work on getting two crowns in plus some other dental work and partial for the lower jaw due to not having perm teeth in one set and the other four having to be pulled because of root canals and decay. So missing six teeth on the bottom along with all four wisdoms plus the tooth she pulled Friday. After about three hours on Friday, I've not had much pain at all. Of course, prior to, had to get started on PennVK due to toothache that started on Monday and once the penicillin went to work, stopped hurting by Thursday in time for her to do all the work she'd planned on doing. I'm glad to hear about the crown not being too onerous. And my dentist managed to numb my mouth without me feeling her stick the needle in until she did it in the roof of the mouth for the tooth extraction.

Yeow! My sympathies. My dental work is nowhere near as extensive as that.

Mine is due partially to not liking last dentist, being in an alcoholic stupor for three years and then needing to find my way around San Diego before deciding on a dentist that's three blocks away.
