This morning, I decided to try out the Black Bear Diner's advertised super-breakfast, called "The Grizz." That amounted to a sweet-cream waffle, 3 eggs, 2 slices of thick-cut smoked bacon, 2 sausage links & a smoked ham steak, plus hash browns. It's huge! Indeed, I should have been asked to be seated at a larger table, as it came on two large plates that barely fit on the table at all. It was a great breakfast. And lunch. And part of a dinner. If I hadn't been planning to go buy groceries at Grocery Outlet, I would have instead walked to and from the Black Bear Diner (about 2 km each way). As it was, I got minimal groceries (nothing looked appetizing after that huge breakfast) and I went home, where I spent most of the rest of the day trying to digest all of that foot, like a snake after a big meal. As much as I liked it, I doubt I'll get it again.

It's funny, but while a big breakfast is generally my favorite meal, I've not been eating as much of late. That's probably why I lost almost 10 kg during the Iceland-UK trip, despite having hotel breakfast buffets along the way. I've gained some of it back, but not all of it.

Aside from being a potato most of the day, I did do more remote travel agency work for Lisa and Chris on their trip. Unfortunately, the storms in Europe have hit me in the wallet, as they had to cancel one of their hotel stays on such short notice (due to the necessary trains not running), that I forfeited the room. I tried contacting the hotel through booking.com (which is how I booked it), but got no answer, so I guess I'm out of luck. Worse, I still had to book another room based on their revised travel dates. I don't blame them about this, but I wish the hotels were more willing to waive their no-refunds policies when the trains stop running due to weather conditions. I wonder if they do the same for canceled flights?

Today's planned trip was relatively short (only about 150 miles even including the various detours), but because of the stops along the way and the very heavy traffic at times, it ended up taking over six hours to drive from Kingman to our hotel near Nellis Air Force Base in the North Las Vegas area.

Swing Through Laughlin )

As we approached Searchlight NV on US-95, a large shadow passed over us. We discovered an impromptu air show at Searchlight Airport.

An Unexpected Osprey )

This was quite unexpected. Indeed, Lisa was very surprised that such an aircraft would be doing stop-and-goes at a public airport like this. We weren't the only people stopping to take photos, either.

On to Las Vegas )

Because our goal tonight was the Holiday Inn Express Nellis, up on the north side of the city, we made our stops along the way, starting with lunch/dinner and then visiting a building we don't expect will be around much longer.

Black Bear Diner and the Giant Slot Machine )

By the time we left Fry's, traffic had gone from bad to worse. Rather than go onto the freeway, Lisa decided to just drive down Las Vegas Blvd — the world-famous "Las Vegas Strip." Now I'm glad we did it just to experience how much Vegas has mushroomed, but it took a long time (more than an hour) to make the trip, and thus it was well after dark before we got to the hotel. I still had some Day Jobbe stuff to do as well.

We've regained the hour we lost when we headed into Arizona a week ago, but I give it right back because now I have to be up at 4:40 instead of 5:40 to do my half-day of Day Jobbe work, as I must match my co-workers hours in the Central Time Zone.

Tomorrow we head for Tonopah, and if the weather holds as it appears to be heading, we plan to take the road even less traveled than US-95 north of Las Vegas.

As we drove home from Sacramento yesterday, we briefly though we were only a couple of days from having to leave for Utah and SpikeCon/Westercon/NASFiC; we actually leave a week from tomorrow. We took our time driving home, stopping in Roseville to look in Fry's (they seem to be having supplier issues with the parts Lisa wants) before stopping for breakfast at Kuma Bear's favorite restaurant.

Un-bearably Cute )

After breakfast we went to Railroad Hobbies in Roseville and spent more money than probably was wise, before turning for home. But because we had plenty of time, we did a little bit of side-road exploration. I now think I've driven (not all on the same day) all of the remaining continuous sections old US-40 between Sacramento and Truckee, and some of the discontinuous ones.

This week we both have to rest a bit from last weekend but also pack for Utah. That means packing all of the Match Game SF gear plus the Tonopah Westercon bid, plus our own personal luggage of course, but the latter often feels like an afterthought. Lisa is not bringing the large P2 camera for this trip because she's testing out a smaller rig at Westercon in the hope of using it for Dublin, and that helps a little on space.
