Today was a mostly non-rail tourism day, as we needed to put miles behind us and get to Utah.

Our Destination )

To get to Green River meant traversing a lot of Colorado, including our one train-related stop.

A Look in at the Loop )

After our short stop at the Georgetown Loop RR, we continued west. Scenery was lovely, and we got a very good lunch. And then I pulled a goof that cost us an hour.

To Glenwood Canyon -- Three Times in One Day )

After the unexpected delay after lunch in Eagle, we pressed on for Green River.

More Massive Vistas )

We got into Green River much later than we planned. On a previous train trip, we overheard a conductor on the Zephyr dealing with a woman who had boarded the train without a ticket at Helper UT. He offered to take her as far as Grand Junction, but she said she wanted off at Green River. He strongly urged against this. Having had a look at Green River by road, we tend to agree. But we're only here for one night. Tomorrow we traverse the rest of Utah on our way to Wendover and our final night on the road.

This morning we packed out of the hotel without incident and hit the road for Manitou Springs and the Cog Railway to the top of Pike's Peak.

Pike's Peak Without Busting )

It had been a pleasant summer afternoon down in Manitou Springs, but as we neared the summit we closed the windows to keep the snow from coming in.

The Snows of August )

We took a whole lot of photos. Click through any of those above, or see my Pike's Peak Cog Railway album.

We did see wildlife, but it was elusive and camera-shy. On the way up, we saw a bighorn sheep, and Lisa saw a marmot (there are apparently many of them on the mountain). Coming down, we saw a deer. And there were lots of birds, even up on the snowy wastes near the top.

One more Cog Railway photo )

Before leaving the area, we stopped for an early dinner at a Black Bear Diner in Colorado Springs (starting level 4 in their Passport program of collecting restaurants). Lisa then drove us up to Denver. At times, we could see trains operating on the UP/BNSF "Joint Line" that parallels I-25. We skirted the Denver area on our way to the hotel in Golden, where we were happy to arrive relatively early.

This second day of riding trains was also great fun. I sort of wish we'd had maybe another fifteen or twenty minutes at the top, but given that I could feel the altitude, perhaps it's just as well that we left when we did. And after the oppressive heat driving through Kansas, I was happy to be in the snow at the top of Pike's Peak.

Tomorrow we head west on I-70, bound for Green River UT.

Today we did drive about 100 miles (from Pueblo to Cañon City and back), but we began and ended the day at the same hotel (the Holiday Inn Express Pueblo), as we went up to ride the Royal Gorge Railroad, an excursion through the spectacular Royal Gorge of the Arkansas River.

A Great Day on the Railroad )

The photos I've included here are only a small sample of the photos Lisa and I took today. And they are only a pale reflection of the real thing. If I lived closer to here, I think I might spring for the $199 annual pass, which gives unlimited travel (meals not included) in dome class or lower for the season, just to enjoy the view more often.

Lisa slept most of the way back to Pueblo, and when we got back to the hotel, both of us fell into bed: me for a short nap, and Lisa for a longer sleep. We stayed in the rest of the day and tried to recuperate from travel and conventioneering.

As bad luck would have it, this was the first Holiday Inn Express on the entire trip that was unable to give us the room upgrade we wanted, because they were full up. That's a shame, given that we were here for two days, but at least they were able to provide us with a mini-fridge. (This property, unlike most HIXs, doesn't provide them standard in all rooms.) Nevertheless, we're happy for the break.

We have decided to scrap the trip to Ely and return via US-50 (despite having driven a significant portion of US-50 during our return since we left Kansas City). We simply can't afford the time. I booked us a hotel in Wendover and canceled our reservation at the Hotel Nevada, which will have to wait for another trip sometime.

Tomorrow we have to be up extra early so we can get up to the Pike's Peak Railway.

Today's planned journey was only about 250 miles, but we seriously took our time doing it, because there was so much to see. When we checked in to the Cheyenne Holiday Inn Express last night, I told the front desk agent that we'd be driving to North Platte, Nebraska today and he said, "Well, you'll be very bored." Boy, was he wrong.

As with the other entries in this series, click through to Flickr to see more photos. I hope some of you are doing so. I've been cataloging and tagging them all.

Wyoming Transportation Museum )

We had budgeted two hours for the museum. It wasn't enough. At least three would have been better. As it was, I felt I was rushing, because I like to read displays and look at things.

In the gift shop, Lisa bought me a big thick two-volume history of the Union Pacific railroad as a birthday present. (My birthday is August 27.) We then set off to leave Cheyenne and pick up a couple of "targets of opportunity" on the way out of town.

Cheyenne's Big Boy and the Merci Train )

After refueling (wow, gasoline for less than $2/gallon!) on the outskirts of Cheyenne, we got onto I-80 and sped east toward Nebraska. We pulled off at the Welcome Center at Kimball, collected maps, and got away from the freeway, as it was our plan to try and stay on US-30 and follow the railroad today.

Museums We Couldn't Visit, and a Detour into Colorado )

Thanks to our circuitous route and moving into the Central Time Zone after Paxton, we did not get to the Holiday Inn Express in North Platte until nearly 10 PM local time. Tomorrow we backtrack slightly to go over to the Golden Spike Tower overlooking UP's Bailey Yard. Lisa has been studying maps of the yard to get an idea of what we'll be looking at tomorrow.
