I find that I do not really like being crammed into a CRJ900 on a long flight in the non-reclining last row of the plane. The exit row on the 757 between SLC and OAK was much nicer, even on a completely full flight.

I'm home, tired, about to fall into bed and dreading having to go to work in the morning. It's not MARCon's fault that there aren't a lot of good flights back to Oakland.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
Going downstairs to check out just at Noon, I found the GOH Liaison. After checking out and printing my boarding passes for my flight this afternoon, I asked her if any other guests were left on site but me. She said that Toni Weisskopf was going out in about fifteen minutes, at which point I realized she was sitting nearby with her luggage. I suggested that, if it wasn't any extra bother, I could ride to the airport with her. Sure, it's three hours early, but I didn't have anything else to do and the wi-fi is free at the airport and I've got things with which to amuse myself. She said that would be great, particularly because once I was gone, her job as GOH Liaison was done and she could go home herself.

I said, "Oh, you don't have to wait on me; I can take care of myself." She said that she knew that, but it was her job. I could understand that motivation.

She called the limo company and made the necessary changes, and we sat with Toni until the car came for us for the short drive over to CMH. Although my 4:45 flight today will be full, at this hour there's nothing going on here on the Delta C concourse. As this isn't a hub airport, there's no "bank" of flights coming and going. I assume it will get much busier as departure time for the various afternoon flights approaches.

There are certain advantages to such early arrivals. There were only two people in the queue ahead of me at Terrorization. I had my pick of places to sit. Unfortunately, most of the places where there are seats have no outlets, and most of the places where there are power outlets have no seats, except for an area labeled "Wai-Fai Beach," where there's a surfboard with power outlets and chairs. That's where I set up shop. I have two Super 14 Rugby matches to watch, books to read, and so forth, so it should be a pretty restful afternoon.

I have a long layover at SLC, but there are no quicker alternatives back to the Bay Area today, so I'm settling in for the long wait.

It's been a very nice weekend, and the folks from MARCon made me feel very welcome indeed. I'm glad I was able to add my bit to the proceedings and that they considered me worth their investment in resources.
kevin_standlee: Kevin after losing a lot of weight. He peaked at 330, but over the following years got it down to 220 and continues to lose weight. (Default)
As expected, everything at the hotel/convention center area was closed this morning, so I went for a morning walk in search of anything that might be open for breakfast. I found a little greasy-spoon diner that served a cholesterol bomb of a breakfast, so I reckon it's a good think I walked about 4 km getting there and back.

Now I need to finish packing out of the room and store my bags for a couple of hours before going to the airport.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
Despite not winding down sufficiently to go to sleep until after 2 AM, I awoke on my own a little after 8 AM. Reaching over to reset my alarm so it wouldn't go off, I found that I apparently hadn't even turned it on properly last night and it never would have gone off. Well, I'm glad I woke up on my own then.

I'm in no particular hurry this morning, though. I guess the real challenge may be in finding breakfast anywhere other than the hotel restaurant, as everything around here will now be closed for Memorial Day and with nothing to keep it open now that the convention is gone.

Lisa called me while I was in the Dead Dog Party to inform me of her initial progress to the Indiana state line. She said things were a little slow because she'd stopped to indulge in a couple of guilty pleasures which are unobtainable on the west coast: White Castle (only two burgers, she said) and Waffle House. Other than that, things have been going just fine once she fixed that balky battery cable just before she left Columbus. She's happier to have to fix that cable now rather than in a rainstorm in the middle of Wyoming.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
I spent much of this evening in the Dead Dog Party. I had a good time, and continued to be impressed by the huge spread of food they had here in the MARCon Con Suite. Their Con Suite space -- a former hotel restaurant area -- is a really good space, other than having a section that isn't wheelchair-accessible. (They've arranged the room so that isn't really a problem, I think.) Being on the ground floor means that people don't have to brave the elevators to get there, and it's got lots of room; however, I found it very warm and stuffy. I just figured that was me (I'm normally overheated most of the time anyway), but other people were telling me the same thing.

I spoke with lots of people, although not as many as I might have wanted, especially as some of the folks I might have wanted to talk to more here were working on the con and were looking especially ragged. I expect that after making their appearance at the Dead Dog announcements, many of them headed to their rooms and crashed. I can't blame them.

Thanks to having had perhaps a bit too much Diet Coke with my slice of pizza, I am still a little bit wound up, but I went back to my room where I finally seem to have managed to get the air conditioning to keep the room at the temperature I want. Since I'm not exactly tired just yet, I reckon that I should be useful and do some packing, to make things easier tomorrow morning. Not that I'm in much of a hurry, what with my flight not being until late afternoon. My ride to the airport is supposed to collect me at 2:45 PM.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Captain 2)
I have posted a backdated entry with some photos and fuller description of my afternoon here at MARCon. Anyone who complains at me about bandwidth-sucking photos has been warned not to look.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
After taking the first load of stuff down to Lisa's pickup truck, I mentioned that I was feeling a little hungry, and Lisa decided that maybe we'd better get lunch before she left. It was after 4 PM, and the North Market closes at 5 on Sunday, so we hot-footed it down there and got lunch. We had more bread than we could eat, and we needed a walk after lunch (me for my diabetes, Lisa because she's about to be sitting for most of the next week), so we walked down to the riverfront and fed our surplus bread to the geese. I wish I'd brought the camera, because there is interesting stuff I would have photographed liked the steam turbines outside the AEP Building. (Oho, a little Googling finds it.) Finally, we got back to the hotel and packed out the second and final load to the pickup. Lisa was not looking forward to leaving, because the long-range weather forecast says she'll be in light-to-heavy rain nearly all the way back to Oregon, however, it was time to go and after I paid for the parking, off she drove. I went back to the hotel and went up the to room to polish off backed-up e-mail and think of what to do next.

After a while, I heard a key in the lock. It was Lisa, who had forgotten to give me her key. Just after leaving, she realized that there was a small problem with the pickup, and she found a parking space diagonally opposite the hotel, pulled over, and started working on it. She waved at me walking by half a block away, but I was lost in my own thoughts and didn't see her. After spending 45 minutes or so fixing a loose connection, she came back up to the room to clean up and give me the room key. I walked back down with her, we checked the map, and determined that she could just drive straight ahead, turn left, and get onto the freeway that would take her back to I-70 westbound eventually. I watched her drive onto the freeway and made sure she was actually gone before going across the street and back inside.

At this point, I went into the Drury Inn, which is where SMOFCon will be, just to see how it's connected to the Food Court. It's not the most convenient connection I've ever seen, but it probably won't matter that much during SMOFCon.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
My last panels are done (photos later) and I attended the feedback session where I thanked the management for being so kind to me and for everyone's hospitality here in Columbus. As I said, standing there in my WSFS uniform, "The White Star Federated Spaceways takes its hat off for you." And I did.

Then it was time to get Lisa moved out. We went to the room, changed out of our uniforms, and Lisa started packing. She wanted to head out earlier this afternoon, but there were panels and such to do. In a few minutes, I'll help her move stuff down to her pickup parked in the garage attached to the Hyatt and Crowne Plaza by skywalks.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Captain 2)
There are photos behind the cuts in this message. I'm posting it out of order because I didn't get the photos cropped and cleaned until after Lisa left, and I wanted to write about that while it was fresh in my mind.

At L.A.con IV, I went by the Autograph Tables one afternoon and saw Walter Koenig sitting there with not one person talking to him while nearby was a large queue for David Gerrold. I actually went and talked to Koenig for a few minutes because I felt a little bad for him, but it did seem like a funny situation to me at the time.

I figured I'd be like Koenig at my scheduled autograph session at Noon today. So people could recognize me by my picture in the program book, Lisa and I put on our WSFS uniforms, and we set up at the tables outside the Dealers Room.

Captain on Deck )

After running a short errand for [livejournal.com profile] johno into the Dealers Room, I settled down to wait for not much to happen. Lisa came and sat next to me and we talked.

Then, out of nowhere, amazingly, an autograph seeker appeared!

Amazing! )

And a photo of the WSFS trio as well )

My 45 minutes complete, I moved on to my final panel, where I was joined by Mark Evans and we spent an entertaining 75 minutes talking to an audience of 18 people on that old favorite subject of "Convention Disasters." We talked about the lines at ConFranciso, the 14-hour ballot count, the SWAT Team at Disclave, the DripClave fiasco (mentioning the first tends to trigger memories of the second; I freely admitted that I had been present at neither), and many others. Not all of them could be considered disasters as much as annoyances, I guess. At the end, I summed up by suggesting that the disasters were of two major types: Ones that could have avoided by better planning, and those that would have been difficult or impossible to avoid. I also pointed out that one of the reasons we tell these tales is to try and keep the memory alive so that other people will not repeat the avoidable errors.

My duties as FGOH now formally complete, I headed over to the Feedback Session, as I describe elsewhere.

Edit, 27 May 0800: Fixed an error pointed out in comments.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
My internet connection turns into a pumpkin soon and in order to avoid having to renew it more than once more on this trip, I don't expect to sign in again until late this afternoon. After breakfast but before my Noon Autograph session (about which I continue to scratch my head) and 1 PM panel, I need to help Lisa pack the heaviest stuff out to her pickup, for she will be heading out mid-afternoon today. I'm here until tomorrow afternoon, so I don't have to worry about packing until tomorrow morning.

My thanks to people who have chimed in over the drinking issue overnight. I probably have some significant blind spots on this issue, given that I have no taste for alcohol and therefore almost never serve it at parties I host. Although I do remember a MythAdventures Fan Club party I was hosting where some loud and pretty lubricated people came in demanding, "Where's the beer!"

I said, "We don't have any." They made loud noises of dissatisfaction. I asked them, "Is there any chance you'd join the club if we served beer,"

They said, "Hell, no!"

I asked, as reasonably as I could, "Then why should we bother serving it?" They had no answer to that and left.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
I've not attended many conventions in the Midwest, other than some Worldcons, one Wiscon, and one World Fantasy Con (Minneapolis). So I'm not immersed in the regional conventional traditions, and it came as a bit of a surprise to me to see just how alcohol-focussed the parties that we found here at MARCon seemed to be. It's not that we begrudge anyone their drinks. Lisa and I aren't anti-drinking; we just do not enjoy it ourselves. We actually find it a bit off-putting to have photo ID demanded of us at the door of parties.

(If I were serving alcohol, I would do my ID check at the point of service, not at the door. But if you make the basic assumption that "the only people I want in my party are drinkers," it makes more sense to do the ID check at the door. That does screen Lisa and me out, though.)

In Search of Parties )

As we headed up the elevators, we crossed paths with Rebecca Forstadt and her boyfriend yet again. Turns out that if we had walked up to the same convenience store as we did last night -- Lisa says she's too tired to do that -- we probably would have met them at about the same place as the last two times.

I'm afraid we're back in the room before midnight, though. As I mentioned earlier, travel fatigue has been catching up to Lisa, and there just didn't seem to be a whole lot of things in which I was interested tonight. As I grow older, my ability to pick up conversations in loud rooms declines, so I'm not so fond of parties full of loud music as I might once have been. Guess I'm just getting to be an old Phart. Oh, wait a minute, I am one, aren't I? It says so on that Get Out of Worldcon Free Card.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Captain 2)
Lisa and I donned our WSFS uniforms this afternoon and went down to mingle and look around. We poked our heads into Ops where Kim Williams (and others) were not busy (this is good) and said hello, then went over to the Dealers Room. Just outside the hall, Rebecca Forstadt was signing autographs and selling various things, including the ROBOTECH soundtrack CD. We certainly had to get one of those if only to get "Lynn Minmei" to autograph a CD to Lisa Hayes.

We ended up spending a lot more money than I usual spend in a dealers room these days. I reckon this may be because we've seen most of the stuff that dealers on the West Coast circuit have, whereas many of these folks are new (to us). We were in the Dealers Room much longer than I expected, browsing various dealers' wares, socializing with people, having our picture taken, and handing out my business card with the link to the long version of the WSFS Armadillo story.

We got as far as the entrance to the Art Show, but they require all bags to be checked, and Kuma Bear rides in Lisa's bag and certainly wasn't going to ride to the bag check, so we'll have to skip the Art Show. We tried to make ourselves visible and accessible around the con as much as I could, walking the hallways, going through the Gaming area, and so forth. After a while, Lisa said she was getting tired and a little hungry.

There's no way we were going to eat in those all-white outfits. While they can be cleaned, they're natural attractants to dark staining things. So we went back to the room and changed into "civvies" and went out looking for dinner. The North Market is only open until 5 or 6 O'clock, and after walking that far, Lisa decided we didn't need a fancy sit-down meal, so we headed back to the food court at the convention center, where we got a burger and fries.

Lisa is a bit more tired than I am -- probably the cumulative fatigue of the 2500-mile drive from Oregon catching up with her -- and is not generally interested in convention masquerades anyway, so we decided the better part of valor was to get back upstairs while the masquerade was running. We could move between floors by stairs once we were up there.

Again, I don't want to be a hide-in-his-room guest, but we did need some unwind time. We'll make the rounds of the parties a little later. For now, I'm taking the chance to work off some of the backlog of unread e-mail.
kevin_standlee: (SMOF Zone)
For the benefit of anyone not reading beyond the top-level entries and therefore not seeing the comments: I spoke with Kim Williams this afternoon, and she told us that the SMOFCon web site for this December's SMOFCon in Columbus should be online within a few weeks. I didn't try to get her to give me a specific date or anything like that, but she did seem confident that it would be up and running soon.

Update, 21:15: And now I've had pointed out to me what appears to be the SMOFCon 26 web site. It hasn't yet been linked in to the SMOFCon page.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
My first panel this afternoon was about Virtual Communities (MySpace, LiveJournal, etc.). I'm not sure whether we shed any further light on the subject, but we enjoyed talking about it. I pointed out that a lot of the behaviors about which they were complaining aren't much different than what used to happen when fanac was by postcard and fanzine, but it just moves much faster, with drama that once took months happening in minutes.

Then it was on to my panel on "Doctor Who Fan Vids." Due to unfortunate miscommunication, I didn't realize that the entire 75-minute block was mine, so I only brought the "Making of" films, as I mentioned earlier. We might have been able to show the entire The Zombie Legions if we'd started it within a minute or two of the start and ran slightly overtime into the 15-minute changeover. As it was, the thirty or so people in the audience were very appreciative of what we did show in the "Making Of." If you're one of the people who were there who have first encountered this LJ because you came here on account of me referring to it, thank you! It's always fun to show this film before an appreciative audience. I'm only kicking myself for not bringing the full-length film along "just in case."

A point I made in both these panels was that IMO there is no One True Core Fannish Way and that there are lots of different ways to be fannish, and that all of them are "right." My entire life is a living testament to this attitude.

After the panels, we had a stop in ConOps where I picked up my GOH per diem money. (There was no urgency about this; I have credit cards.) Then we grabbed a snack in the Green Room and came back to the room for a short while to clean up and change into our WSFS uniforms. We'll be heading out to walk around the convention during this "prime time." While Lisa is taking a quick bath, I need to find the business cards I printed with the "Why is he wearing a ship's captain uniform" business cards that point at the long version of the story.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
One of the restaurants in the food court does Breakfast All Day, which suits me just fine, thank you. As my panels don't start until 1 PM, I was in no hurry to get moving. I keep reminding myself that I'm the con's guest, I'm not working in the conventional sense (other than approaching my job as FGoH seriously), I'm not running a fan table, etc., so there's no reason to kill myself on my hours. Lisa and I went downstairs to Chicken & Eggs and had breakfast.

Along the way, we ran across Kim Williams, MARCON's hotel liaison and former chair of the Columbus Worldcon bid. We chatted for a few minutes, and we told her how we'd scoped out the convention facilities (including the convention center proper next door). As someone who has run the Events division of a Worldcon, I was particularly impressed by the facilities mix in the Hyatt, where they have a hall suitable for hosting the Hugos/Masquerade (somewhat like the arena in which ConJose's major events were held, but without the fixed stage) and also the 1000-seat ballroom in which Programming can put those huge program items without using the Events space. (It's common to assume that the Big Hall is always available during the day because "there's nothing going on in there" when in fact for a Worldcon, you're using that space all day long for rehearsal and setup.)

Anyway, after a simple breakfast, we ran back up to the room, where in a few minutes we will head back downstairs for the first of my two program items, "MySpace and the Evolution of the Virtual Community." I won't be able to address MySpace (I have an account there but don't use it), but can talk about LiveJournal fan space, I think. After that, there's a slot for "Doctor Who Fan Vids," which I learned when I got here was intended for me to show one of my two videos, but because I misunderstood the directions, I thought I was sharing with other people and therefore only brought the 15-minute "Making of" documentary. It would have been a near thing to show all of The Zombie Legions anyway in the 75-minute program slot.

And I'm also making use of having activated the T-Mobile account for today by downloading the Super 14 rugby semi-finals. I'll activate the downloads while connected, and then I can watch one of them on the plane ride home, assuming I can unfold the computer sufficiently to see the screen.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
[Back-dated because I didn't pay for another day of T-Mobile connectivity until I got up this morning.]

Lisa and I spend some time looking around Friday evening's activities, but didn't find much to our taste. The Con Suite was full of karaoke, from which Lisa pulled me before I was tempted to see if I really can get in the right key for certain Billy Joel songs. We then decided to go up to what we were told was the party floor (5th). After waiting a while for elevators and letting one go by that was already full, we decided to walk. One nice thing about this hotel is that you can actually get from the ground floor to the upper floors by stairs. That is, the stairs down to the ground floor are not "emergency only - alarm will sound" type. OTOH, we discovered that due to some mysterious internal configuration issue, there are twelve flights of stairs between the third and fourth floors, rather than the two flights found between most other floors. So the fifth floor is more like the tenth or eleventh. Still, we needed the exercise.

Once we reached the fifth floor, we found only one party. Other fans present said that things are normally slow on Friday night and that we should expect more on Saturday.

Having run out of things to do and -- I hope -- done my best to make myself available, we decided to go for a walk outside the hotel. Specifically, we planned to walk to a convenience store we'd spotted during one of our other walks. Heading up High Street, we crossed paths again with Rebecca Forstadt and her boyfriend, who had walked down to a tapas bar located in the Short North area. I was worrying that they'd think we were stalking them or something like that, but it's sheer coincidence.

Incidentally, SMOFCon will be here in this same city in December (assuming they get themselves together -- there's no sign of any organization that I know of yet, and I've not spoken to its organizers this weekend yet). I assume that the Drury Inn in which they're located (and for which I have a reservation) is the one that adjoins the Convention Center. If this is the case, then we'll be well set for dinner expeditions during the convention, as this is an area well-situated for food.

Anyway, after buying a few things from the mini-market, we headed back to the hotel and, as it was after midnight, turned in for the night.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
MARCon's Opening Ceremonies opened with a bang, or rather a lot of bangs, as in banging on a drum, as a drummer led a parade of different fan groups who are running fan tables at the convention. After that, Toastmaster Steven Brust opened by announcing, for the benefit of anyone who hadn't yet heard, about Robert Asprin's death and that Jody Lynn Nye and Bill Fawcett will consequently not be attending either. Trying to make the best of things, he went on to introduce the rest of the Guests of Honor, including me. None of us actually said or did anything other than wave to the audience, except for Alexander James, who sang the title cut from his new album (shipping in about three weeks).

A photo from the Opening Ceremonies )

Brust also made an official announcement of the launch of the Reno in 2011 Worldcon bid. They have a table here at MARCon as well.

And that was about that. Things having broken up a little early, Lisa and I had a chance to go grab a bite of dinner in the food court located one flight of escalators down from the function space before going to an interview with Rebecca Forstadt, which was a relatively intimate affair, with only twenty or so people present.

Then we came upstairs so we could get a photo uploaded and an entry made before my internet time runs out for today. We'll head back out in a few minutes to be sociable.
kevin_standlee: (Manga Kevin)
After finally dragging ourselves out of bed, we headed out to find food. We went north along High Street and through the Short North Arts District. To our right was the Columbus Convention Center, which is built out over the railroad tracks and the freeway, both of which are depressed through this area. The Convention Center seems pretty big, and there are several hotels in the area other than the attached Hyatt. From my cursory survey, there seems little doubt that from a facilities standpoint, Columbus could have easily hosted a Worldcon. It probably would have been a bit like downtown San Jose, where if you turn one way you have forbidding-looking office towers, parking garages, and similar urban wasteland, but if you turn the other, you find a district full of shops, clubs, and restaurants, all quite walkable.

We continued up High Street, where we happened to come upon Rebecca Forstadt and her boyfriend Doug walking back the other way. After talking with them, we realized that we were off by one street for the North Market, a market area sort of like the marketplace next to the Pennsylvania Convention Center at MilPhil. We walked back to the market and had lunch there, Lisa buying a large chunk of freshly-baked focaccia bread and me getting lamb curry over basmati rice.

Then, needing to walk off the lunch, we headed down past the Nationwide Arena to the riverside park and up the river, looking at the replica of the Santa Maria moored there as well, before looping back up to street level and to the hotel. I found the weather just right, although I wish I'd brought my sunglasses.

Convention programming is just starting up, so in a few minutes we're going to head down and get familiar with the convention space before the opening ceremonies, which are at 7 PM.

Because the T-Mobile service is a 24-hour day, I may not log back in late tonight if today's time has expired -- I'll wait until tomorrow morning.

Slow Start

kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
Because MARCON doesn't get going until late on Friday, and my own first commitment isn't until 7 PM this evening, we saw no need to set an alarm or worry about getting up early. Consequently, we didn't even wake up until 11 AM. After having spent five days sleeping in the "comfort" of the back of her pickup truck, Lisa found it difficult to sleep in a big comfy bed and was very restless. I was still probably running a bit on Pacific time notwithstanding a bit of time-shifting yesterday.

We will pull ourselves together soon and get out and explore around for lunch fairly soon, but as I'm paying for the internet on a 24-hour basis, I figured I'd better check my mail now. To my annoyance, I find that T-Mobile's connection here won't support the Cisco VPN software from my work, so I can't connect directly to the company network and get my e-mail. I can get at the mail from the web-mail connection, but it's still irritating. OTOH, now I can't be tempted to try and work on the job-related issue that someone left on my voice-mail yesterday (despite my voice-mail greeting saying "I'm on vacation until after Memorial Day").
