It's now confirmed as any travel is at my company that I'm flying out to Chicago on October 4 to attend meetings in our Aurora office that week. I'll fly from there to Portland on October 8 and work from Mehama during most of October. Getting back to the Bay Area is on my own nickle, but it's okay with the management if I return to PDX instead of SFO since it costs about the same either way.

...but it also means I've precious little time to look at blogs, LJ, or even non-work related e-mail this week as we have multiple jobs using much of my time. If it weren't for the fact that I expect that Lisa wants me to look things up for her tomorrow, I wouldn't come back over here on Saturday, either.

This morning, as I was groggily thinking of getting out of bed after having hit the snooze bar several times, I heard KCBS activate the Emergency Alert System not for a test. The alert was for a storm with potential for golf-ball sized hail in the Santa Cruz Mountains, crossing state highway 17 shortly. Now my commute takes me nowhere near that area, but I was still very grateful that I could work from home today and not go out into that storm. (I do have to do so sometime later this afternoon in order to deposit a check I'd like to get into the bank before closing time today; however that's not a long trip and I hope won't be too big a deal.)

Meanwhile, time to buckle down on this analysis project.

Off I Go

I'm leaving in a few minutes to walk to the train station on the first stage of my trip to Chicago. As I said earlier, I may be only intermittently in contact for these next four days.

As my cold had not improved, I worked again from home, sparing my co-workers from further risk of infection. As I observed in my e-mail to my supervisor, "In the old days (five years ago!), I could have dragged myself into the office," but instead I only had to drag myself to my desk at home.

I was feeling a bit better after lunch, and went for a walk around Quarry Lakes. About 5 PM or so, though, all of the energy went out of me, and I lay down and napped for a couple of hours. Then I got up and went back to work, because I'd promised some results today and hadn't delivered them yet. Now I can finally rest with a clear mind.

Part of yesterday's activities following the long meeting was a dinner cruise on Lake Tahoe. As the day's meetings ended, a headcount determined that not all of the people attending the meeting would be going on the cruise. They therefore invited supernumeraries like Lisa to come along since the spots on the boat were already paid for. I had previously put Lisa on alert (and determined that she was interested in going), so she was ready to go on short notice. At 4:30, those of us who were going dutifully loaded onto a bus that took us down to Zephyr Cove, where we boarded a small dinner-cruise ship.

Thank goodness the weather cooperated. If it had been like it was on Tuesday or how it is supposed to be today, we would have just stayed tied up at the dock, but as it was, the weather was relatively clear, and we puttered out onto the lake, with many of us going up on the outside upper deck to watch the sunset. Lisa and I took advantage of the open bar to get hot cider and hot chocolate. As the sun set, word came that we should take our seats for dinner, so we headed below and inside and availed ourselves of the buffet.

It was a pleasant little trip. Heading back, some of us went outside for short periods again, where a clear sky showed lots of stars above and the lights of Tahoe ahead of us.

Everything went uneventfully, and we were back in the hotel before 8 PM. After warming back up, Lisa and I walked down to Raley's again for the exercise and to get some small supplies.

Now it's back to all day meetings for me.

I was fortunate to be looking at the seat assignments for my flight to New Jersey on November 26. I saw that an aisle seat had opened up, so I quickly changed my seat from the middle to which I'd been initially assigned to the open aisle seat. While I'm not really looking forward to a full flight the Monday after Thanksgiving -- airports are likely to still be a mess -- now having aisle seat assignments on both the out and back trips makes me feel a little bit better.

Having worn my WSFS uniform to my office last Halloween, I was down to one other outfit that still fits.
Maybe I Should Have Worn This While Presiding over the WSFS Business Meeting )

I don't think I'll be able to lose enough weight in one year to fit into any of my other costumes, but I can always dream.
