This morning I had an errand to run that took me by the first station.

I could see that there were a lot of children at the event, none of whom were even born in 2001.

Although I think it might end up being slightly cooler here than in places less used to it, like the Pacific Northwest. (Not that 37-40°C is cool, of course.) Stay hydrated and under cover, everyone!

Sounds like good advice to me.

Most of the snow from the January storms has melted other than isolated shady spots and places where it was piled up; however, shortly after the snow ended, the North Lyon County Fire Protection District posted a piece of good advice. I remembered to take a picture of it today on our way back from the post office.

Odd Locks

Most of the call-outs in the North Lyon County Fire Protection District are not fires, but medical calls. Indeed, the Chief said, while presenting the annual report to the Board at their last meeting (I attended via Zoom) said, "I sometimes feel like I'm an EMS Chief that sometimes puts out fires." As I have the fire radio frequencies programmed into the scanner, I follow what's going on. Today there was an odd coincidence.

The first call I noticed was for a child locked inside a car. This happens periodically. The vehicle in this case wasn't running, and it's neither dangerously hot or cold. So not an especially dangerous situation, but something that needed to be resolved.

A few minutes later, I heard the dispatch tone again, followed by the dispatcher calling for a "child locked in a car" rescue. At first I though they'd somehow duplicated a call, but it turned out to be a totally different call in a different part of town. The rescue unit dispatched to the first call had just completed getting the baby out of the car and said they'd respond to the second call.

Two consecutive unrelated child-locked-in-car incidents is not something I'd expect in our town of 20,000 people. I'm glad both incidents were non-life-threatening.

After most of a month with ordinary notices ("Fireworks are illegal in Lyon County"), the North Lyon County Fire Protection District has returned to dispensing free advice.

They do Have a Point )

I got to take this picture because thunderstorms yesterday afternoon lowered the temperature enough that I could walk to the post office without risking heatstroke. I did get rained on a little on the way back, but it was still so warm that it mostly evaporated by the time I was home.

Step it Up

Between the high school graduation and "fireworks season," the North Lyon County Fire Protection District signs have been much more serious. But they did get a brief window just before Independence Day to put their tongue back in their cheek.

As we approach Independence Day, the fire department and other agencies are reminding people that all fireworks are prohibited in Lyon County. Given the local conditions, this is a good restriction, but one that many people ignore. I already have heard at least one report on the emergency services scanner of "shots fired" that upon investigation turn out to be people shooting off fireworks. So the North Lyon County Fire Protection District has a timely warning on their sign this week.

Short Arms )

Fireworks are entertaining to watch, but can also be very dangerous. Don't be like T-Rex.

Twelve-hour days at the Day Jobbe leave me with little other time for creativity, so here's a sign at the fire department that was so long that it needed three panels on the matrix board.

How Do You Know... )

You might have to put it on repeat because it goes by rather fast.

There was Train Drama yesterday that I was out photographing and recording, but I also put in 8 hours on Day Jobbe for some reports that were urgently required for first thing Monday morning, and now it turns out that there are other reports that they forgot to ask for that will keep me working for a while today as well. It takes time to process, label, and write about what happened on the railroad. (Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but it could have been awful.)

So Instead, Here's a Sign )

I ended up missing yet another one of their signs, too, because one I wanted to photograph today has been replaced with a congratulatory message for Fernley High School graduating seniors.

Laughter is Essential, Right? )

It's hard to believe, but one week ago it was still (barely) chilly enough to need a fire in the fireplace, which I used to dispose of old records no longer needed. For the past few days, it has been warm enough to keep the windows open and start the fans running to cool things off. I've also started wearing my "summer uniform" of khaki-colored clothes. We got our walking in by going to the post office, where there was a package waiting. While not everyone was wearing masks, there seemed to be more understanding of why we were ducking and weaving to keep our distance from people.

Fire Call

This month I was actually able to make it to the monthly meeting of the North Lyon County Fire Protection District. The meeting was mostly taken up with adopting a new strategic and organizational plan, but they also needed to decide what to do about a worn-out fire truck. In the middle of the meeting, they took a recess so that everyone could go take a look at it.

Fighting Sixty-Two )

Although the laid-up engine does have some level of sentimental value, the consensus was that at most the district would need to spend at least a five-figure sum simply to get it running again, and even then it probably could only be used as a "parade" engine. Therefore, they voted to start the process of de-acquiring it and to accelerate the acquisition of a new engine.

At the end of the meeting, the Chair of the Board asked if there was any public comment, and hearing none, said, "What about you, Mr. Standlee? You've been awfully quiet."

I said, "Well, to be honest, my mind isn't totally here right now, as my wife and I are flying to Ireland on Monday for three weeks," which got both laughs and jealous comments.

I will try to stay in touch with fire district affairs, but I don't think I'll have the energy to run for the board again next year, even with three seats open, on account of Westercon 74 in Tonopah. That's going to take a lot of my spare brain cycles for the next couple of years.

I went to the North Lyon County Fire Protection District board meeting tonight. Unlike some past meetings that have been long and contentious, tonight plowed through a long agenda but had relatively little discussion or debate, and a lot of stuff got approved pretty quickly. I did not stick around waiting for the closed session on labor negotiations, but from the informal discussion I heard, even that didn't seem too controversial.

It rains very little in Fernley. Nearby Fallon has as part of the reason there is a Naval Air Station there is having 360 days of clear flying weather per year. But this winter is wet, and we might get something like 20% of our annual rainfall over yesterday and today. Thus any plans Lisa and I might have had for a Valentine's Day getaway are washed away. The most excitement I'll have it attending the Fire Board meeting tonight, where I will thank them for the condolence card they sent me regarding my mother's death, which I learned about by a telephone call during last month's meeting.

This evening's North Lyon County Fire Protection District meeting was well-attended (especially considering that the Board often cancels its December meeting). It turned out to be pretty short, too. At the start of the meeting, the Board read out a letter from Chief Huntley announcing that he was leaving the department as of 17:00 hours today (one hour before the meeting, and he wasn't present at the meeting). The Board also read a statement announcing Huntley's departure, and declaring that all matters having to do with an investigation of his management of the department were to be sealed. And that's all they have to say on the matter, as part of a settlement between the district and now former Chief Huntley.

Thud.

After that, the rest of the meeting was rather anti-climactic. One other substantive item (a temporary short-term loan of one of the district's fire engines to neighboring Mineral County while they work on repairing/replacing the one engine they had down in Mina) passed, and they scheduled a meeting for next Thursday where they will tackle the practical matters of keeping the department running while they search for a new Chief.

I'm sad, but not terribly surprised, by Chief Huntley's departure. Lisa and I thought he was a good Chief, interested in not just fire suppression, but fire prevention. But he appears to have made enemies, and when I saw where things were heading, I did tell him that if he had a better offer that he should take it. I hope he finds a new position that can use his considerable talents.
