Printer for Westercon
May. 14th, 2022 10:45 amTonopah is sufficiently far away from big cities that we will need to be pretty self-sufficient. That includes needing our own medium-duty printer and copier. There's no FedEx Office down the street where we can go do copying on the fly. While some areas will be bringing their own gear, Registration needs a printer, and we'll have various copying needs. After taking stock of our printing and copying needs pre- and at-con, I decided to buy a larger-capacity machine that we strictly might not need for some of the smaller functions.
Annoyingly, due to supply chain issues, none of the retail stores in Reno that we tried (Staples, Best Buy) had the kind of printer we needed available for purchase. Some had printers on display, but they were only non-working display models. We were facing a situation where if we wanted to buy retail, we could either get something that was too light-duty and small or was much too commercial and expensive (>$1000). However, thanks to looking over the display models, we got an idea about what would work and did some hunting online. Staples offered (online only for delivery to home, not via a retail store) a machine that worked. The site said that if we ordered by Wednesday, it would be at our house by Friday. That seemed optimistic, but we decided to bite the bullet.
( In and Out of the Box )
We've identified a lot of pre-convention printing needs where commercial printing is more expensive than printing it ourselves. If we were a larger convention, it might be more worthwhile, but with our small size (under 400 members, probably), we'll trade time for money and do more things ourselves.
