Grumble

Good news: I could indeed connect my computer to the TV in the room, as it has an S-Video port.

More good news: Lisa said it was okay for me to watch the Super 14 Rugby final.

Bad news: At the 51st minute, the playback stopped. Apparently the download this afternoon was corrupted without it having said so, and only included the first 51 minutes of the match. (For the benefit of those who don't know -- rugby is played in two halves of 40 minutes each, to the game stalled eleven minutes into the second half.)

I'll have to do a fresh download when I get back to a more dependable internet connection at Lisa's father's house on Monday in order to watch the rest of the game.

Rugby Bear

Speaking of rugby: last weekend, I downloaded some other matches, and Lisa suggested that I watch one in the evening back "home" in the trailer. I don't need an internet connection for that as long as I first launch the video while connected to the internet so I can establish rights to the file. Anyway, as I was watching a game last week, she decided that Kuma Bear was interested in rugby, too.

Lisa isn't terribly interested in sports, but she says that Kuma is.

I'm sufficiently caught up that I have no more reasons not to get moving and take my CPAP machine down to San Jose before heading to the office.

I will collect Cheryl, who is somewhere in the air over Greenland right now, at SFO this evening.

Oh, and I'm finally caught up on the rugby matches again, having watched the South Africa - Argentina match. Finals this weekend, but once again I'll have to wait 24 hours before I can download the matches, which means staying away from all sources of international sports news.

It's very busy here at PDX this evening, where my flight to Oakland is delayed 45 minutes but not oversold. The former meant that I had time to go have a relatively leisurely dinner after checking in, but it also means that I won't be able to take the Capitol train home because I won't connect to it. Instead, I'll have to take BART and a taxi home from there. Oh, well, such is the way of travel.

Unfortunately, I didn't have an opportunity yet to download either of the Rugby World Cup semi-final matches, so I don't have a match to watch on the flight tonight. (I tried setting up a download while I was eating dinner, but it said that it would take about three hours.) I do have a match from the New Zealand national league, though, and Cheryl says it's a good one, so all is not lost. And I loaded the half-battery into the CD-ROM bay, so there's no chance of running out of power partway through. (But it isn't a very long flight anyway.)

I've always thought that PDX was a nice airport, especially since the Concourse B/C renovation was finished. It appears that other travelers thing so as well, as Conde Nast Traveler awarded PDX Airport of the Year status for 2006.

Update, 18:40: Good thing there's more than one way to get home from OAK. We're still stuck here waiting to go. The delayed inbound equipment was first announced as "needing additional servicing," followed by "we have swapped equipment; the new plane will be here shortly," to the new equipment taking a lot longer to get ready than expected. As I write this, they're saying, "Ten more minutes," but they've been saying things like that for the last half hour or so. At least PDX is a comfortable place to wait.

I finally managed to work my way through the last of the four Rugby World Cup games stored up on my computer. I had a bit of setback last night when the Scotland-Argentina game stopped at about 65 minutes into the match. I guess the download was corrupted, so I set another download to running overnight -- it took almost as long to download it as the match took to play originally -- and watched the last fifteen minutes today. I see what folks were saying about how good those four games were! They were definitely worth the money for the subscription. It's finding the eight hours to watch them that was tricky.

For those of you on my f-list who are following the Rugby World Cup, thank you for posting your comments behind cuts. I can't see the matches until, at the earliest, the day after they happen due to the licensing agreement with MediaZone, and in fact it will probably be later than that given when I'll have the time to watch the knockout-stage matches.

Just out of curiosity, I punched up MediaZone Rugby and tried live-streaming the Wellington - Tasman match that happens to be running right now. Somewhat to my surprise, not only did the match come up, but it played without any skips, hesitation, or dropouts. I've been at first-rate hotels that cannot manage that with their internet service.

I'm going up to Oregon for the weekend and will be out of e-mail contact from about 3 PM Friday through late Sunday evening. Originally I wasn't even going to take my computer, but I came up with an idea that means I'll have to take the machine with me. I have a subscription to MediaZone that includes the Super 14 matches, a couple of which will air tonight my time and thus be available for download tomorrow morning. I can download a match, launch it briefly (you have to do this while connected to the internet in order to establish rights to view it), then set it aside. Then, at the airports and on planes (space available), I can watch the matches.

Although I'm very busy with the project I have here at work, it's not yet so critical that I'll need to fire up the computer for the relatively short time I'm in Oregon this weekend, but I'll use it for entertainment coming and going.

There's no way I can watch all of the S14 matches (and I probably wouldn't want to do so even if I had the time), but I do hate paying for the subscription and not getting some use out of it.

(No, there are no US teams in Super 14. That's just the only rugby-related icon I have.)

After figuring out where the rugby stadium was, I was able to secure a seat in the second row of the stands on the 10-meter line, which gave me a great close-up view of certain parts of the game; unfortunately for all of us in the stands, it seems like both teams choose to concentrate most of their play on the far side of the field in both halves.

The outcome of the game was never really in doubt. USA defeated Uruguay 33-7 to earn a space in next year's Rugby World Cup. Uruguay were outmatched. Even during a period when two USA players were sent to the sin bin for ten minutes, Uruguay were unable to score and in fact conceded points to the USA during the period when they were playing 15-on-13.

I noticed that Brian Vizard, who used to co-anchor the Fox Sports World rugby coverage, was doing what looked to be play-by-play above the stand where I was sitting. After the game, I went to the top row of the stands, where a tall person like me could look over the bar and catch his attention after he finished with the commentary. I told him how much I'd enjoyed his work with Fox, particularly the "Laws of the Game" segments that helped me learn the rules of rugby, and how disappointed I was when Fox gave up on everything except soccer. He thanked me and shook my hand. I unfortunately had nothing handy for autographing, or I would have asked for one.

I estimate at least a thousand people attended, some of whom were in the stands, but many of whom ringed the field, which is surrounded by only a waist-high fence. There were, unfortunately, no food concessions, so I was very hungry by the time the game ended. I went off and found food right away before returning to Silicon.

I spent most of the evening hanging out in the [livejournal.com profile] basfa party, which seemed to me to keep a decent amount of traffic and conversations going on, and that's good, given that we are down at the end of the hall like that. I have no desire to offend someone by leaving them out, but to me the standout conversation of the night was one I had with [livejournal.com profile] karisu_sama about The Late Unpleasantness. (If you don't know what it is, trust me, you're probably better off not knowing.)

About 11:30 PM, I realized that I was having some difficulty keeping focus. This is surprising, given the artificially time-shifted schedule I'm keeping, on which it shouldn't be much later than 6:30 PM by my body clock. However, as I'm commuting from Fremont, twenty or so miles away, I figured that it was prudent to head home sooner rather than later, as I would be unlikely to be more alert if I stuck around.

Cheryl pointed out that the USA Rugby team is playing for a spot in the Rugby World Cup against Uruguay on Saturday at 2 PM at Stanford. I've decided that I'll go ahead and go to the game, so I won't be at Silicon on Saturday until probably after 5 PM or so, depending on how long it takes to get down to San Jose after the match. I have no commitments to Silicon -- I'm not a program participant, and there aren't a lot of things on the schedule that interest me personally, so I'll probably just hang out again during the evening. The [livejournal.com profile] basfa or [livejournal.com profile] loeg parties are good places to look for me.

While sitting here at home working (to the extent that they're feeding me any work to do), I used the other laptop to download the NZ Maori-Ireland match that I attended last weekend with [livejournal.com profile] dave_gallaher. (I can't access MediaZone through the company network -- it's blocked -- and while I'm using my personal laptop, it's logged into the company network via VPN.) I'm now watching the match from a different perspective.

Of course, since I know exactly where I was sitting, I also had an eye out to see if I could spot myself in the stands. Right after the first Maori try, at 10:44 in the match and 21:26 into the MediaZone downloaded file, they briefly pan the stands, and I saw me and Dave in the middle of the shot. My head is turned away from the camera, and Dave is blocked by the person in front of him, but I'm pretty sure it's us.

Update, 22:15: Initially I wrote here that I couldn't grab a frame to show here, but one of the comments below, I was able to make the necesssary change to be able to do so.

Our moment in the sun )

Saturday afternoon, David Gallaher and I arrived early for the Ireland A-New Zealand Maori match in Santa Clara. There was a line of cars queued up to pay $5 to get into the parking garage. I told Dave to turn right instead of left and we parked for $1.50 in the Caltrain parking lot. Few people seemed to notice this option was available.

My impressions of the match )

In the end, Ireland were unable to score any more points than the US had against the Maori, but were not destroyed by NZ the way the USA Eagles were. Final score was New Zealand Maori 27, Ireland A 6. (Link is to a news story about the match from American Rugby News.)

We had an opportunity for a bonus match, as the American semi-professional Rugby Super League played their championship game right after the Ireland-NZ match; unfortunately, Dave needed to get back to Fremont to help [livejournal.com profile] dinogrl tear down her classroom. From what I read, the RSL final was a much closer affair, with OMBAC scoring the winning try in injury time to defeat Belmont Shore, 36-33.

I'm glad that I was able to attend all three of the Churchill Cup games in the newly-expanded format. In previous years, only four teams played in the Churchill Cup, and all of the games were played in Canada. This year they expanded to six teams and played two sets of pools, one in the USA, before the final round in Edmonton. NZ Maori will play Scotland A for the Churchill Cup, while England and Ireland will play for the Plate and, as expected, USA and Canada, coming last in their respective pools, will contest for the Bowl.

Despite the home sides being dominated by the visitors, I'm glad to see the International Rugby Board and the sponsors of the Churchill Cup including the English Rugby Football Union taking an interest in developing rugby in North America. The only way the US and Canadian sides will improve is by playing better sides like this. I heard an announcement at the game that the same six sides will contest again next year. I'd be surprised if they come back to Santa Clara, only because I'd expect them to play somewhere else to give another city a chance to see the matches, but if they do come back to the Bay Area, I expect I'll make an effort to see the matches.

There will be more international rugby at Buck Shaw Stadium in a few weeks as the USA takes on Barbados in a Rugby World Cup qualifying match; unfortunately, it will be on July 1, and I'll be a bit busy in San Diego at the time.

For about thirty seconds, the USA Eagles led the New Zealand Maori, 3-0, just after the start of the Barclay's Churchill Cup match this evening in Santa Clara. then the Maori went to town on the Eagles and began to score tries seemingly at will. The USA got one more penalty goal (and several misses from 40-plus meters out) and came within half a meter of one try, but were otherwise not much of a factor. The final score was 74-6.

NZ will play Ireland on Saturday at 2 PM at what promises to be the best of the three US pool matches. The announcer said they are predicting a sellout. (Tonight's attendance was about 3,600, which was a significant proportion of Buck Shaw Stadium. I expect the place might hold 5,000 in a pinch.) So Dave Gallaher and I had better get there early so we can get tickets.

All six teams in the tournament will go on to Edmonton for the second round, with the winners of each pool playing for the Churchill Cup, the 2nd place teams contesting for the Plate, and the 3rd place teams (probably the USA and Canada; however, if Canada upset England Saxons on Saturday, the USA will play England) playing the consolation match for the Bowl.

In the Canada pool, Scotland A squeezed out a win against Canada by a score of 15-10 and will play the winner of the NZ-Ireland A match for the Cup.

Update, Thursday 08:00: Corrected the score, put in a link to a story about the rout, and listed the results of the other pool match.

I know that the USA rugby team is outmatched by the Irish and NZ teams, even when they are sending their "A" sides (what Americans would probably call the "B" team, since they are secondary squads). Still, I feared that we'd be blown out by Ireland. Instead, the Eagles did better than I thought they would, and even led for a few minutes when they got the first score three minutes into the match with a penalty goal. Still, Ireland are a better team, and they won, 28-13.

My day in the sun )

It was very warm and sunny today, with no cloud at all. I was slathered in sunscreen. I hope it worked. Cheryl, who was also watching the other pool match being played in the rain in Toronto, said that today's game was a great advertisement for California tourism.

I'm looking forward to the next two matches.

The Barclay's Churchill Cup international rugby competition starts in Santa Clara on Saturday, as the Bay Area plays host to one of the two pools of this international rugby tournament. The Churchill Cup is an international rugby tournament jointly organized by the USA, Canada, and England. (Note that I do mean "England," not "Great Britain" or some other combination. England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland -- the last being a unified team, north and south -- field separate national rugby squads.) They have invited three other countries to this year's tournament, and split the six teams into two pools. The "San Francisco" pool, which will be played at Buck Shaw Stadium at Santa Clara University, consists of the USA, Ireland A, and the New Zealand Maori. The other pool is (Canada, England 'Saxons', and Scotland) playing in Ottawa and Toronto. The results of pool play will seed the six teams for the final round in Edmonton.

I hope to attend all three matches being played here, because it's rare to get a chance to see world-class rugby around here. Even though the non-North American unions are more or less bringing along their secondary or developmental sides, it still should be a good series of matches.

Saturday, June 3rd - 2:00PM
United States vs. Ireland A

Wednesday, June 7th - 7:30 PM
United States vs. New Zealand Maori

Saturday, June 10th - 2:00 PM
New Zealand Maori vs. Ireland A

Afterthought, 10:20 AM: This presumably means that before the matches including Ireland A they will play Ireland's Call, which is a wonderful anthem. And the matches with New Zealand Maori will mean we get to see the Haka. Yay!

I have a subscription to MediaZone's rugby package, purchased after Fox Sports World changed their name to Fox Soccer Channel and dropped everything except soccer from their schedule. Before going to bed last night, I took advantage of having broadband by starting the download of the four Super 14 matches that had been played so far. Sure, it takes hours to download those huge files, but I was asleep while it was happening. (Except for the mystery phone call at 5 AM, grumble.) I then pulled down the other two matches this morning.

I probably won't have time to watch all six matches, but now I can select them without having to concern myself with the 60-to-90-minute download time before watching one.
