kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
As far as I can tell, the BASFA 1000 meeting was effectively the SiliCon Dead Dog Party. Lisa and I did not stick around long after the meeting, because it was after 9 PM and we wanted to get dinner. Fortunately, Chipotle is open until 10 PM, so we popped down for a couple of burritos and took them back to the hotel room. After filling up on burritos, we did some more packing and took some things out to our vehicles to try and be more ready for tomorrow's move-out. I have the tricky task of figuring out what stuff to put in in my Chicago bag. Since I'm flying to Chicago tomorrow mid-day, I had to pack for that portion of the trip already, but some stuff I had with me at SiliCon has to go in the "Chicago bag." Fortunately, my flight is mid-day, not first thing, so it won't be a complete panic tomorrow.

We headed back down to the Fan Table area so as to use the free wi-fi to upload photos of BASFA's Meeting 1000; however, as I compose this the hotel house-men are tearing down the tables, so I need to wrap this up soon and get out of here. I'm not sure exactly when I'll be back online on Monday, although I should try to get online in the morning to see if there have been new updates from work.
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
As is often the case, there was some technical worries over this morning's setup for Match Game SF. It turns out to have been very useful for Lisa to have brought her new speakers and the full scale tech kit. Kudos to her for being able to get things running when the primary tech had problems getting their equipment back online from last night. It was also very lucky that the panel scheduled for the ballroom at 10 AM was canceled, because we needed that extra hour of set-up time to get everything in place for our Noon start time.

Everything came together in the end, and we had a great show this afternoon.
Photos behind the cut )

Thank you so much to everyone who worked so hard to make the show happen. We may have had about thirty people in the audience, but given the relatively anemic attendance here at SiliCon, that's not too bad. And for a change, we gave away quite a few of our bonus-round prizes, with three of our six finalists hitting the Super Match for prizes including a membership to Westercon 64 and a copy of The Turtle Moves donated by the North American Discworld Convention. I hope David W. Clark didn't die of shock when someone actually came to him to redeem one of the $20 Cargo Cult gift certificates that have been sitting in the prize bin for several years now without having been won.

We did a full six games (three games, a break, then three more games). I think that's only the second or third time we've ever done six, and I'd forgotten how exhausting it can be to do that many. I don't notice it while I'm doing the show, but after we're packed out of the room, the reaction starts to set in. I can see why the star might need a dressing room in which to decompress after the show. In my case, being the executive producer as well, I don't have quite that much flexibility -- besides, we had to go get lunch! While I'd had a full breakfast, Lisa had only had a croissant to eat all day.

After eating, we came back to the hotel and brought my computer down to sit across from the Westercon 64 table while I helped [livejournal.com profile] travelswithkuma with his photos and uploaded photos from the Westercon 64 party last night.

Now we have a little break for a couple of hours before the 1000th of meeting of BASFA, which will be this evening in the Doubletree Hotel's "Quiet Bar," that being where BASFA started nearly twenty years ago. Then we'll need to pack up most of our stuff and I'll need to repack for tomorrow, as I must get out of here in the morning and fly to Chicago for the week for a business meeting.
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
Having eight solid hours of sleep helped me feel much better this morning. I'm heading off to breakfast soon, leaving Lisa to sleep in as much as she can. (She was seriously bedeviled by her tinnitus last night, and slept poorly.) Later this morning I will borrow a bell cart and we'll move the Match Game kit over to the Ballroom and (I hope) get some of the setup done relatively quietly during the preceding panel event. I think it unlikely that I'll be back online until late today.
kevin_standlee: (Kreegah Bundalo)
Around 10:30 on Saturday night I started feeling unwell. I excused myself from the Westercon 64 party early -- Lisa and I had helped with the party setup after closing the table while Chairman Glenn Glazer went shopping for party supplies -- and turned in early. I really cannot afford to be sick.
kevin_standlee: Kevin after losing a lot of weight. He peaked at 330, but over the following years got it down to 220 and continues to lose weight. (Default)
Lisa made it down to San Jose faster than we originally expected, so she was actually at the hotel by the time I arrived. We moved all of our stuff into our hotel room -- it took three trips with the bell cart, and we'll need to get the cart again when moving in to do Match Game SF. I do hope we're able to find a way to make everything work. I still haven't heard that we'll have all of the various tables and chairs for the stage setup. While it's nice to have the main stage, in some respects it's almost too large for what we're going; however, we'll to the best we can.

After waiting more than half an hour for Opening Ceremonies to start -- a difficulty locating the Guests of Honor, I understand -- I decided that I couldn't want for dinner any longer, and Lisa and I went to have dinner at the Hawaiian Drive-In down the street. Alas for the Loco Moco -- even the small portion led to a 190 blood sugar an hour later, so we went out for a bonus walk. There are more restaurants around here than I thought there were, if one is willing to walk a few extra blocks.

Returning to the hotel, we went up to the party floor, where things were fairly quiet. Friday night at SiliCon appears to be extremely lightly attended. But a fair number of the people who are here were in the Fanzine Lounge, it appears. The Lounge had been relocated to the Boardroom, right in the middle of the Party Zone, and it suits them.

In-room internet is expensive, but there is free internet out in the public areas, so I took my laptop to the Fan Tables and set up to get my mail and post this message. But I'm feeling far more tired than I thought I would be, so I think I'll probably turn in early. I don't have to be up early on Saturday -- Sunday is my busy day -- although I'll need to put in time behind the Westercon table. But then again, what sort of convention would it be without me sitting behind a table hawking memberships to something?
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
Sara Bruce has agreed to join our panel of "ding-a-lings" on Match Game SF at SiliCon, along with Glenn Glazer, who joins our "returning regulars" Kevin Roche, Andy Trembley, Chris Garcia, and Leigh Ann Hildebrand on Sunday at Noon in the Siskiyou/Donner Pass Ballroom. I hope we'll see lots of people there trying to fill in the ____s.
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
I printed the questions for our Match Game SF show at SiliCon. Thank you to everyone who contributed questions. We'll need more, because plans call for a show at Westercon next July as well. (For Norwescon, we'll probably re-use much of the SiliCon material.) Tomorrow, I hope to finish the commercials and print them along with the intro, prize package inserts, gift certificates, and closing title information. It's all of these fiddly bits that make my life complicated and that can't

700 miles north, preparations at Tsuki Systems are underway to get all of the gear packed before Lisa and Kuma head south for an arrival sometime on Friday. Lisa has new equipment that she was testing and configuring. [livejournal.com profile] travelswithkuma has details and pictures.
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
Remember that we're scheduled to do Match Game SF at SiliCon 2009 on Sunday, October 4, from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM in the Siskiyou/Donner Pass Ballroom. That's actually a bit too long, although it allows us time to get set up and torn down. I don't think we'll fill all three-plus hours. With that much leeway, and with a panel in the room before us, I've proposed starting the first game at Noon. My normal insistence on a prompt start is due to us being time-constrained, which we do not appear to be this year. I'm planning on bringing enough material for five games, with a sixth -- probably "rerun" using older material -- in reserve. And we'll almost certainly take a ten-minute break after game 3 because everyone needs a bathroom break.

Lisa just called to tell me that she's bought new speakers and that we really don't need any of the convention's tech gear. I hope this doesn't lead to a collision between tech teams.

I can still use more questions, and a production assistant volunteer or two would be very helpful. Write to me at my LJ handle @livejournal.com and the message will get to me. Thanks!
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
I just got my program plans for SiliCon 2009, and now can confirm that we'll be staging Match Game SF on Sunday in the main Ballroom. I think the start time is intended to be 11:30 AM, but I don't know just yet if that means we're doing setup in the block before that or not.

Once again, here's a call for new questions for the show. MG questions are fill-in-the-blank questions, but not trivia questions. There should be multiple possible answers. Typical question: "The Starfleet Admiral said, 'Captain Kirk has the biggest ___ in Starfleet!'"

Email me questions -- don't post them as comments here or else everyone will see them -- at kevin_standlee@livejournal.com if you don't already have my address.
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
We had another good Match Game SF show this afternoon.

Photo Story beyond the cut )

And then we were done, to the applause of dozens -- but given how few people attended SiliCon and that this was the last tranche of programming of the convention before the wrap-up panel, I think we had a significant percentage of the people still at the convention attending. The Tech Team started striking their gear, and the Match Game crew struck the game set.

More show thoughts, thank yous, and what happened after )

And now I think I'm done and need to get some rest.

Ready to Go

kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
After getting breakfast in the VIP lounge upstairs (thank you again, [livejournal.com profile] lisa_marli!), I moved all of the Match Game SF gear down to the SJ2011 bid table for temporary storage, then went back to the room, changed into my costume business suit, and packed my personal luggage out to the van. This gave me a little bit of time to sit here at the empty table next to SJ2011's table and check my e-mail before I move over to the Donner Pass/Siskiyou Ballroom so that I'm ready to move on set-up for the show as soon as the Tech Team are ready for me. I have the usual pre-show jitters, but I expect they will fade when we're actually "on the air." Setting up the show always makes me nervous; it's the waiting that's difficult.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Captain 2)
Not having any early-morning commitments today, I didn't have to rush through breakfast. I had breakfast with Raven O'Neill ([livejournal.com profile] lisa_marli let Raven, whose expected roommates had flaked out, use the other bed in the room of which I'm renting a share), then changed into my WSFS captain's outfit. (I'm glad I didn't try to eat breakfast in the uniform -- I spilled coffee on my shirt at breakfast.)

SiliCon is pretty lightly attended, but we've had a steady stream of traffic here at the SJ 2011 Westercon bid table, so I haven't had a huge amount of time to be paying attention to the computer.

I expect to spend most of today doing table duty here at the Westercon table, because I will have no time tomorrow on account of Match Game SF.

I printed more bid stickers for the bid a couple of nights ago. As our existing stock was on the last sheet, Glenn Glazer looked at the labels I brought. He couldn't peel off a sticker. Upon closer examination, it became clear that I'd fed the label stock into the printer wrong-side up. *heasmack* I might have access to a color printer here in the Fanzine Lounge.

SiliCon Ho

kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
Hooray for free wireless internet in the hotel's public areas! I'm settled in at the San Jose in 2011 Westercon bid table, for whom I brought the front-of-table banner and bid stickers. Bid Chairman Glenn Glazer is off posting party flyers; when he comes back, I'll go around and start posting promotional flyers for Match Game SF.

The old Coffee Garden restaurant, which is where many of us Doubltree con-goers have spent many happy hours, has morphed into a new restaurant called "Sprigs," and is only open from 6 AM to 2 PM, even during events like this that should throw off business. Instead, we're told we should got to the fancy, expensive restaurant or eat in the bar. This is something we'll have to address with the Westercon bid, I think.

Somewhat to my surprise, given how few people are here during the early-afternoon set-up hours, we've already sold a couple of pre-supporting memberships to the Westercon bid.

All Clear

kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
Fortunately for me, when I had a look inside the Big Box o' Stuff for Match Game SF, I found a small supply of blank A/B cards -- overruns from a previous show. There were enough for me to print the questions for our show at SiliCon. I'm planning to do four games in two hours, and we have material (some re-runs) for two more if we under-run, but that's rare. What's more likely is that if we end up having multiple tie games like we did at Worldcon, we'll only get three games in before we hit our hard stop at 3:50 to allow turnover for the Feedback session.

Again, anyone who wants to come help with setup is encouraged to come by the Siskiyou/Donner Pass Ballroom from 1 PM onward on Sunday.

I expect to be heading down to the Doubletree pretty soon. I don't know what my internet connectivity will be, although even if it's pay-to-play, I'll probably need to spring for it at least for today, for I'm effectively on call until late this afternoon.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
It was a good thing that Lisa called me yesterday to tell me that she wasn't coming and that I should cancel the hotel room, because the room had a 72-hour cancellation clause on it, so I just barely made it. And on the positive side, [livejournal.com profile] lisa_marli has agreed to let me buy a share of her underutilized hotel room so that I can sleep at the Doubletree instead of having to make a 40-mile round-trip between the hotel and the Doubletree each day. That's particularly nice for Sunday when I do Match Game SF.

It's going to be an interesting technical challenge to do the show, as we won't have Lisa running the sound, and she knows exactly how the music cues are supposed to work. It's unrealistic of me to expect everyone to have seen a 1970s game show, even one that is rerun as much as Match Game. Ah, well, one of the charms of live shows is seeing how things work, I guess.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
Lisa called this afternoon. Her tinnitus is so bad that she said she can't come to Silicon because she can't sleep and the noise is driving her mad. I have an appointment to take her for an MRI on October 13, after I drive up there the previous weekend. At this point, I hope they do find something amiss so that there's some hope of treatment.

Anyway, as Lisa is not coming, she won't be able to use her membership. Anyone need a membership to Silicon?

Update, 22:00: The membership is spoken for, assuming Silicon's Registration people can take my word on it -- there's no way I can get anything in writing from Lisa in time, and she doesn't do e-mail. But I'm the person who bought the membership in the first place, and I think Silicon's management knows me.
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
We have a new Match Game SF show scheduled for SiliCon on Sunday, October 3, 2-4 PM in Siskyou/Donner Pass Ballroom -- the "main event" space, so I hope we have a good turnout.

Once again, I'm looking for contributions of SF/F-themed questions for the show. Yes, we have lots of questions in storage, but most of our panelists have heard them at least once, and while the audience may not have heard them before, it's hard on the panelists to keep giving them the same material over and over again. (If I do a show with a completely fresh group of panelists, I'm likely to mine the old material.)

Match Game questions are fill-in-the-blank questions where there multiple good answers to fill the blank, usually with plenty of double entendres. Example:
The Starfleet admiral said, "Captain Kirk has the biggest ____ in Starfleet!"
Notice that there is no "right" answer here. Match Game isn't a trivia contest. The object is for the contestant to figure out how the panelists answered the question.

Here's an example of a bad MG question and a good one based on the same material:
Bad: Einstein said, "God does not play ___ with the universe."

Good: Einstein said, "God does not play dice with the universe; however, he does play ___ with it."
You can e-mail me your questions at my LJ handle @ LiveJournal.com. If we use your question in the show, you'll get credit in the show closing titles, and one of our Lovely Parting Gifts (suitable for wearing on membership badges).
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
I went down to the Doubletree Hotel in San Jose this afternoon for the SiliCon staff meeting so I could meet briefly with the head of programming and the hotel liaison to review the set-up we'd prefer to do Match Game SF at SiliCon. The current plan is for us to be the final program item before the "Hiss & Purr" session on Sunday, with a run time from 2 to 4 PM. That means that in practice we have until 1:45 at the latest, and based on our usual run time per game, the most we could conceivably fit into that time is five games, and four -- or even three if we go into tie breakers -- is possible.

They are putting us in the primary programming space -- the same room as the Masquerade and other "big tech" items. That's good and bad. The good is that it has a stage and therefore we should be able to do the staggered-tier seating for the panelist. It's good because we'll have the mainstage tech available. It's bad because it's likely that the convention tech team will want to run the tech, and that's likely to going to cause Lisa to not want to do anything at all. She can do a very good job on the tech if people get out of her way. What's not easy is bringing people up to speed on exactly what we want to do with no rehearsal or set-up time.

Remember that I fret a lot over set-up, and that the shows normally go pretty well. As the show's executive producer, my job is to worry. As the host, my job is to smile and make everyone else look good on the day.

The SiliCon folks were kind enough to let me get my business done early, so I could go ahead and leave less than an hour after I arrived, which meant I only had to pay for an hour's parking.
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
I've been so busy moving cubicles and trying to rebuild my laptop's hard drive that I forgot to mention that I've been invited to do Match Game SF on the Sunday (October 5) afternoon of SiliCon.

[livejournal.com profile] kproche and [livejournal.com profile] bovil are on the panelist list already on the panelist list because I caught them before they left BASFA on Monday. I will be asking our other regular panelists shortly whether they are attending and if they want to be panelists.

More details when I know about them.
kevin_standlee: (Match Game SF)
I do still need more questions for Match Game SF, for we're doing a show at Worldcon and now possibly at SiliCon. Yes, it's possible to re-use questions -- and I do so -- because the audiences often haven't seen them before, but it's better for the panelists if the questions are fresh. Fortunately, we can re-use questions without creating game show scandals, because of the nature of Match Game. I just want to keep recycling down to a minimum except when we have a mostly-new panel and audience, as we did at Norwescon earlier this year.

You can e-mail me your questions -- if you don't already have my e-mail address, use my LJ handle @LiveJournal.com. Posting them as comments means other people end up seeing them; whether you want to do that is up to you.
