We had a non-rainy day today, and I was able to free up enough of my afternoon that Lisa and I could get out and cut trees and clear brush.

Tree Tales )

It's good to get these branches cut, but hauling the wood is a hassle. We may need to look into renting a wood chipper sometime in order to reduce these many piles of wood debris to more manageable form.

I slept clear until noon on Sunday, trying to recover from the long hours I've been putting in on the Day Jobbe. However, there were chores to do and the weather was just about perfect, so after a big brunch that Lisa cooked up, we broke out the electric chainsaw and other implements of destruction and went to work cutting up the tree that we removed from That Darn Roof on my last trip north. We spent several hours sawing the tree into burnable-size pieces, hauling them to the woodshed, and then trying to clear away some of the small bush from the area. We hauled one cart-load of small brush to the "coal seam." It's looking much better over by the side of the old house, and while there is still lots of work to do around here -- it never ends, really -- we did feel like we had accomplished something. Lisa tells me that getting all of the brush cleared out of there means we may be able to get the awning over the side of the house finally repaired completely sometime this spring.

I wasn't displeased at spending a day outside carrying wood and brush, although I have to always be careful of my back since I injured it a few months ago. After all of the time I've spent hunched over computers, working outdoors in decent weather is a good thing, and I needed the exercise.

Tomorrow I'm off to Fort Worth for the week. Fortunately, my flight is not until noon, so I din't have to be up any earlier than a normal work day for us to drive up to PDX and deposit me on a flight to DFW.

The rain relented sufficiently for us to take another crack at the tree on the roof of the old house. Lisa disassembled the portion of the awning in the line of fire so that the falling tree wouldn't smash the PVC pipe frame, and we got to work.

Lisa borrowed from her cousin a cable saw -- that's a length of chainsaw cutting chain with ropes on each end of it -- and we undertook to try and cut the tree closer to its base. We cleared away much of the brush and small branches near the base of the tree, Lisa cut it part-way through with the hand saw, and threaded the cable saw into the cut. We then played out the rope and tugged alternately on the ends. This allowed us to safely saw the tree without being anywhere near it.

The Tale of the Tree, with pictures )

I'm really relieved to get that tree off of the roof. Perhaps on my next trip north we'll be able to get the debris completely cleared away and the wood cut and put away for next year. We have been cutting the wood we cut last year this winter, so stuff isn't going to waste, but we haven't had time to do the really time-consuming work of splitting the maple tree that they cut down last year into manageable pieces. Alas, the tree pieces have been sitting in the field gathering moss and mushrooms ever since last spring.

I still haven't processed the photographs, so you can't yet see what the tree looked like before the workers arrived, but I have uploaded the video I shot of the coup de grace of the workers falling the maple tree on Lisa's father's property:

After that, with the tree's branches chopped and chipped, the workers dumped the resultant debris into the "coal seam" disposal site on the property.

I have lots of photos and video from yesterday, but work is too busy for me to process and post them, which is unfortunate because I'm very pleased with it. I hope to get to it eventually. But here's a relatively brief update on things.

Photos and video someday when I have time. Meanwhile, I must get back to designing large-scale distribution models for a potential huge client. I'm worried because Lisa and I are supposed to go to Seaside this weekend for the Sea-Pac radio show, but I may end up having to spend the whole weekend in the hotel room on the computer working on this project.
