If you're driving from California's Central Valley or the Bay Area to Reno for Worldcon and haven't been up that way lately, be warned that there is ongoing significant construction work on I-80. In particular, between Emigrant Gap and Cisco Grove westbound eastbound traffic is limited to one narrow lane and is subject to significant delays. Also, the Donner Summit rest areas are closed, so plan your rest stops accordingly.

Be patient and give yourself extra time to get over the hill to Reno.

Update, 2200: Corrected direction. It's traffic from Sacramento and the Bay Area toward Reno that is affected.

The 80/395 interchange is still a mess as well, isn't it? Granted, that can be avoided by getting off 80 at Virginia and surface-streeting the rest of the way.

(Of course, in the 8 years I've been going to Burning Man, I can't recall a year there WASN'T some sort of construction going on through that section....)

That is correct. I-80 through Reno itself is a mess. We got caught in it a couple of times before realizing that if already in downtown Reno, it's better to take 4th St (old US 40) over to Sparks rather than get onto the freeway.

Sounds like our decision to use US-395 rather than I-5 as our main north-south leg was the correct one.

But I'll have to look into reports on the 80/395 mess in Reno (or hope that my GPS will detect the traffic and suggest an alternative if needed).

Of course since we have to start the ~10 hour drive AFTER we get done registering The Kid for 8th grade, it might not matter too much about traffic.

I agree there, too. If I were coming from San Diego, I certainly would take the "inside gateway" through Bishop. (I lived in Bishop for two years; my first two years of high school, back in 1979-81.)
