Rained Out

Lisa and I got the idea to go see the Reno Aces (our local AAA Minor League Baseball club) game on Friday night. They would be playing the Albuquerque Isotopes. (This team, incidentally, is not a descendant of the former Albuquerque Dukes — that team later moved to Portland (the Beavers) before moving again and is now known as the El Paso Chihuahuas.) So we headed into Reno and went to the game. We got front-row seats, albeit down the left field line. As it happens, we never sat in the seats.

Rained Out

About the time we went into the ballpark, it started raining. The tarp was already down on the field. What we originally thought was doing to be a passing shower turned in to a bitterly cold wind-driven rainstorm. We stayed under cover, bought a couple of hot dogs, and hoped for the best, as did a bunch of other people huddling on the concourse of Greater Nevada Field. Alas, the rain pounded on, and after a delay of an hour or so after scheduled first pitch, the game was officially postponed. Because the Isotopes won't be coming back to Reno this year, they'll play a "Twi-Night" double-header, starting at 5 PM, with both games shortened to seven innings. Our tickets can be exchanged for another game (possibly tomorrow's double-header, although we're not sure we're up for that, particularly because it will probably be crowded).

We weren't especially hungry (those sausages were huge!), so we bundled up against the rain, made our way back to the car trying to catch as much shelter as we could (including cutting through some of the casinos), and drove home, with a brief stop for some groceries we can't get in Fernley.

Along the way I saw the score of the SF Giants game in New York. Ouch. 13-1 Mets win. Sort of glad I wasn't listening to that one.

It is a proud, lonely, and cold thing to be a (baseball) fan. (Though it sounds like you weren't all that lonely there,)

No, not lonely, but footsore, because there was no place under cover where you could sit down. Lisa was really hurting by the time they called the game and we left for home.

They were playing loud music during the rain delay. Much too loud. Lisa could barely stand it. I complained about it on Twitter. To my amazement, they turned down the volume and pinged me back on Twitter. That was nice of them.

I love the fact there's a bit of a rivalry between the Aces and the Sacramento Rivercats. Huh, I should check the schedule, see when the 'Cats play the Aces.

Heh, the Aces come to Sacto the week after Mother's Day. Four game series in Reno at the end of July, and another mid-August. A week after that series, the Aces return to Sacto. If money weren't so tight, I'd be tempted to go over the hill for an away game...

Now that the RiverCats are the Giants' affiliate, we would like to get to more of their games against the Aces, but it appears that the schedules don't work well for me. I'm either in the Bay Area working or we're on the road for a convention trip.

Maybe we can get to games against Fresno. [livejournal.com profile] travelswithkuma would like it.

Yeah. I really need to make it to a few more 'Cats home games myself, particularly now that a lot of the giveaways have to do with the Giants. And they're just fun to go to. Maybe next year. :)

Those are some imaginative and appropriate team names.

I observed a game going on from a distance at that stadium on the way to a nearby Mexican restaurant for dinner during Renovation.

It's a very nice little ballpark, and the tickets are reasonably priced, with the cost for two being less than the cost of not-great seats at AT&T Park Emperor Norton Field. Also, one can park in places like the Circus Circus garage and easily walk to the game, and you've got the downtown Reno restaurants for a meal before or after the game; having the casinos mean you never have to worry about whether there will be a restaurant open after the game.

How often do they play evening games in San Francisco, and about when do they normally get out? My evening options for getting home from SF (I'm usually at one of the Civic Center auditoriums for a concert) are severely limited by the infrequent runs of CalTrain. Getting there from the Civic Center by 10:40 is usually dicey, and even an earlier arrival can leave me with up to an hour's wait.

Most San Francisco Giants weeknight games are at night. There are two post-game Caltrain specials, an express (20 minutes after last pitch or when full) that runs halfway down the peninsula and then all stops thereafter, and a local 20 minutes after that making all stops to San Jose. So getting home from a ball game by Caltrain is not a problem, and is my preferred way to go to the game unless I happen to be over in the East Bay that afternoon in which case I'll take BART and walk down the Embarcadero.

Oh, post-game specials. Well, they should run post-symphony and post-opera specials too. I don't mind baseball getting consideration, what I mind is it getting consideration that those of us who aren't baseball fans don't get.

Yeah, but you don't have 40,000 people attending the symphony and the opera, either.

Not an argument I expected to hear from a man who champions something that calls itself the World Science Fiction Convention but is so much smaller than DragonCon, let alone ComicCon.

No criticism of the other events intended. It's a matter of practical need. The larger events need more transportation support. Caltrain sometimes runs special trains for other big events in San Francisco, too. If the opera was drawing 40K people, I'd say they should run specials for it as well because the trains would be full. (As are the post-ballgame specials. I hate leaving ball games early, but there are times if you don't that you will have to stand all the way down the peninsula, which I did not enjoy at all.)

As far the Worldcon/ComicCon/DragonCon comparison goes: I wouldn't put a Worldcon in the entire San Diego Convention Center, either, only one hall of it. You have to match the event to the facility. That's why I thought ConJosé and the McEnery Convention Center went well together.

What it has in common with the Worldcon is: It's important. It deserves consideration. People without options to go home are people without options to go home. If the city supports its arts organizations as much as its baseball team - and it claims to - it'll do something about this.

For what it is worth - before redoing the trolley lines so that the line that serves PetCo Park continues to Qualcomm Stadium and beyond, the San Diego MTS would run special "Red Line" trains along that route for: Padre Games, Charger Games, and Comic-Con International.

Had we held Worldcon at the San Diego Convention Center during that era, I would not have expected them to put on Red Line trains for us. Nor would I expect it if any of the theaters were along that route.

We often go to Kansas City over Memorial Day weekend, and it seems like the Royals are away more than half the time. So we discovered the minor league K.C. T-Bones, where tickets are much more reasonable and you can get great seats. Plus, their kettle corn is freshly made and quite tasty. Here in Omaha we have the Storm Chasers, the AAA club for the Royals.

BASFA has engaged the one and only luxury box at the A level San Jose Giants for May 14's Star Wars Night (come in costume and get a free ticket to a future game). Alas, my work schedule doesn't mesh with this and I will not be able to attend.

More good team names. Why is the San Jose team called the Giants? How unoriginal.

From: [identity profile] kevin-standlee.livejournal.com
San Jose's team name is apparently dictated by its parent team in a way that the Giants' other minor league affiliates (Sacramento RiverCats, Kaizer-Salem Volcanoes, and the Richmond Flying Squirrels) are not.

That club in SJ has been there for years and years. I remember it being the A club for the Giants when I first started going to the major league games (1988, with my grandfather, who is the reason why I'm a Giants fan). I think it might be possible that the club is owned by the Giants as opposed to other owners.

I'm really rather displeased that the Dodgers made their AAA team in OKC take the name of the parent club, although it leads to a great giveaway at an upcoming Cats game -- Beat LA rally flags...

"Beat LA Flag Giveaway
The first 3,000 fans through the gates at Raley Field will take home a Beat LA rally flag! Who cares if it's the OKC Dodgers - they're still wearing the wrong shade of blue."

That said, I liked the old name of the OKC team -- the Redhawks.

Storm Chasers here used to be called the Omaha Royals, until they changed playing venues and someone decided to rebrand them. They held a contest for a new name, although my cynical self thinks that was just a promotion and they already had the name picked out.

Hey - it's better (in at least some ways) to how the Isotopes got their name. I'll just point out that there was a big coincidence that resulted in the Simpson's Episode "Hungry, Hungry, Homer" airing just after The Dukes moved to (announced their move to?) Portland.

I like Storm Chasers. It's unique. The PCL has some great names in the league.
