When the Astro wouldn't start (again) yesterday, Lisa looked more closely at the battery connections. To her annoyance, she found that the negative battery connection was stripped, which was why she couldn't keep it tight enough to keep the juice flowing. While she would rather convert to a top-post battery because it's much easier to access the terminals, the positive cable connection from the battery to the starter is very difficult to replace, so she decided to replace the negative cable (easy) with the same side-post connector. Of course, we also had to replace the battery, which is annoying because the battery itself was fine; it was just the connector that was stripped.
We removed the parts, took them over to O'Reilly, bought a new battery, and Lisa installed the new battery cable and battery. Things seem to be working okay again. There are still several important things that have to be fixed, but they are going to have to wait until I get back from China.
