New Wildlife at Fernley House

Late this afternoon, I stepped out onto the porch and saw a new critter on the sidewalk at Fernley House.



At first, I thought it might be a chipmunk, but then it came out from behind the can where we store kindling and I saw, to my surprise, the first-ever squirrel we've seen in Fernley.



We did not think there were squirrels in Fernley, but obviously we were wrong.

This newest visitor to the Fernley House Wildlife Refuge did not immediately run away the way chipmunks and most birds do. However, when I started to step off the porch, he ran off down the sidewalk and under the front gate. I don't know if we'll see him again or not.

That's a funky-looking squirrel from an Easterner point of view, but I know there are lots more mammal species in the West. Still, it doesn't look like the squirrels I'm seeing in a quick search. Curious!

I'm surprised that he did not come back (that I noticed) other than the one time I mention in a later post. I dumped a bunch of carrots in the yard hoping that the rabbits would come eat them. Do squirrels like carrots, I wonder.

I imagine like most rodenta they tend to like anything they can stuff into their little mouths xD
