I finally have the photos online from yesterday, so here is a backdated entry with some highlights of our travels. There are lots more where these came from, so click through to see more.

Teifi Marshes

After a mapping mis-step, we abandoned our first and second options and instead went to the Welsh Wildlife Centre and Teifi Marshes.

Teifi Marshes

There we took the walk around the marshes, including some of the wildlife-viewing blinds. Out there somewhere in that marshland there was at least one water buffalo, which I saw with the naked eye but cannot find in these photos.

Estuary View

There were serious birders in this blind, way outclassing my 4x camera phone zoom. They spotted an osprey, but I missed the shot.

Bird Blind

There is a heron near the middle of this picture, but again it's not easy to see.

My photos do not do this place justice. I'm very glad I came.

After our walk around the marshes, we visited the cafe for tea and some excellent cake before setting off for the next target.

Castell Henllys

Castell Henllys is an Iron Age hillfort that includes reconstruction of roundhouses and other things turned up in the ongoing excavation of the site.

Castell Henllys

We walked up the hill to the gate of the fort.

Castell Henllys

The building at left is the Chief's House.

Chief's House

The leader of the village would be established here in comfort.

Castell Henllys

Archeology students working on the site act as docents, explaining how the people here lived.

Sheep at Castell Henllys

A flock of Soay Sheep, a heritage breed, would have been kept by the villagers...

Castell Henllys Village Pigs

...as would have been pigs. This one seemed curious about me as I came over to take this picture.

We did not have as much time as we might have liked to visit here, and I think we were probably the last visitors of the day as we left just before 5 PM.

That might have been it, but we came across a sign for something that looked promising and that was something we could visit after 5 PM.

Pentre Ifan

Driving up some small side roads, we made it to the Pentre Ifan site.

The Floating Stone

This is "the largest and best preserved neolithic dolmen in Wales."

The Floating Stone

These are the same sort of bluestones that make up the inner circle of Stonehenge. The huge capstone is supported by three small points. I stood inside, and it's a little scary realizing how many tons of rock are there, but it's been there for five thousand years. It's a deeply impressive site.

The light was fading as we left for the day, but we did get back before dark, just barely. No trains today, and we did fewer things than initially planned, but I'm very happy to have seen the things I did see. Not everything comes out in photos, but the memories will stay with me forever.
