Those of you who attended Denvention 3 may recall that every member was issued with a water bottle and was warned, "You're at altitude, and you need to drink extra water." Well, Reno isn't much lower than Denver — 4500 feet rather than 5280 — and it may well be drier, although I don't have objective data on that. Those of you who live in the lowlands (most of us, including me) should remember to drink extra water and take into account the somewhat thinner air. It's been getting to me yesterday and today, although I admit that much of that could also be from spending a few hours in the casino, where there's cigarette smoke as well. But when I come back here in August, I'm bringing my D3 water bottle.

As long as you're giving us all these useful Reno reports (I've never felt any deficiency from the air in Reno, or even Denver or Santa Fe, but then I've never been to a Worldcon before in any of these places, yea not even Denver), could you remind us of the name of that casino - in Sparks, wasn't it? - whose restaurant serves that shrimp pan fry dish you like so much?

That's John Ascuaga's Nugget. Besides John's Oyster Bar (which serves the shrimp pan roast — avoid the version of it served at the Atlantis' seafood restaurant), I also recommend Restaurante Orozko, the Basque restaurant where Lisa and I have always been treated nicely and served excellent food.

Unfortunately, on this trip, we were unable to eat at either of these, because on Sunday night we didn't get over there until after they closed at 9 PM (open later on Friday-Saturday) and on Monday we ate lunch so late that we didn't feel like eating dinner until nearly midnight. That's a side effect of sleeping in, I reckon.

Smart.

With all the casinos and distractions both Las Vegas and Reno have to offer it's still desert and you have to hydrate. Reno may be a little cooler, but it's high desert. The water bottles are a great idea! Good for any large conference, really.
