I took today off for recovery and slept until around 7:30 AM, which is very much sleeping in for me, not just by my usual work standards, but because during the hospital stay, they typically would show up between 3 and 4 AM to do tests, injections, and sometimes medicines by mouth. Once they would do that, I would not try going back to sleep (it never worked), but would start my day, usually asking for a coffee and a cup of broth if the food prep station had it.

After gingerly starting my day and restarting my oral medications (most of which were on hold during the hospital stay), I got dressed and slowly walked down to the Wigwam where I had breakfast. The folks there, who have been so great to me (and Kayla), had wondered where I'd been, so I filled them in and told them that Kayla isn't likely to be around for a couple of weeks.

After breakfast, I walked home, took a shower, and applied a lawn mower razor to my face to remove a week of beard growth.

Lisa and I went out for errands. We went to the post office, and then to Walgreens, where on instructions from the discharge people, I bought some Motrin (acetaminophen/ibuprofen) for pain relief. From there is was to the optician. They had texted me while I was hospitalized that my glasses were ready. I had texted them back to tell them there would be a delay.

Once I got home, I contacted a local garage about getting the Astro in to the shop to have the problem with it addressed: it turns over but will not start. Lisa has ideas, but does not feel up to working on it; however, she did remove the console so that the shop will be able to get the "doghouse" cover off. The shop that is within walking distance says they can take it on Tuesday, so I will have it towed to them on Monday.

Finally, I made an appointment for 2 PM a week from Friday to go back to the post-surgical center at Renown to have the surgical staples removed from my belly.

I took a number of photos while I was in the hospital. Most of them were of food served to me, or of the hospital room, and a few are of TMI, so go poking around in my Flickr account at your peril. This afternoon, I got some of the labeled, and they may show up in the backdated entries I hope to write about the whole experience. Remember that I do my journaling here for myself, with y'all allowed to watch, and sometimes that means you get TMI. (The very TMI stuff is in private-to-me-only entries.)

My doctor's office ordered a metabolic panel because we're just over halfway through the initial course of Ozempic plus a potassium supplement. Unfortunately, because it's highly impractical for lab results to move between medical systems, that meant I needed to go to the nearest Sutter Health lab, which is in Roseville, 150 miles from Fernley. However, the weather has stayed dry (which is otherwise unfortunate), so this morning I left for Roseville at 6 AM and got to Roseville three hours later, which is pretty good time including two restroom stops. My total time at the lab was only 30 minutes including check-in and my own fiddling with my phone before I checked in. The draw itself took only a few minutes and was routine.

As I had been fasting for more than twelve hours for the blood test, even with the Ozempic suppressing my appetite, I was hungry. I left Roseville and headed up to Emigrant Gap to have breakfast at The Rustic Table. My timing was good, because the place was nearly empty when I arrived, but shortly after I put in my order, others started showing up, including a very large group that had reserved about a third of the restaurant.

My breakfast was just fine. I deliberately ordered something smaller than I typically get, and it was the right amount. Fully satisfied, I continued toward home. Unfortunately, I realized that something was wrong, as the charger wasn't recharging my mobile phone. Stopping at the vista point outside of Reno, I checked and discovered that the fuse controlling the dome and other interior lights had failed. I stopped by O'Reilly Auto Parts and bought an assortment of fuses. To my relief, the replacement held and didn't immediately fail again, which would have been a sign of something more serious. Not so good was discovering that the switch that adjusts the brightness of the instrument panel lights and also turns on the dome light was stuck. Luckily for me, it was not stuck in the "dome light on" position, which would have run down the battery. I expect that we'll be able to get at the switch and (I hope) and get it back the way it should be.

I stopped at WinCo Foods for a small number of things that Lisa asked me to buy, although I did forget one item for which I hope she will forgive me. I had a few other errands as well, which took a while, and I did not get home until 4:30 PM, more than ten hours after I left.

I also think that I've developed a sinus infection. That persistent nasal drainage that the Ozempic induces I think leads to infections having a path into my sinus. I'd use something like Actifed/Sudafed, but it's contra-indicated for high blood pressure.

I have set no alarm for Sunday morning. Luxury!

Hot Stuff

I spent most of Sunday sleeping or working on editing a future RLMS episode, so there wasn't much about which to write.

Today we had some daytime errands in Reno, so we had to venture out into the 38°C heat. Fortunately, the Astro's repaired air conditioning continues to hold up.

Most of the errands were a bust, but we were able to get a new pair of shoes for Lisa from SAS Shoes. This is a replacement for the pair that some of you may recall was the cause of some confusion as we had to rely on friends to collect them from the SAS store in Reno on account of we were already in Tonopah getting ready for Westercon 74. So that pair lasted two years, and that's pretty good. Lisa needs to get this new pair broken in for Westercon 76 in Utah and also more importantly for the Europe trip, which is likely to include a lot of walking.

Busy Week

We have a lot of things happening this week. Medical appointments, dentist appointments, another vaccination (we try to not do multiple shots at once), and so forth. Combined with the effort it took to do the house cleaning this weekend (it does look a whole lot better), both Lisa and I are already worn out and it's only Tuesday. I'm feeling very sore from having wrestled that Rug Doctor unit around (twice) and I'm glad that I had a chiropractic appointment yesterday. Much of this needs to be done before we head off to Westercon at the end of the month. And then when we get back from Utah, we shift into getting-ready-for-the-Worldcon trip mode, which is going to be huge -- even bigger than last year's NASFiC Canadian road trip and expedition to Hudson Bay by train.

Errand Day

I had to be up at 3:30 AM on Thursday for Day Jobbe reasons to help someone in our European office, but that did mean that I was able to clock out at 12:30 PM and get on the road just after 1 PM. Lisa and I had a number of things to get done in Reno that had to be done during normal working hours, rather than overnight as we do our large-scale grocery shopping. We combined as many things as possible, taking advantage of the fact that four of the stops were within walking distance of each other (two on each side of the street).

Trying to be efficient )

We got home about five hours after we left, having been generally successful with most of our errands. But wow, I was worn out after the early start today. Not helping was that it was windy, and the Rolling Stone, which doesn't handle that well at the best of times, is worse when the winds come gusting through the Truckee River canyon. So I'm still a bit worn out today. Nothing some extra sleep won't fix, I reckon.

Hot

We're starting to get some hot weather here, and without any usable vehicle other than the Rolling Stone (which, like the still-shopped Astro) has no working air conditioning, means no good options for errands. I did walk to the post office (where there was a Westercon-related package waiting) today, and then because we need some CLR solution to clean the accumulated minerals from the swamp cooler before we can use it, on to Big R. I guess it could have been worse. There was some breeze, and of course the humidity is negligible. But I still felt pretty wrung out once I got home.

Rack 'Em

Lisa informed me this week that she's managed to clear enough wall space to accommodate more shelves, and asked me to buy two more BILLY bookshelves. So after breakfast and checking out of the hotel this morning, I went up to East Palo Alto and did so. This was indeed my second trip there in a week, but that's because we didn't know we'd have room for the shelves when I went there to return the desk extension I can't use.

I arranged me errands to travel clockwise, on account of eastward is the free direction on the Dumbarton Bridge, and my next stop was Fremont, where I got a long-overdue haircut from my "regular" barber in Fremont, bought coffee from Suju's (across the street from where I used to live), and then went for a walk in Quarry Lakes Park, taking a picnic lunch with me and listening to the Giants get thrashed by the Mariners in spring training baseball while taking in the great weather (boo, we need more rain, the lakes are empty) at Quarry Lakes Park.

I've made it to the Crowne Plaza for tonight. To my disappointment, they've bricked up their hot tub. After 13K steps today, I wanted to soak in the hot tub. Oh, well.

In between other tasks dealing with my mother's hospitalization, I ran up to Oroville and the Butte County Clerk's office. I was born in Butte County, and I wanted some certified copies of my birth certificate. They cost $16 each, and there's no discount for multiple simultaneous orders. I used my passport to prove I was who I said I was, having used a previous certified copy to get the passport in the first place.

It was, fortunately, a slow day at that office, and I didn't have to wait at all. It's an hour drive each way, but it took only about five minutes to get the certificates. The new versions of the certified copies are much fancier than the old ones, all on bond paper with better looking seals. The data is the same, of course.

I got back to Fremont about an hour or so ago after a long day. I hope to get to bed soon, because I have a lot of Day Jobbe ahead of me tomorrow. And I also need to try to get the van's driver side door handle repaired.
