As some may recall, a few days ago we spotted a small herd of horses that had wandered into "downtown" Fernley near where we live. They appear to have taken to the area, as Lisa recorded them browsing around the railroad yard across from our house.
Last night, I went out onto the porch to watch a passing train, and was startled by what, in the reflected porch light, appeared to be herd of ghostly demon horses, as the herd had come into the yard next to our house (presumably to graze on the brush in that field) and the orange porch light reflected eerily from their eyes. Once I realized what I was seeing, I said, "Hello, horses," and they decided to go away. I'm working on the assumption that they won't try to get into our yard over the chain-link fence, so they're not dangerous.
Also yesterday, but in the late afternoon, was the Fernley Christmas Parade. The parades here form up in front of our house as it's convenient to Main Street.
( Parade Prep )The parade itself starts at twilight because lots of the floats are covered with lights.
Later in the evening, Lisa and I went out and watched as one of the people towing one of the large horse trailers decided that going around the block was too much work and came pretty close to clipping the bollards protecting the electric pole and fire hydrant visible in the picture above. They made it, but it was a close shave. The wild horses that I described earlier came back later after all of the fuss died down.
Today is our last full day home and last night home before our extended holiday trip begins tomorrow. Packing continues apace, as we try to divide stuff between what can be checked on the train and what we would rather take onboard with us, either because we'll need it onboard or because we'd rather not put it into checked luggage.
