As bad luck would have it, I had two simultaneous meetings on Saturday at 11 AM PDT. As I'm the Secretary of the SFSFC Board of Directors, I had to prioritize that.

Corporate Kevin )

After the SFSFC meeting, I went over to the Montreal in 2027 Worldcon Bid Committee meeting, which was mostly over, but those people who wanted to talk after the actual meeting about various SMOFfish topics hung around for a while since they had their WSFS rules expert there. I find that there are many things about WSFS that people think are required but that are not, when you actually read the rules. Conversely, there are things that are required that some people, including some Worldcon committee management, do not in my opinion think they should have to do, and sometimes they simply won't do them because there's nobody out there who will compel them to do so. No, I'm not going to go into specifics.

I'm glad I went to the Wigwam for a big breakfast on Saturday morning. Between the emergency firewood unloading and two longish meetings, I was a bit tired and hungry when I got done with everything. Furthermore, Lisa wanted to go grocery shopping on Sunday early morning, so I should have gone to bed much earlier than I did. As it was, I only got three hours of sleep before the alarm awakened me just after midnight.

Lisa and I drove to WinCo Foods in Reno, leaving the house at about 1 AM and getting home around 3:45. A fairly routine trip, with (not surprisingly) no traffic to worry about and the only challenge being dodging forklifts, pallet jacks, and aisle full of staff stocking shelves.

There were two 2027 Worldcon bid developments on Saturday at SMOFCon. I filed Montréal's formal bid for the 2027 Worldcon with Seattle 2025 just after midnight (just before I went to bed), after having confirmed with bid chair Terry Fong that everything was ready to do. Seattle responded later that day that the bid was correct and met the WSFS Constitutional requirements, so Montreal is on the ballot.

Meanwhile, the Tel Aviv bid sent an announcement to SMOFCon 41, which Vincent Docherty read during the Worldcon bid Q&A session, stating that they have suspended their 2027 Worldcon bid until an unspecified future date.

The combined announcement is on the Worldcon website, including the link to the list of bids and to the specific documents making up the Montréal bid.

I ended up napping for a couple of hours, and when I woke up I needed to put in some work helping the Montréal 2027 Worldcon bid, which hosted the SMOFCon 41 Con Suite this evening.

Montreal in Seattle )

SMOFCon is always a time to make connections and talk with other people about plans for future events, such as in my case Westercon and Worldcon. I did participate in a number of such conversations this evening. I am not going to talk about them now because the plans need to develop and reach a point where we can deliver on them. However, I will say that in general, and subject to change, if Montréal wins their bid, I expect to be chairing their WSFS Business Meeting, and I have been working on having a team selected to operate it. We haven't won yet, and we aren't the only known bid, so it is premature to say much more. There are, after all, two Worldcons to come before 2027.

I then hung out in the Con Suite until about 11 PM, and as much as I like this part of the convention, I did pull myself away to go back to my room, unwind, take care of some bid business, and get ready for tomorrow, which as usual will be the busiest day of the convention. I'm going to be recording the Worldcon and Bid presentations (for posting to the Worldcon Events YouTube channel) and also the evening "keynote address" by featured speaker Jim Wright of Stonekettle Station. As the SMOFCon 41 website says, "He’s going to speak to us about his experience in analysis and commentary, with a special focus on the Sad Puppies’ attempt to hijack the Hugos, and how he helped turn that into a positive experience for fandom." I do not yet know where his presentation video will be posted, but I'll write about it when it happens.

I expect to have several announcements to post tomorrow, or possibly in the wee hours of Sunday morning, maybe backdated. That's because I will be busy a lot all tomorrow evening, with the Probability & Statistics Seminar (not on the published schedule; it's a private item open to all attendees of the convention, which has given us Cascade 7 for that purpose) happening after the keynote.

Yesterday was an SFSFC Board of Directors meeting, of which I am currently the corporate Secretary. Among the various items of business was the need to elect directors for three year terms commencing January 1, 2025. SFSFC currently has thirteen directors elected for three-year terms in groups of 5/5/4. This year was the group of 4, and my own seat was one of those up for election.

Because one member was absent, we have to a very short meeting sometime between now and the end of this year to elect officers for next year. Although directors serve three-year terms, officers are elected annually for one-year terms, and the elections for officers have to be of the directors who will be in office as of the start of the year when the officers' terms commence. Whenever possible, we do the officer elections at a separate meeting of the directors who will be in office as of the start of the next year to elect officers that we usually hold immediately after the meeting where we elected directors who take office on January 1 of the following year; however, technically, we must give notice of that extra meeting to everyone who would be eligible to attend it, and I forgot to include that bit in the regular meeting notice. Despite this failing on my part (caused by using a copy of the previous meeting's notice and forgetting to put in the part about electing officers), I was re-elected as a director for another three-year term.

I would have worked on the SFSFC minutes after the meeting, but we needed to get the rather substantial amount of Reno-based errands done, and by the time we got home, I was much too tired to do anything except eat dinner and fall into bed. As I've said before, we try to group our tasks for trips to Reno together for efficiency, but while Reno may not be Los Angeles, is still sprawls a bit, an it can take a while to get to everything.

Today, I attended a Montreal in 2027 Worldcon bid committee meeting. I'm responsible for keeping track of all of our WSFS-related responsibilities as a bid (big surprise there, I'm sure), and we dealt with those as well as lots of other things, including our preparations for SMOFCon, which is only a few weeks away.

Edit, November 18: Revised to clarify the distinction between SFSFC director elections and officer elections, which are separate things and operate under different rules.

Not much happening on Tuesday. Worked on the Day Jobbe during the day, then did some stuff for the Montreal Worldcon bid in the evening. Yawn. So little happened that I went to bed while forgetting to make a journal entry and instead put in this back-dated entry to try and keep up my string of posts.
kevin_standlee: Version of the logo of the 2009 Worldcon in Montreal, Anticipation (Montreal Worldcon 2009)
Montréal, Canada has launched a bid to host 2027 Worldcon. You can read the full announcement in the news item on the WSFS website. This is a project of CanSMOF, the non-profit corporation that ran the 2009 Worldcon at the same site. Yes, I'm still a director of CanSMOF, and have been asked to join the bid committee. (Now I need to scrape up the money for my bid committee dues.)

Because it has already come up here on the first day after it was announced: 2028 was not possible. The Palais des Congrès is scheduled for a major renovation during 2028 and is unavailable. The dates were available in 2027, so we agreed to launch a bid.

As I've said elsewhere, should Montréal win, I expect that, if possible, that Lisa and I will go there the same way that we did in 2009, by train, although in this case the trip will start from Reno, then go to Chicago (probably staying overnight), then Schenectady (another overnight because the connection doesn't work), then up to Montréal. The last time we took that trip, we went back Montréal-Schenectady-Los Angeles without overnight stops, and it worked then. Should we be able to make this trip, we'll have to revisit possible travel plans. There is, after all, one east-west transcontinental route Lisa and I have not yet taken.

But first, we have to win a bid. Remember that if you want to help make Montréal a reality, you need to join Seattle Worldcon 2025 as at least a WSFS (formerly called Supporting) member so that you'll be eligible to vote on the site of the 2025 Worldcon. Then you'll have to actually vote in the election, which will probably open for voting in spring 2025 and run through the convention itself.
kevin_standlee: (Wigwam)
This morning, after sleeping in for about four hours (i.e. 7:30 AM), I had enough energy to go get breakfast from the Wigwam Restaurant. Bringing it home, I used the last of the blueberry jam I bought in Montreal on my bagel. There was no point in trying to stretch it out because it goes past its use-by date fairly soon. I found that jam during the World Fantasy Convention trip and bought two more when I was there again for SMOFCon. I have no more trips there booked, although I wouldn't mind having an excuse to go again. (Not just for the jam!)
kevin_standlee: (Kevin Standlee)
Today is my only full day in downtown Montreal post-SMOFCon, as I have to move hotels out to the airport tomorrow. I was not hugely ambitious, but did manage to tick a few boxes.

Dining and Shopping )

After my morning shopping trip, I dropped my purchases back at the hotel and went to the Eaton Centre, where I knew there was a Lush store. I am running low on some of the things like my after-shave ointment, and the promised store in Reno hasn't opened yet. The nearest store to my home is in Roseville, which is on the other side of the mountains. While I can and do purchase Lush products online, knowing that there was an actual store nearby meant I could go have a look for myself. Even better, I found that the prices here in Canada (even including the taxes) are lower (net of exchange rates, of course) than they are back home. The clerk asked why I was in Montreal, and when I explained, she volunteered that she had attended the 2009 Montreal Worldcon and enjoyed it.

I went back to the hotel for a while, did some Day Jobbe stuff (part of the deal with my manager for me taking the days off, and a good thing too because otherwise I would have had no computer at all with me during the trip), then dozed for a while before dinner rolled around.

To the Sea )

It wasn't that late (compared to the last few nights during SMOFCon) when I got back to the hotel, but I had to spend an hour or so finishing up the Day Jobbe stuff. Tomorrow, I can sleep in a little, go get a final Eggspectation breakfast, then pack and store my things with the hotel after checking out, then figure out how to spend part of the day without getting drenched (the forecast being for rain all day) before heading out to the airport hotel tomorrow night.

I realized this evening that I forgot to write something yesterday, partially because yesterday I did less than I meant to do.

Eggspectations )

After walking off some of that breakfast, I went to the place where I should have gone on the first day of the trip, because it would have saved me money in the long run.

Off to the Market )

I had more ambitious plans for yesterday, but in order to make the right time for breakfast, I actually had to get started on the bits of Day Jobbe earlier than I do (in absolute terms) most days when I was at home. Also, I ended up needing to do a few reports, which were not difficult but did use up time. I'm glad my manager says I can take (most of) Thursday and Friday off as well. As a consequence of those distractions, I tried to make an early night of it.

Today was a "culture day." In the morning I went to the McCord Museum, which was offering free admission in recognition of its 100th anniversary. There I saw their exhibit on the Indigenous people of Quebec, which was sobering and moving. On the walk back to the hotel, I tried once again to find a new jacket, as the one I have is wearing out. Most of what's on offer in the shops here is too heavy for what I am looking for. I found one that was the right style and color, but wasn't big enough. I'm a 3XL, which can be challenging.

Returning to the hotel, I finished off the rest of the food from the Atwater and rested for a while. I tried to check in for my flight tomorrow, but there was no way to enter my vaccination information in their forms, so I'll have to do it at the airport showing the printed documentation. I redid my plans so I'll leave a bit earlier to allow time to deal with the paperwork.

In the late afternoon, I set off to see an exhibition of Salvador Dali's illustrations of Dante's Divine Comedy. This was intriguingly presented, and I'm glad I got to see it.

The Restaurant Not Visited )

Near the Dali exhibition at the Old Port of Montreal was Restaurant Porto Mar, which was quiet enough that I felt safe eating here. The schedule with Loscon/Westercon and Worldcon means I will not be able to attend SMOFCon in Lisboa in December, but at least I can have a Portuguese meal. I had one of their set meals, and I was very good.

This afternoon, I did as much packing as I could. A goodly part of my luggage is now full of Winnipeg Worldcon bid material. It's good that I had left sufficient weight in my 23 kg checked-luggage allowance, and that I can carry my CPAP machine as an extra carry-on.

My flight leaves from Montreal at mid-day on Wednesday, but thanks to having to fly first to ORD, then to SEA, and only then back to RNO, I won't get back to Reno until very late. I will stay in a hotel near the airport rather than drive the 50 km home after being up from what amounts to 2 AM in my destination time zone in order to do Day Jobbe work before completing the packing and heading for the airport. I'm in business class on the first and last legs of the trip (a side-effect of using my Alaska frequent flyer miles), so maybe I'll be able to relax a bit and sleep a little on the two shorter legs if not on the long middle one.

I walked 16,000 steps yesterday and 13,000 today. My legs and feet can feel it, but with me eating so much, I'm glad I'm also doing something work it off.
kevin_standlee: Kevin after losing a lot of weight. He peaked at 330, but over the following years got it down to 220 and continues to lose weight. (Montreal)
As I mentioned a few days ago, we mailed three boxes of our own stuff back to ourselves from Montreal, but they hadn't arrived as of Friday. I was resigned to Lisa having to re-mail them to me or possibly bring them down in October if she gets to attend SiliCon. This morning, while Lisa and I were working on the roof, the owner of the hardware store in which Mehama's post office is located came looking for us -- it's that kind of a small town, and Lisa's father's property is right over the back fence from his store; besides, we're good customers. He wanted to let us know that the boxes had arrived.

After we finished the yard work and I went to get a shower, Lisa went and collected the boxes. Well, two of them. One of them hasn't arrived yet, even though we mailed all three of them at the same time. Fortunately, the two that did arrive were the ones that mostly had my stuff in them, and the one that's stuck in transit somewhere is mostly Lisa's stuff. She got her things out of the two boxes and put them in the back of my van.

Tuesday was the only day I had available for tourism in Montreal. And it turned into not even a full day at that.

Fancy Meal for our Last Night )

Alas, our train leaves at 9:30 AM and we are definitely not going to get enough sleep tonight. Lisa and I are tearing up our hotel room trying to repack as much as we can before going to bed.

After the chaos of Thursday, Friday was my relatively quiet day, aside from chairing the WSFS Business Meeting. We got off from the hotel about ten minutes later than I'd hoped, although it did no real harm. The BM is at what is perceived as the "far end" of the Palais, although it's actually much closer to my hotel. We figured out that going around through the Chinatown entrance is faster than what looks like the direct route.

Business Meeting Talk )

After the Preliminary BM ended, I had no more program items for today, which meant I could relax a little bit. Reduced pressure )

After coming back from dinner, I composed the report on the actions of today's BM, and then it was Party Time, as we walked to the Delta through the underground warrens again, helping another fan find his way to the hotel with the help of a friendly passing Klingon. At the Delta, we had to queue for express elevators that took members to the 5th and 28th floors, where the parties were.

We tried to visit as many parties as we could, but it was difficult to really enjoy ourselves, because things were just too crowded. Also, Lisa says that parties that are mostly full of people drinking lots of alcohol also tend to be full of people who are not nice to Kuma Bear, which makes both her and Kuma cross. We did, however, talk with James Bacon, who gave us yet more UK train-driver kit, which is very nice of him. We found the UK party decorations that are actually for us. James said, "When you're ready to leave, just take the train signs with you." Unfortunately, we went back down from the 28th to the 5th floor, forgot to get the signs, and were part-way back to our own hotel before I remembered this.

The wait for elevators to escape from the Party Zone was so long that we went to the stairs. Fortunately, the stairs are a valid departure route and don't lead to an alarmed emergency exit. The parties seemed to be full of lots of people enjoying themselves, but Lisa seemed a little stressed out and happy to be heading 'home' for the night.

We stopped at the convenience store in the Palais just before they closed to pick up some juice and small snacks. The clerk made Lisa very unhappy by locking the exit while we were still in the store. I told Lisa to unlock the door and let herself out while I paid for our stuff. I agree that it's dangerous for the store's main door to not have a push-to-open exit, and for the clerk to bolt the door like that.

Returning to the hotel, Lisa took a bath and I tried to do a little video editing of the Preliminary Business Meeting. Unfortunately, MovieMaker crashed part-way through doing it and as soon as I post this, I'm going to need to reboot the computer.

I hope to get to sleep before 2 AM and to get at least five hours sleep tonight. It's possible that rather than hanging around enjoying the convention this past afternoon, I should have taken a nap instead.

For known reasons, Thursdays are usually my busiest Worldcon day. I registered without incident and dealt with the most pressing things, but many others remain, and I have four panels in a row, one of which is actually canceled but which people were expecting to attend. Lisa and I made a hand-lettered sign and put it on the door of the room where the "phantom" panel was to happen, giving us enough time to run get something to eat at the noodle house across the street from the hotel. A cloudburst drenched us as we dashed across the street back to the hotel with my take-out noodles. I'm eating lunch and dealing with business here during what would be the "phantom" 14:00 panel and hoping that my sign is enough to redirect people to the correct 15:30 panel.

(The same items is listed at 14:00 and 15:30 in different places. The second one is real; the first is correctly removed from the grid, but is in the detailed schedule.)

I've been handing "Worldcon Chairs Photo Op" business cards with the Sunday 11:00 at the Business Meeting info to any Worldcon chair I see. Among those we have seen is Hiroke Inoue, with whom we were happy to spend a few minutes talking along with his wife Tamie. Alas, Inoue-san has to fly back to Japan on Friday because of work commitments. That's so sad, to be only able to spend about 24 hours at Worldcon. But [livejournal.com profile] jaylake would know something about flying halfway 'round the world for a mere 24 hours of Worldcon.

Adam Savage of MythBusters has announced on his Twitter feed: "AT&T is attempting to charge me 11k for a few hours of web surfing in Canada."

$11,000! Wow, I was charged US$0.69/minute roaming charges for calls I made from my Verizon phone while in Montreal, but it would take a whole lot of minutes to add up to $11K.

I don't know the details, but I suggest that anyone with a US wireless data plan that includes the ability to connect in Canada check the roaming charges carefully before you fire up the connection there.

Cheryl now has the pictures and video from our Montreal trip online. If you want to get a feel for the convention center and environs, including the restaurants (yum), check out her reportage.

And do have a look at the photos, so you'll see what I meant about really wanting to use the Auditorium for the Business Meeting if it were just a little bit larger.

Re amended to add: While I'm not displeased by positive comments, I suggest that people post their feedback on the original message at Cheryl's Mewsings. She's the one who did the work, after all. I merely opened doors and held bags like a good production assistant.

After breakfast, we walked down into the Old Montreal part of town, then back up past the Palais and up to the Complex Desjardins up the street from the Holiday Inn Select where the IGA grocery is -- it's part of a shopping mall with, among other things, a large food court. Anyone wanting to buy supplies for his/her party need look no further than here -- this is indeed a full-service grocery store with just about everything you'd want to buy for a typical room party. On the way out, we spoke to a manager, who said that they also do delivery for orders of at least C$50, with a $4.75 delivery charge. After a brief pass through the mall, we swung through Chinatown. If the big grocery up the hill doesn't suit you, there are Asian groceries here. Finally it was back to the hotel, where we had a last chance to check e-mail before check-out time, which is 1 PM. I'll be on the way to the airport after that, while Cheryl will have a couple of more hours before she has to leave. Lucky her! I wish I could have spent at least another full day here, maybe two or three, without any meetings or other commitments, but I simply don't have enough vacation days, and Cheryl has to get back to the UK anyway.

Cheryl took many photos, and in a few days after she gets back to the UK and has a chance to sit still long enough to process them, I expect we'll see photographic evidence of the things about she and I have been riding. For her short take on this morning's tour, see her blog.

Incidentally, before anyone asks: No, I have not been any train rides, including the Montreal Metro. I guess we could have rode around the city on the Metro this morning rather than doing some exploring of the city, but the exploration was more important. Furthermore, I was not going to do a "token" Metro ride -- the two stops from near the Delta to near my hotel -- any more than I would ride BART from Montgomery to Powell stations.

My flight is at 4 PM, so I'm aiming to get a taxi to the airport between 1 and 1:30. Therefore, if we're going to do any exploring today (and get breakfast, and pack), we'd better get a move on.

I posted a version this on the CoverItLive coverage late last night (coverage continues later this morning with the staff weekend's second general session at 10 AM Eastern), but I'll put it here as well

Grocery store accessible to downtown )

I don't mean to suggest that ATMs are rare or difficult to find here. They are just as common as any other large city -- including ATMs inside the Palais des Congres. You won't have difficulty finding an ATM in general. I'm just being cheap by seeking out the bank that doesn't impose additional service charges for using the ATM.

In a few minutes, Cheryl and I will walk a couple of blocks up the street to where many members of the staff and committee are gathering for dim sum before we return to the Delta for the second general session.

In passing, I will note that I have as yet neither been to the train station nor rode the Metro, not due to lack of desire, but due to lack of time. I expect to remedy at least one of these two things before I leave tomorrow afternoon.

Edit, 10:20: Added Google Maps link to the address of the IGA grocery.
kevin_standlee: Kevin after losing a lot of weight. He peaked at 330, but over the following years got it down to 220 and continues to lose weight. (Montreal)
If you are coming to Montreal from a long distance away, it's a good idea to tell your bank that you are doing so. This makes it less likely that they will see you trying to withdraw money from an ATM a long way from home, decide that it is suspicious activity, and lock your card down. I had to spend more than ten minutes on the phone with them -- while Cheryl waited for me to come back so that I could join her, John Mansfield (Anticipation's Fixed Functions division manager), and Ben Levy, (Dealers' Room area head) for dinner -- wading through menus, entering my ATM card number, and answering security questions so that they would turn the card back on. I don't really resent Bank of America for this; the pattern is suspicious. I meant to call them a week ago, but the hold-queue time was something like twenty minutes, and so I gave up, intending to call again, and I never did so again. I did advise my credit card issuer that I'd be on the road in Montreal this weekend and please don't shut off my card.

Edit, 0625: filled in missing name after prodding in comments.

Cheryl is hosting live coverage of our tour of Montreal today. We will not always be at a computer ourselves to add to the coverage, but we can post to it from Twitter, and it will pick up Twitter messages with the #worldcon tag. We plan to take our computers with us to the staff meeting an hour from now, but we don't know whether we'll have internet connectivity from within the meeting room.

Cheryl has shot some video walking around the public areas of the convention center (Palais de Congres), but we can't go into the function rooms because there are four different events using the Palais today. Still, my initial impressions are quite positive regarding the space. The ground floor of the Palais includes restaurants, a convenience store, and other shops as well as a Metro (subway) station. You take the escalator to the next floor, which is where our convention registration will be, and beyond that will be the exhibit hall where the fixed functions (Dealers/Art Show/Exhibits) will be. Up another escalator and you're on the fifth floor (3 is a mezzanine overlooking the Exhibit floor, and we're not using the ritzy rooms on 4) where we apparently have the entire length of the Palais, with program/function rooms of all sizes, including the large ballroom-type space where the Big Events will be.

In a few minutes, we'll head off to the Delta, which is Anticipation's HQ ("party") hotel and where today's meetings are being held. It's a block or so beyond the other end of the Palais, making it a maximum-separation trip for me during the convention, but it still doesn't seem that bad a walk. I remarked that one could go down into the Metro and ride it one stop between the two, but it seems like a silly idea to me unless you're totally allergic to walking.
