kevin_standlee: Kayla Allen, looking very happy (Kayla)
Today I celebrated Halloween and also a milestone in my long, slow weight loss. I recently passed 250 pounds (about 113 kg), the lowest weight I've had since my peak of 330 pounds (150 kg) about twenty years ago when my diabetes was diagnosed. I haven't be doing a specific weight-loss program, and there have been both ups and downs, but returning from Europe, I found that there are things into which I could fit from many years ago, and it was time to take a little bit of a chance with things this year.

Hello, Kayla, It's Been a While )

I really enjoyed myself today. Some of my costumes have been very uncomfortable, and while they looked good, they were so difficult to wear that I couldn't wait to get out of them. But aside from the chance of wardrobe malfunctions and slightly too small shoes (pointed toes look good but are hard on my feet), this was, as I called it, "Office Lady," although Lisa dubbed it "Substitute Teacher," which also works, and it's not uncomfortable, so spending the whole day in it was fine. It was a little chilly outside, but not too bad today.

(The pink outfit to which I linked at the start of this entry had 4 1/2-inch high heels, and the first time I wore it, I wore it all day at my office before going home, having a short break, then going back out to Halloween parties in Chico. It was great fun, and I was a finalist in several contests but didn't win any. I think I made some people uncomfortable. But the outfit itself was painful to wear. I couldn't feel my feet by the time I got home, and I didn't get feeling in my toes until Thanksgiving! That's why when I re-equipped for this excursion, I got flats. I'm tall enough already. I wish I had better photos, but that's the only one I have, digital photos not being ubiquitous back then.)

I'm not sure when Kayla will come out again, but when I look at the smile on Kayla's face, I don't think it will be thirty years before her next visit.

For the past two weekends, the local arts council has been running a haunted house on Friday and Saturday nights. The first night it was running, I was startled by this big booming sound at irregular intervals. Once I realized it was coming from the haunted house, I didn't worry about it, although it was disconcerting to have the windows rattling. Last night was the final night, and I managed to get out and see what was causing the big boom.

Boom Tonight )

It was not quite as impressive as the flame cannons in front of the casino in Melbourne, but still a sight to see. I'm glad they didn't set the building on fire!
kevin_standlee: (Kuma Bear)
Kuma Bear dressed up for Halloween, but neither Lisa nor I did so.

Danger Bear )

At 4 PM, we headed for Reno to run a couple of shopping errands (and to let Kuma Bear show off). About halfway there, we encountered a long slowdown. As the place we needed to be closed at 6 PM, by the time it got to about 5:30 (yes, it was that slow), we decided to bail once we got to the Patrick exit and we went home.

It's a good thing we went home. As we were unloading our coats and bags from the Astro, something happened that has never happened at Fernley House in the entire time we've lived here (we moved here in 2011): we had a trick-or-treater! Seriously, we've never had any kids here. I gave the one kid we had here (I wish I'd remembered to take a picture) a couple of individually wrapped fig cookie bars and told him he was our first trick-or-treater in more than ten years. He said that his father (driving the car that had brought him here) said our house looks like a serial killer's lair, which seemed a bit harsh to me, but if anyone else thinks that, it might explain the lack of traffic.

Although they now observe it on a convenient Monday or Friday, October 31 is Nevada Day, commemorating the state's admission to the Union. I still contend that this means that Nevada is the only state where Halloween is a state holiday.

Celebrating Nevada Day )

Because of the pandemic, we did not go anywhere or do anything special for Halloween, and did not get dressed up in any of our costumes. However, [personal profile] travelswithkuma did wear one of his costumes and took a picture with his Jack-o-Lantern. He has an opinion about people who don't wear their masks.

Speaking of COVID, Lisa and I drove to Reno Airport this morning, where Lisa dropped me off at the terminal and drove over to the cell phone lot so we didn't have to pay for parking while I went it to get my PCR test needed to fly to Canada to attend World Fantasy Con. Fingers crossed that there are no cock-ups in the testing and that I have negative results to share with the authorities in Canada on Wednesday. Lisa picked me up and we ran one more errand that came up for one of Lisa's new projects about which I will write when it's completed.
kevin_standlee: (Pink Dress)
While I would love to be able to show off the costume in the icon, I'm maybe 30-40 kg too heavy to fit into it. I think the last time that I wore it was 1988. Things were different back then, and this is the only photo that I can find of me wearing it, which is annoying. I still have the costume, though, and if I should ever manage to get my weight down low enough to fit into it, I still want to do Match Game SF as its UK version, Blankity Blank hearkening to its incarnation as hosted by the Fabulous Miss Lily Savage. Also, I broke the heel on one of the shoes the last time I wore the outfit. So instead you get what currently fits, which isn't much, given how many Pandemic Pounds I've put on.

Retired WSFS Captain )

Kuma Bear is bored because we can't go out to do anything or to have anyone see how cute he looks in his costumes. He got dressed up and we took photos of him with his jack-o-lantern. All very safely, of course.

One thing not different about this year is that there were no trick-or-treaters. They've never come here. Maybe we're just too scary in ordinary times, let alone this year.
kevin_standlee: (Fernley House)
Nevada's admission day is October 31, and while for the past few years the holiday has been moved to the previous Monday, we still celebrate it (such as it is) on the actual day.

Flying the Flag )

It was a very low-key Halloween for us.

Pumpkin Time )

Because it's a work night for me and Lisa isn't particularly energetic, we did nothing in the way of fun in costumes this year. But Kuma complained, so Lisa dressed him in his Pirate Samurai costume and we went over to Raley's for some groceries and for Kuma to show off. Many people in the store liked Kuma in his costume.

There's a huge haunted house this year just a block or so away downtown, but I've never been much of a fan of haunted houses, and so I'm leaving it to the people for whom it's more their thing, and wish them a fun time.

Lisa and I did go for a walk after dinner, and I saw a shooting star in the eastern sky, and one of the neighborhood bunnies trying to pretend to be a rock or a bush so we wouldn't see them (the rabbit ran off when I played my flashlight over them). That's about all of the excitement we have this year. We're saving up for the Thanksgiving-Loscon-Arizona-SMOFCon trip.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Crew)
Because Halloween is on a work night and because of my work hours, we couldn't do anything that ambitious this year. In fact, it was close to a carbon copy of last year. We did have to run an errand to Lowe's, and while Lisa and I didn't get into costume, Kuma Bear wore his Danger Mouse costume. Nobody recognized him, though.

After running our errand, we decided to go out to dinner in costume.

Small Scale Halloween )

After dinner, we went into the adjacent Nugget casino. I thought I had a coupon good for $10 free play, but it turned out to be not valid on Wednesday or Saturday. Lisa played a little bit anyway, and managed to win a little bit as well. We spent the winnings at Family Dollar on the way home to buy her a bag of Snickers bars.

I'm glad we managed to get out in costume. We had these outfits with us at Worldcon 76, but never found the time to wear them.
kevin_standlee: (Kuma Bear)
As Halloween nears, it was time to carve Kuma Bear's jack-o-lantern.

You can never have enough cute bear photos )

Kuma Bear likes his pumpkins.
kevin_standlee: (Pink Dress)
With Halloween falling on a Tuesday this year, we weren't going to do a whole lot, but after I got off work today, Lisa, [personal profile] travelswithkuma, and I got into our "WSFS Ground Crew" uniforms and went out to dinner.

Getting the Most Out of the Jumpsuits )

After dinner, Lisa played slots for a little while, and won a little over $8. She points out that she needs to win $12 more to get back to even, since she lost $20 last time we were here.

We went over to Walgreen's and Scolari's grocery store and picked up a few things, garnering a couple of appreciative comments about our matching trio of costumes.

There were Halloween events here in Fernley to which we could go (and more in Reno/Sparks), but my hours just don't permit it, so we were back home before sunset. It's not likely that we'll have any trick-or-treaters, as we've had none in the six years we've lived here, but we got some candy anyway, including some sugar free stuff, so that we have stuff we like from anything left over.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Crew)
Late this afternoon, Lisa and I and [livejournal.com profile] travelswithkuma put on our Chicon 7 WSFS flight suits and headed into Reno for Halloween.

Halloween Night at the Atlantis )

After gambling up to our limit, we went and had dinner at the buffet. One woman came up to our table while I was at the buffet and was very interested in our outfits and the story behind them.

I'd misread when the judging for the casino's costume contest was, and that's unfortunate, because I wouldn't have minded $500 in slot play, and given the relative paucity of people in costume, we might have had a chance, but that's okay. We had a good time anyway. We did not stay out late, however. Lisa was tired, and we'd burned all of the money we can afford to budget for gambling. We walked around the casino a few more times (good for burning some of that buffet food) admiring what costumes there were, then made our way back for the drive home. We also stopped at Raley's to get some sodas on the way home, where the checkout clerk was impressed with our costumed threesome.

I'm glad the weather was nice. I'm also glad that I'm not heading back to the Bay Area this weekend, as apparently tomorrow is the first serious winter storm of the season, with potential for snow over Donner Summit and rain here in Fernley, so it will be a good day for staying home.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Crew)
While Lisa was preparing [livejournal.com profile] travelswithkuma's pumpkin, to get in the proper mood, she dialed up HalloweenRadio.net. One piece got stuck in my head, so possibly sharing it will banish it.

Actually, this is the first time I've ever seen or heard a version that includes the extra verse shown in the lyrics about "room for just one more." The version on the internet radio and the one you find in the official music video associated with the movie Back to School doesn't have it.
kevin_standlee: (Kuma Bear)
We couldn't find any suitable small bear-sized pumpkins in the local stores this year, so we got a small, but still bigger than [livejournal.com profile] travelswithkuma pumpkin.

A Bear and his Pumpkin )

We'll see how this turned out later.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Crew)
Thanks to getting away from Day Jobbe by 11 AM (which is one reason I'm at work at 6 AM every day I'm down there and usually work ten-hour days Monday-Thursday), I was able to get home just before 6 PM, even with the rain and wind. There was no snow at the summit although it had been raining. (It's snowing there this morning; I'm glad I made it over when I did.) I stopped several times, all of which for legitimate errands, but I do admit to wanting to show off. OTOH, I just barely fit into those slacks, and really don't fit into them when sitting down. I need to lose weight or buy bigger white slacks the next time I want to wear it.

I asked Lisa if she wanted to put on one of her costumes and have us go out a little bit. She said we could do that and do some things here in Fernley rather than go clear into Reno as a storm was rolling in over us.

Enter Colonel Chinstrap )

People seemed quite taken by the matched threesome. We've worked out that Colonel Chinstrap must be the ancestor (through my mother's side, I guess) of WSFS Colonel Standlee of the Chicon Ground Crew, who is in turn an ancestor of WSFS Captain Standlee. All three hold equivalent ranks, although Captain Standlee is a civilian space cruise ship commander. Maybe he commanded a space navy ship before retiring to the cushier life of sitting at the Captain's Table on long interstellar voyages with rich passengers.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
Yesterday evening, Lisa and I and [livejournal.com profile] travelswithkuma got into costume — me in my referee uniform, Lisa in her cheerleader outfit, and Kuma Bear as Dangermouse — and went into Reno, where various Halloween-weekend events were announced. We spent a couple of hours walking around the downtown casinos (and Lisa won $5 playing blackjack) and costume-spotting (and being spotted) before going over to the Nugget in Sparks where there was a "Halloween Hoe-Down" and prizes on offer, and besides, we were hungry and were going to have dinner at John's Oyster Bar.

Lisa got some nice comments, and there were other questions to which we'd worked out an answer. When one half-witty fellow said to me, "Why a referee? Why not the quarterback?" Lisa simpered at him and said, "How do you think our team won the game?" He didn't have an answer to that. BTW, to save explanation time, we said that Kuma was the Team Mascot.

Unfortunately, the music was Much Too Loud and full of Too Much Bass, so shortly after signing up, we actually fled that area of the casino and, having had our fill of gambling (Lisa was unhappy about having lost all of the money she'd won earlier and then some), we instead went up to the arcade to play pinball. Unfortunately, they're not keeping their pinball machines in good order, which seriously spoiled the fun.

Just before 11 PM, we went back to the area where the costume festivities were happening. We hadn't quite figured out how the costume judging would happen; had we known what they were actually doing, we might have done a better job of working the system. What happened was that the people hosting the event picked out what they considered the best three costumes and then the crowd picked among them for the prize-paying positions (1/2/3). Because we hadn't "worked the judges" because we'd been driven away by the noise music, we hadn't a chance.

I was pleased that the judges ignored the army of Sexy Nurses and picked three decent costumes, one of which (a very expertly-made gargoyle costume that would have been right at home at any SF/F-genre event) had already caught Lisa's eye. From among the crowd in the area where we were standing we picked up on the fact that the other two finalists (a Headless Bride and Old Lady carrying a Baby) were simple store-bought outfits, while the woman wearing the Gargoyle had built hers from scratch). We were among those cheering the Gargoyle, and she won the $500 first prize.

We stuck around for a little longer, chatting with some folks in lovely outfits that would go quite well with the steampunk crowd (and the woman we spoke to said she was going to some steampunk events). They knew enough about SF/F genre events to have heard of Worldcon and CostumeCon, but hadn't heard that Worldcon was right in Reno this year (aww, too bad!). But then things started getting loud again, and it was getting on toward midnight, so we headed on home. It was only after we got home that we remembered that we'd intended to go shopping at Winco (open 24 hours) while we were in Reno. It's not every day that you have an excuse to go showing off costumes in public like that.

I'm glad we stuck around, and am trying not to be disappointed that we didn't attract enough attention to make the final. Our outfits are a lot better-looking than the typically-cheap store-bought costumes, but OTOH both my referee uniform and Lisa's cheerleader uniform are basically just buying the uniforms from the appropriate companies. Only Kuma's Dangermouse costume is completely hand-made. The Gargoyle deserved her win, and good for her!
kevin_standlee: (Kuma Bear)
[livejournal.com profile] travelswithkuma likes Halloween. He has a new costume for this year.
kevin_standlee: (Giants Fanatic)
As I mentioned last night, the only "new" costume I could throw together on short notice was the Giants Fan-atic. Turns out I wasn't the only person at my office thinking that way.

Company )

There were prizes for those of us who dressed up, and I took my bag back to my desk without looking at it. Checking it out later, it seemed to consist mostly of candy, which makes it harder on me. (Not impossible; I just have to be careful how much I eat.) But then I spotted the real prize, which was a $15 gift card from Red Lobster. That's actually useful.

I'm glad I got to do something for Halloween other than hang around airports, which is what I'll be doing this Sunday. Maybe I should wear the orange-and-black stuff to SFO on Sunday morning. If I wear the cap rather than the fright wig, I shouldn't be much more than just an enthusiastic local baseball fan, which appears to be a socially acceptable condition in the mundane world.
kevin_standlee: (Giants Fanatic)
This afternoon, we got notice of a "Surprise Halloween Party" to be held tomorrow at work. No warning other than this. I've had no time to put anything together, and I didn't really want to wear my WSFS uniform three years in a row. I could probably roll out the referee uniform again, but instead I have decided to "cheat" in a way on account of the colors match and it's possibly the only time everything will work right and go as the Giants Fan-atic, starting with the hair-on-fire wig shown in my userpic and including all of my orange and black gear.

As I've said for a long time now, if I should somehow manage to lose a hundred pounds, I anticipate celebrating by wearing this costume again, as that's how long ago it was.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Captain 2)
It's repeating a costume used before, but I have it on hand and it still fits, so I'm in my WSFS uniform and will be heading to the office in a few minutes. Happy Halloween!
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Captain 2)
I am here in my office in my WSFS uniform, and thank goodness at least a few other of my co-workers took the "costumes encouraged" memo seriously. Mind you, this is not the first time I've worn the WSFS uniform to work. It's comfortable -- it had to be, given that I was wearing it for most of the 2005 Worldcon -- and fits, which is not something I can say about most of my other costumes.

Now, I could live without the comfortable if the costume fit. Here's a story some of you have heard before )

I'd post pictures of me today, but my company's Net-nanny has of late decided that while LiveJournal itself is okay, photos hosted on LJ are not, and I can't access my galleries from behind the company firewall.
kevin_standlee: Kevin after losing a lot of weight. He peaked at 330, but over the following years got it down to 220 and continues to lose weight. (Default)
One advantage to a costume such as my WSFS uniform is that it is sturdy and wearable; it's pretty much as comfortable as my day-to-day work wear, aside from the hat, which is a bit warm. So I can wear it all day without discomfort, as I am doing today as I wore it to work. A few of my co-workers are in the spirit as well, including one of the administrative assistants upstairs who has a wonderfully cute cat outfit and who wanted her picture taken with me when I stopped by to show off.

I even got out for my customary post-lunch stroll to the shopping center up the road and back. (I made an excuse to go into the store -- I was looking for a brand of crackers I can't find at stores near my home, and indeed did find them there.) I have worn costumes with shoes that are so hard on the feet that I could barely get back and forth from my car to my desk, let alone go for a 3 km walk.
