This afternoon, I heard a quail calling with the distinctive "chi-ca-go" call that they used to call in their flock or attract a mate. I peeked through the front door and saw him perched on the rail of the fence.

Photos Before he Noticed Me )

Right after I took the second photo, the quail realized I was there and left.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Lisa decided to go on to Oslo while Chris spends a couple of days in Gothenburg. Further complicating things was that the hotel in Gothenburg needed additional documentation of me authorizing the charge to my credit card, even though I'm the one who made the reservation and provided the credit card information in the first place. I filled out, signed, and returned the form to them, and shortly thereafter they called me and said that took care of what was necessary. Because it's going to be the same chain in Bergen, I sent them a similar form and they said that covered everything.

Turning my attention to the hotel in Oslo, I was fortunate to find that I could change the reservation there so that Lisa could check in today for three nights, as opposed to the original reservation, which was for a single night checking in two days from now. Making things even more complicated was that there did not seem to be any way to telephone the hotel — at least when I called what was supposed to be their number, it just rang forever. Also, the hotel doesn't have telephones in the rooms, so there is no way to contact her by telephone. I assume that more and more places assume that anyone without a mobile phone isn't worth considering. Anyway, I got it fixed for now. Lisa needs more time to rest on trips like these, so a series of one-night stops are very hard on her. Making everything work has been very tricky for me, but for the most part I've been able to make it happen.

This morning, I heard a distinctive bird call from outside of a quail announcing his presence. I tried to ease the front door open without disturbing him, but he spotted it and hopped off the fence from where he had been calling.

Spot the Quail )

Besides these two quail, a few days ago I saw a whole family of quail taking advantage of spilled birdseed, but they cleared out before I could get a picture of them.

Meanwhile, yesterday's travel for Lisa and Chris from Munich to Copenhagen via Hamburg hit a speed bump. The NightJet sleeper from Munich to Hamburg is a two-part fare: the Eurail pass covers the rail transportation, but there is a separate sleeper reservation. When they got to the train station, Chris couldn't find his Eurail pass. He told Lisa to go on without him while he took a taxi to where he'd been staying to try and track it down. By the time he found the Eurail Pass and got back to Munich HBF, not only had the NightJet left, but so had the late-night ICE train that also went to Hamburg. He had to spend another night in Munich, while Lisa continued to Hamburg, then transferred to a train to Copenhagen. Around the time that Lisa arrived in Copenhagen and checked in to the hotel (conveniently located right across from the train station), Chris was on the train from Munich. He did catch up to Lisa and they're now both traveling together again and will move on to the next stop tomorrow.

When someone bought and cleared the West Lot, they appear to have destroyed much of the habitat that was attracting rabbits and quail. I was happy to see several quail on our property today. I have no photos because the first I saw of them was when I went out onto the porch and at least three quail scattered in all directions. I hope they'll be back.

And I haven't yet set out smashed-up crackers.

Yesterday morning while I was washing dishes, I spotted a quail perched on the fence near the bird feeder. I wondered if he thought he was small enough to get at the bird feeder, which he was not. Eventually, I figured out why he was there.

Standing Watch )

So I reckon that the quail on the fence was keeping a lookout from a convenient high perch while his mate scratched up food.

I slept a solid twelve hours last night. If I only I could book hours of sleep in advance; I'll need those hours next weekend at Costume-Con 39.

Today while I was eating breakfast, I heard a familiar bird call. I carefully and slowly opened the front door to make a recording of a larger bird having returned from wherever he and his brethren go for the winter.

I hope we'll see more quail this year, but to make it more likely, I'll need to put birdseed out on the ground as well as in the feeder, as quail are much too large to perch on the feeder. Of course, the smaller birds could be the quail's friend by being the messy eater than they are, knocking food out of the feeder and to the ground.

26 Years

On October 13, 1996, Lisa and I boarded Oregon's Portland Vintage Trolley #513 with guests (some of whom read this journal) and while traveling over the Portland light rail system were married by a justice of the peace we had hired for the occasion. He said he'd done a ceremony in a hot-air balloon before, but never on board a train or tram. After the ceremony, the driver let him off so he could go see his grandson's soccer game, while the rest of us did a complete trip of the entire (at that time) light rail system.

Yesterday, Lisa and I commemorated our twenty-sixth wedding anniversary in the same way that we did last year, and for similar reasons, as we went to Fort Churchill State Park and had a picnic.

Picnic Lunch and a Walk in the Park )

After lunch, we packed up our picnic supplies and went for a walk.

The River's Back )

After watching fish and stirring up a bunch of quail, we walked up toward the old fort.

To the Ruins and Back )

The Day Use pass is literally "day" use, as it expires at sunset. On our way driving out of the park, we stopped for Lisa to clean the front window, and a couple of RVs passed us going down to the overnight camping area. There's a different fee schedule for them.

We had a nice afternoon and enjoyed ourselves. It wasn't that elaborate, but Lisa was not up for an elaborate trip and that was fine with me.
kevin_standlee: One of the rabbits that live in the fields around Fernley House (Field Rabbit)
We've been concerned that the clearance of the lot west of Fernley House would have driven away the rabbits. Also, because we were away for ten days, the quail that have been in the neighborhood dropped us from their rounds. We started putting out birdseed again, and both rabbits and quail returned.

Bunnies and Birds )

It has been so hot that hardly anything has been stirring during the day. It's only after sundown that anything appears, and I can't say that I blame the animals for taking cover.

Lisa decided that the partial coat of sanding sealer on the rear deck would be sufficient, and that putting off further painting might result in long delays.

Laying Down a Coat )

After cleaning the brush and putting away the other tools, Lisa (joined by Kuma Bear and me) sat out on the front porch for a little while to watch the show as the quail arrived.

Another Quailstorm )

There probably won't be many more evenings where we can enjoy sitting on the porch, so we're trying to make the most of what time we have.

Quailstorm

There are several flocks (I think they are family groups) of quail that visit the field next to us. Normally they seem to chase off other flocks, but a couple of evenings ago, while Lisa and I were sitting on the front porch enjoying pleasant weather, they seem to have put aside their differences in order to take advantage of the seed we had set out for them.

Quail Scrum at the Brush Pile )

Later, a couple of helicopters, presumably out of NAS Fallon (we get a lot of them here) flew by while a train passed on the main line.

Not Totally Black Helicopters )

In the spring and autumn (and autumn seems to start around the first of September for this purpose), we can enjoy our porch, as it's neither too hot nor too cold.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
For some time now, there have been at least two families of quail coming through the vacant lot to the east of Fernley House. However, they have been sufficiently jumpy that I've never been able to get good photos of them. I first saw them as the parents were guiding the little quail chicks around the field. They're now approaching maturity, and I finally had me, a camera with sufficient zoom, and the quail sufficiently far away to not worry (much) about me as long as I moved slowly and did not make noise. As usual, there are more photos than the ones below the cut, and you're welcome to click through and look at all of them.

Quail Photos )

For your entertainment, here is two minutes of two groups of quail chicks scratching around in the field.

kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
They scooted off before I could get a picture, but I see that one of the quail pairs have hatched a bunch of little ones. I'll post pictures when I manage to catch them with my camera.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
Lisa cooked up some quail for us for Dinner (and Lunch).

No, not those quail.

These Quail )

The quail who come by our yard eating the birdseed and stale bread I leave out for them haven't been here the past few days. Maybe they saw what we were bringing home in our groceries. They need not worry, though. I don't have a hunting license; I don't know when quail-hunting season is; and discharging firearms within the city limits of Fernley is illegal anyway. Unlike the so-called "Second Amendment absolutists," I don't consider any of these things infringement of my constitutional rights.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
This morning, when refilling the bird feeder, I also put a scoop of birdseed on the ground. This pleased the quail.

Fat Birds )

It only takes one of them to get startled for the rest of them to start running for it, and you'll see in the video that something spooked them.

The smoke may be clearing, and that means I might be able to sit outside in the evening watching the birds, bunnies, chipmunks, and lizards without getting into a smoke-induced coughing fit.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
We continue to get quail coming to the bird feeder.

Plant birdseed, get birds )

Yesterday, a small group of them got stuck inside the fence as the babies aren't old enough to fly and they panicked and ran the wrong way when I came out onto the front porch. The parents flew over the fence and looked very agitated as I went down and shooed the little ones back toward the front gate where they could run to their parents.

Standing Guard as the Sun Rises )

I like having all of these birds around, but it's not always easy to get pictures of them, as they tend to scatter as soon as they notice me.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
With the wet, cold weather we've been having, I set out extra birdseed in the hanging feeder and in the increasingly-distressed jack-o-lantern below it.

Feeding Frenzy )

As long as we move relatively slowly, we can watch the critters from our front window, or even from inside the Astro parked out front. While they'll scatter when we come near, we apparently disappear when inside the minivan and they come back once the doors close.

No chipmunks today, and that made more room for the small birds and the quail in the area.

Plenty of Birds to Go Around )

Lisa says I need to dig out my Sony DSC-2 "real" camera, which has a whole lot more zoom in it than my camera phone, so I can get better pictures.
