This afternoon, I heard a quail calling with the distinctive "chi-ca-go" call that they used to call in their flock or attract a mate. I peeked through the front door and saw him perched on the rail of the fence.

Photos Before he Noticed Me )

Right after I took the second photo, the quail realized I was there and left.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Lisa decided to go on to Oslo while Chris spends a couple of days in Gothenburg. Further complicating things was that the hotel in Gothenburg needed additional documentation of me authorizing the charge to my credit card, even though I'm the one who made the reservation and provided the credit card information in the first place. I filled out, signed, and returned the form to them, and shortly thereafter they called me and said that took care of what was necessary. Because it's going to be the same chain in Bergen, I sent them a similar form and they said that covered everything.

Turning my attention to the hotel in Oslo, I was fortunate to find that I could change the reservation there so that Lisa could check in today for three nights, as opposed to the original reservation, which was for a single night checking in two days from now. Making things even more complicated was that there did not seem to be any way to telephone the hotel — at least when I called what was supposed to be their number, it just rang forever. Also, the hotel doesn't have telephones in the rooms, so there is no way to contact her by telephone. I assume that more and more places assume that anyone without a mobile phone isn't worth considering. Anyway, I got it fixed for now. Lisa needs more time to rest on trips like these, so a series of one-night stops are very hard on her. Making everything work has been very tricky for me, but for the most part I've been able to make it happen.

This morning, I heard a distinctive bird call from outside of a quail announcing his presence. I tried to ease the front door open without disturbing him, but he spotted it and hopped off the fence from where he had been calling.

Spot the Quail )

Besides these two quail, a few days ago I saw a whole family of quail taking advantage of spilled birdseed, but they cleared out before I could get a picture of them.

Meanwhile, yesterday's travel for Lisa and Chris from Munich to Copenhagen via Hamburg hit a speed bump. The NightJet sleeper from Munich to Hamburg is a two-part fare: the Eurail pass covers the rail transportation, but there is a separate sleeper reservation. When they got to the train station, Chris couldn't find his Eurail pass. He told Lisa to go on without him while he took a taxi to where he'd been staying to try and track it down. By the time he found the Eurail Pass and got back to Munich HBF, not only had the NightJet left, but so had the late-night ICE train that also went to Hamburg. He had to spend another night in Munich, while Lisa continued to Hamburg, then transferred to a train to Copenhagen. Around the time that Lisa arrived in Copenhagen and checked in to the hotel (conveniently located right across from the train station), Chris was on the train from Munich. He did catch up to Lisa and they're now both traveling together again and will move on to the next stop tomorrow.

We held off moving the small wood box off the porch on account of how cold it was at the start of the month, but moved it yesterday. As this weekend is the "ceremonial" start of summer (which runs more or less from Memorial Day to Labor Day), we could now use the whole front porch for relaxing and bird watching.

Chairs and Birds )

If we sit still enough, the birds seem to forget that we are here and start coming back to the feeder, with some birds going to the feeder while others putter around the base of the feeder eating the seed that the other birds knock out of it.

kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
Lisa made a big dent in clearing the weeds, brush, and other debris from the fence that separates our two properties yesterday.

Clearing the Way )

The wind died down a bit in the afternoon, allowing Lisa and me to sit on the porch for a while. There we watched the birds come to investigate the areas that we have been digging up while clearing weeds, including a couple of quail.

Visiting Quail )

I may end up carrying the better camera out to the porch when we sit out to watch birds, so I can take pictures without startling them.

No Birds

I think the birds forgot that we are here, just because I ran out of birdseed for a few weeks. I've laid out more birdseed in various places, and have seen almost no birds for the past several days. I hope some of them will come by and rediscover that there's a place for them here.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
Today I bought a bag of birdseed from Big R and refilled the bird feeder. It may take a while for the birds to find it again, though.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
Lisa discovered an unopened box of saltine crackers this week. Unfortunately, the sell-by date was in 2020. Still, we reckon than the birds won't mind if they're that stale. So I will start crumbling them up into small-bird-bite-sized pieces and spreading them in the East Lot.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
It has cooled enough from the peak a few days ago that when the porch is in shade, it's decently comfortable. (We somehow have escaped much of the deadly heat blanketing most of the rest of the world, it appears.) So when possible, even though we have plenty of things to do for the Winnipeg trip, we try to spend some time outside on the porch, where one of the main attractions is watching the birds come to the feeder.

Camera Shy )

I also hear a quail calling out in the East Lot somewhere, but cannot see him. I like the quail and wish we had more of them coming in to feed.

It continues to be good for our mental health to just sit out on the porch, and also for our eyesight as wel look at things more than just arm's length away from us.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
We have some sagebrush on the far side of the East Lot that we call the "bird bushes" because the smaller birds tend to perch there; however, the larger birds usually only use them as places to shelter. Indeed, I've seen some of them run under the bushes to get away from hawks, which are too large to go into the bushes. However, sometimes the quail can be seen perching as well.

Guard Duty )

We're almost out of birdseed. A trip to Big R is in the near future.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
Yesterday morning while I was washing dishes, I spotted a quail perched on the fence near the bird feeder. I wondered if he thought he was small enough to get at the bird feeder, which he was not. Eventually, I figured out why he was there.

Standing Watch )

So I reckon that the quail on the fence was keeping a lookout from a convenient high perch while his mate scratched up food.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
This morning, while turning the kettle on for my morning coffee, I peered outside and realized that it had snowed overnight.

Two Days Apart )

The snow rapidly started melting after sunrise, and never did stick on the paved surfaces. I did sweep the 1-2 cm accumulation from the porch because the porch, having a cold air space under it, doesn't melt so quickly.

So far, the electric heaters in the house are keeping things warm enough, but I do still have a lot of wood, so if it gets any colder, I'll have to restart the fire.

If this was Thursday (when we leave for the Bay Area and Costume-Con 39), I'd be worried, as there are chain controls up over Donner Summit, but the current weather forecast predicts relatively clear weather. I expect to see a whole lot of snow accumulation up top, though.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
I slept a solid twelve hours last night. If I only I could book hours of sleep in advance; I'll need those hours next weekend at Costume-Con 39.

Today while I was eating breakfast, I heard a familiar bird call. I carefully and slowly opened the front door to make a recording of a larger bird having returned from wherever he and his brethren go for the winter.

I hope we'll see more quail this year, but to make it more likely, I'll need to put birdseed out on the ground as well as in the feeder, as quail are much too large to perch on the feeder. Of course, the smaller birds could be the quail's friend by being the messy eater than they are, knocking food out of the feeder and to the ground.

Things have changed quite a bit in a mere six days days.

End of the Snow for the Season? )

I think that we might have finally seen the last snow of the season. The ten-day weather forecast doesn't even have a significant change of rain. We haven't needed the fireplace for the past few days. I even turned the electric heater off for much of yesterday and today, only turning it on overnight. I guess all of the snow and rain put enough water into the ground that as soon as the sun showed up, the plants started going into overtime to take advantage of the short desert spring. That would explain why I've started sneezing, I think.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
I knew the forecast was for some more snow, but I didn't expect even as much as we did have overnight.

But It Doesn't Stick Around )

With the roads cleared once again, I went out to complete the errands I'd planned to do yesterday but postponed: refueling the Astro and going to Grocery Outlet for milk and other perishables.

Plans we had to start cutting up the pile of pallets that accumulated over the winter will need to wait until after the pallets have dried back out from last night's snow. Once the wood is cut down to size I can put it into the large wood box to keep it dry and to supplement the Press-to-Logs.
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
Friday's brief snow started melting later in the morning after the overcast cleared and the sun came, out, but while it lasted, I took a couple more pictures of the snowbird sanctuary we're running in the East Lot.

Fernley Snowbirds )

The snow had all melted by noon. Today felt cold enough for snow, but stayed clear. The forecast suggests we may still get a tiny bit of snow over the next week. Some ski areas in the Sierra Nevada have announced they should be open until Independence Day weekend.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
Yesterday was the first full day of spring in Fernley, and we got some snow, although not a lot of it.

Slushy Snow and Hungry Birds )

There was a break in the snow that I used to run to the post office and the grocery store, but partway through the trip came a much heavier band of snow. Fortunately it wasn't enough to stick on the road, although I did spin the tires once pulling away from a stop sign. No harm done.

New Snow

Feb. 26th, 2023 01:08 pm
kevin_standlee: Fernley House and the East Lot covered with about 10 cm of accumulated snow (Snow Day 2)
We had (by our local standards) a pretty good snowfall over Friday night into Saturday. For a change, the snow got all the way up to the door, even though there is a metal awning over the front door.

Another Snow Day )

After getting rid of the snow, I trudged through the ankle-deep snow to the Wigwam to get breakfast and to let the birds get back to eating theirs.

This appears to have been the worst part of what looks to be around another week of unsettled weather. For example, last night we had light icy rain, which made me glad that I'd iced the walks. The rest of the week doesn't appear to have a whole lot of snow accumulation expected. But driving across the Sierra Nevada is still something I wouldn't want to do.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
Snow is not the novelty here that it is in the Bay Area and Southern California. The current storm is only dropping small amounts on us here, whereas in the Sierra Nevada to the west of us, Interstate 80 was closed for hours, with the maximum closure being from the Nevada state line clear down the Colfax. This storm appears to be moving slowly, and I took pictures at intervals.

Pre-Dawn, Mid-Morning, and Early Afternoon )

Of course, just as I finished clearing the porch and walks and started to bring in more firewood, it started snowing again.

Meanwhile, the birds seemed to appreciate our generosity.

Snow Birds )

The current forecast still shows us getting around 10 cm total out of the storm today and tonight, followed by clearing tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Lisa's foot has healed to the point where she isn't carrying a crutch with her, although she's still moving slowly, favoring the other foot, and not carrying anything heavy or making sudden moves that might put any sideways motion on the ligaments in her left foot.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
This morning, while looking out the kitchen window, I saw that at least a couple of the local birds finally discovered the new bird feeder.

Finally Found the Feeder )

This afternoon after work, I had a number of local errands: collecting several packages that were waiting for me at the post office, buying some milk and other perishables, and refueling the minivan in the wake of our Sacramento trip. It's a good thing I didn't put it off any longer today than I did.

Mini Blizzard )

Yesterday I went to bed early and slept around ten hours. I may do the same thing tonight. It's cold outside and warmer in bed.

Silly Birds

Feb. 5th, 2023 06:57 pm
kevin_standlee: (Wildlife)
In order to encourage the birds to check out the new bird feeder, I laid down some bird seed around the base of it while they were watching me. A few minutes later, they swarmed the base of the new feeder, but did not pay any attention to the much larger amount of seed hanging from the feeder. Today, I noticed a couple of the little birds perching on the fence looking at the hanging feeder, but so far, none of them have seemed willing to try exploring it.
