The Squirrel likes the bird feeder. It hasn't yet managed to get to the feeder itself (it seems to me that climbing a smooth metal pole might be too much for it), but that doesn't mean it hasn't taken advantage of the feeder.

Foraging Around the Base )

Lisa said today that she saw one of the few remaining rabbits also munching on spilled birdseed.

This morning, while looking out the kitchen window, I saw that at least a couple of the local birds finally discovered the new bird feeder.

Finally Found the Feeder )

This afternoon after work, I had a number of local errands: collecting several packages that were waiting for me at the post office, buying some milk and other perishables, and refueling the minivan in the wake of our Sacramento trip. It's a good thing I didn't put it off any longer today than I did.

Mini Blizzard )

Yesterday I went to bed early and slept around ten hours. I may do the same thing tonight. It's cold outside and warmer in bed.

Silly Birds

In order to encourage the birds to check out the new bird feeder, I laid down some bird seed around the base of it while they were watching me. A few minutes later, they swarmed the base of the new feeder, but did not pay any attention to the much larger amount of seed hanging from the feeder. Today, I noticed a couple of the little birds perching on the fence looking at the hanging feeder, but so far, none of them have seemed willing to try exploring it.

As those of you who follow me know, we set out food for the birds in the area. Lisa has been concerned that the pigeons have been bullying the smaller birds away from the seed we set out on the ground, and decided to build a new feeder that the small birds can access but that the large ones cannot easily dominate.

Feeding the Birds )

We expect that it will take a little while before the birds figure out that there is birdseed in the tin, but that now we can leave it to the small birds and let the larger ones shift for themselves. Whether the chipmunk will take a crack at climbing the pole remains to be seen.

One of the remaining local rabbits ventured forth after the snow melted to investigate the pile of birdseed I set out for the birds.

Dinnertime... and Breakfast )

Our rabbit left some food for the birds as well, and I continue to keep feeding them.
kevin_standlee: Chipmunk feeding on birdseed (Chipmunk)
I finally managed to get some photos of the chipmunk that has been coming to feed on the birdseed in the jack-o-lantern. BNSF took their locomotive away to do switching, and so its constant cycling didn't keep frightening the little critter away, while my keeping the Sony camera handy near the front door gave me an opportunity to take photos without scaring it away.

Feeding Time )

There are a few more photos of the chipmunks online if you click through any of these.
