The day after Christmas, I put the ham bone from our Christmas ham into a large pan of water and set it on the wood stove, where I left it simmering for several days, making sure that the water didn't boil away. After a few days of that, all of the meat fell off the bone. Lisa cut up potatoes and carrots, which I put into the pan and left it cook for around another day, along with more of the leftover ham. This afternoon, I took the pan out to Lisa's trailer, where she added additional spices and put it to a full boil for a while on the propane stove.

The Results )

We still have leftover ham, too, which is just fine with both of us.

We had a very quiet Christmas Day.

Bearing Presents )

I did not take a picture of our meal, as it's mostly the same as Thanksgiving: ham, stuffing, mushrooms, corn biscuits, and deviled eggs. (Lisa made the eggs for Thanksgiving dinner but forgot about them so we ate them later.) I very much enjoyed what I did eat, but I find that the Ozempic that I've started taking for my diabetes is acting as an appetite suppressant, so I could only have a little bit of everything. We'll have leftovers for many days, but that is not a problem, as we like all of this.

After dinner, we went out for a walk. We can only walk around the block, because Lisa still isn't sure about her knee that she sprained when I was in Seattle, and I find that I need to stay relatively close to a restroom most of the time these days. But after making multiple laps, we were able to each have a slice of the pumpkin pie Lisa made, including the whipped topping she made from the heavy cream we bought on our last grocery trip.

With all of the food and exercise, we were all pretty tired and went to bed early. Good food and peace and quiet makes for a nice Christmas for me.

Pre-pandemic, something that Lisa and I did semi-regularly was to go to the Chinese restaurant buffet here in Fernley on Christmas Eve. Last night, we thought we'd revive that tradition; however, we discovered that they're now closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas, as are most of the other restaurants in Fernley. We ended up going to dinner at the Ranch House Restaurant in the Silverado Casino.

Continuing that theme, I'd initially intended to have breakfast at the Wigwam this morning, but unlike past years in my memory, they are now closed on Christmas Day. I still wanted some breakfast, so I ended up going over to the Denny's at the truck stop on the far side of town.

Getting going this morning was difficult due to the frost. (I bought a can of de-icing spray at the truck stop, but that didn't do me any good getting away from the house.) I still can't find any of the frost scrapers that I'm sure we have around here.

Returning to the House )

Now I need to clean up the living room in preparation for our holiday feast later today.

The token has the logo of the fire department (the state of Nevada with a fire department symbol) with the city name and 'Since 1952" around the rim. The reverse (not shown) has the seal of the state of Nevada. (Fire)
Because the minivan is parked holding the trailer full of wood, I had to walk to the post office in order to mail a card to my father. This gave me a chance to take pictures of the riddle (and answer) posted on the signs at the North Lyon County Fire Protection District.

Chrismas Riddle Question

Answer behind the cut )

Well, I laughed at it.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
This morning, around 4 AM according to Lisa who was up and about when it happened, a tiny bit of snow fell on Fernley. I slept in this morning, so most of it had already melted by the time I was up and about, but I did get a picture of the small amount that was left.

In the Shade )

This morning was the first time this season that I could use the wood stove to cook eggs for my breakfast. But of course the main meal was this evening. The smell of ham permeated the house for more than two hours, while Lisa worked on the rest of the meal. Finally, I got the table set up and the Martinelli's sparkling apple-grape juice out and she brought in the food.

Holiday Feast )

After dinner, we each had a slice of pumpkin pie. There's more of that left as well. We aren't going to starve, that's for sure.
kevin_standlee: (Rolling Stone)
After dinner tonight, Lisa and I drove over to the part of town where a bunch of homes put up a bunch of Christmas decorations to watch the light show. I like how they don't seem to closely repeat themselves from what I remember last year. One home that I remember having had a very large display is completely dark, but Lisa pointed out that this is because it appears to now be vacant.

We didn't go looking for other displays in part because I don't like wrestling the Rolling Stone through relatively narrow streets, but from past experience, we know that where we went tonight is probably something like 80% of the decorations in town.
kevin_standlee: (WSFS Crew)
For various reasons, we decided to hold our Holiday Feast tonight instead of Christmas Day. Lisa did a lot of cooking last night and today, and this evening, we settled down for our Holiday observances.

Trees, Ham, and Presents )

We were very full after eating, although about an hour later we managed to each eat a small slice of the pumpkin pie that Lisa made. I cleaned up and loaded the dishes into the dishwasher and carved ham off the bone into a large bowl, saving the bone for a possible soup project. It's a good thing that Lisa and I both like ham, because there is a whole lot of it left over and we'll be eating on if for some days to come.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
Because we are are traveling for most of the month of December clear through to New Year's Day, we generally don't have time to do Christmas presents or even cards this year. However, yesterday we made an exception, and I gave Lisa a present that will cover Christmas and also her birthday in January.

It Takes a Village... )

Lisa is very happy with this watch. She doesn't wear a watch very often, but convention travel is one of the times when she does so, and so this is just in time for our extended Worldcon trip.

We happily ate leftover Christmas ham for several days, and I incorporated it into several omelettes, but once we were down to the bones, I put them in a pan with water and heated them on the wood stove for several days, eventually discarding the bones once the meat fell off. Today, I added rice to the broth, and it made a decent meal, including enough for lunch tomorrow.

Most of the holiday food is now eaten, and it's time to go back to a more or less normal schedule, although I'm still taking every alternate Friday off from the Day Jobbe on account of having hit my PTO accumulation cap.

Tiny Tree

This year we remembered to buy our Christmas tree early, so we had a better selection. We once again bought a live miniature spruce tree and will see if we can keep it alive over the summer. Lisa re-potted it right away this year in the hope that it won't get root-bound, and we've mostly kept it outside, bringing it inside only for the last few days.

Tree Time )

The family room is at the opposite end of the house from the living room where the fireplace is, and it doesn't get too warm there. We'll put the tree back outside soon, water it regularly, and see if it will last until next Christmas at least.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
For our Christmas dinner last night, we decided to have something other than a goose or duck.

Ham is Good )

It was an excellent meal, with a lot of leftover ham, and that's not a bad thing. Indeed, this morning, I started working on using the leftovers by making a ham and cheddar cheese omelette.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
This morning Lisa surprised me with an extra gift with which to decorate our living room.

It's Always Train Time Around Here )

I think this goes quite well with our fireplace.
kevin_standlee: (Fernley)
I'm glad that I took the pictures of Tumbleweed Man on Sunday, because by the time we went out last night to go look at local Christmas lights, it was gone, a victim of the high winds we had on Tuesday.

The subdivision in Fernley where they generally go all-out on lights for the holiday did not disappoint. Even more houses than usual had light displays, and as far as I can remember, they were not just last year's lights in the same configuration. That is, people were trying to show some variety. Even most of the houses that didn't make an effort to make Fernley look like Glitter Gulch put up a few lights.

In previous years, we've gone all around town — and Fernley covers a fair bit of area — to look for more lights, but we weren't feeling quite up to it last night.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
The icon picture shows that we do get snow here in Fernley, and indeed one year we got a snowfall around Christmas that led to my favorite photo of the house. But we're still a desert, and when it comes time to decorate for the holiday, you can't expect snow, so you make do with what you have, as our neighbors did this week.

Improvisation FTW )

We still send out a small number of holiday cards, but we're running behind for various reasons. Some Day Jobbery ate my life today, but I got the most urgent card (one bound for my nephew with a gift card I want him to have before Christmas) into the mail today. I hope to get the rest of the cards into the mail tomorrow.

I'm fond of eggnog, particularly the really high-quality version made by Strauss Creamery, but it's so sugary that I shouldn't have very much of it. Thus I stick to the Strauss product, because it's expensive and the only place we can get it is Whole Food Market and even then, it runs out a lot. This limits how much I can have of it. Yesterday I finished off the very last bit of the last bottle. It wasn't enough for a whole glass (even the small ones to which I was limiting myself), so I contented myself with flavoring my morning coffee with the last drops. That's it until next Christmas!
kevin_standlee: (Wigwam)
I won what I call a "free breakfast" from the Wigwam restaurant (enough winnings from gambling in their small casino to pay for a meal) and went there this morning for breakfast.

Big Tipper )

Then it was time to walk home and start digging through the pile of mail that accumulated while we were gone. I had made an earlier quick pass right after we returned home to check for anything urgent, but there was a lot of mail left, nearly all of it worthless. However, I did manage to get a little bit of value of some of it.

Junk Mail Roasting on an.... )

Lisa is roasting a duck with honey glaze again, which suits me just fine. When she went to check on it (one of the few times we use the large oven in the kitchen), I took a picture of it.

Duck Under Preparation )

In a couple of hours we will have our traditional dinner of duck, stuffing, corn, and pumpkin pie.
kevin_standlee: (Fernley)
As we did last Christmas Eve, Lisa and I walked up to the China King Buffet for a Christmas Eve dinner.

All Steamed Up )

After dinner, we went out for another look at Christmas lights around town, in this case specifically seeking out one house that has a light show synchronized to holiday music broadcast on a very-low-power FM frequency. With the radio in the Astro partially disabled (the radio works but the display isn't working), Lisa brought a battery-powered radio to listen to the music as we watched the display. I'm not including pictures or video here because my camera doesn't work well in the dark; however, below is a picture of a different Fernley Christmas decoration that amused us sufficiently that I took a picture of it in the daytime.

Tree won't fit? No problem! )

Belted

As I mentioned yesterday, Lisa made and gave me a leather belt pouch for my mobile phone.

Belted Up )

I've been surprisingly lucky with the current phone. It popped out of the old holster several times in Iceland, and a few weeks ago did it again while I was crossing the street here in Fernley. Every time, it has landed on an edge or back, rather than on its face, and thus only has a few nicks rather than a shattered face-plate.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
This evening, before our traditional duck dinner, Lisa and I opened our Christmas presents.

Tree in Training )

I got Lisa some new tights, and she gave me a new leather holster for my mobile phone. She made the holster herself, and it's very nice and feels more secure (and thus less lightly to let my phone go shooting out the way it did more than once during the Iceland trip) than the one I previously had.
